Bloody tree hating neighbours

What's wrong with people? I live in a rural town where grass is replaced with gravel in almost every garden. There are hardly any trees and new estates are being slapped over every bit of spare land.
I believe that no matter how small your garden you should have a tree and a pond for wildlife. I have a flagpole cherry and a big tree that grows up like a pencil so goes up not out and I've put a nice wildlife pond in. None of these things impact the neighbours sun in any way and the autumn leaves only fall in my garden. No over hanging branches at all due to the trees upright habit.
God the moaning.....when are you going to cut those trees down. Get some fake grass, your pond solar fountain is too noisy ad nauseum. Then I got home to find my bird feeders had been thrown into the pond.
What have people got against nature!!!!
The offending neighbour has wall to wall fake grass, no water features and no other plants. Said he can't stand trees. Always has his stinking barbecue on and his dogs bark 24/7..

Grass and tree/s if you have space for a tree. Pond no.

GP78 · 10/09/2023 09:28

YANBU, we were house hunting last year and saw a beautiful property with a 1/4 acre garden. It was just grass, no trees or plants or anything. The owner told us how when he'd bought the house 30 years before the garden has been full of annoying trees as the house was built on an orchard and it'd taken him years to remove them. He was so proud of what he'd done. I could have cried, I bet it was gorgeous before judging by the neighbourhood, we didn't buy the house!

eurochick · 10/09/2023 09:29

Some of the posts on here are dreadful. We all need to do our bit for the environment. Even plastic wrapped supermarket fruit needs pollinators!

inadarkwood · 10/09/2023 09:29

I despise people who remove trees because they "don't like trees". People: ooh, ooh, it's so hot, ooh, climate change! Then they cut down trees.

Rainbow1901 · 10/09/2023 09:30

Ooh!! I must be the neighbour from hell!! We have a pond with fish, plus bog garden and waterfall!! We also have trees - some in pots - some not!! We feed the birds in winter and they use the waterfall for a splash around all year round!! We feed the birds in winter - so what!?? My house and my garden!!
Several of my neighbours play loud music constantly which I can enjoy if our tastes coincide or moan about if not!! They also have hot tubs - therefore loud voices and screeching of kids (along with the constant noise of bubbles and machinery!) One of which is constantly screaming at Alexa to play 'Let it go' or some other inane Disney song - but mostly you hear the ALEXA!!!!! dozens of times a day. They also have barbecues and pit fires but hey so do we! We don't have a dog but several of the neighbours do - so barking at all times of the day along with their owners yelling at them!!
To each their own - plenty of people have fake grass - but if they want to fry their feet when they walk on it on a hot day - they can do so! I have lovely cool grass to walk on and I can annoy the neighbours when the lawn mower starts whereas they have to hoover their fake grass!! But I don't have to endure the hot rubbery smell that they do when I'm sat in my garden enjoying the sun.
It has actually been amusing reading this thread at what drives people insane - we are all the neighbours from hell!!

megletthesecond · 10/09/2023 09:16

Why are leaves a problem? I manage to do nothing with leaves in my garden, the worms and bugs deal with them.

Exactly. People seem to want to live in a cement tidy town.

Anxioys · 10/09/2023 09:33

Basically we should divide the country into two zones. The garden people and paving plastic grass people. The plastic grass and paving people can all live with each other.

The garden and the tree people can swap plants and tips to enrich their gardens. I don't want to live next to plastic grass or paved gardens either.

ungryHippy · 10/09/2023 09:33

You haven't got a wildlife pond OP, its just a water feature.

Wildlife ponds don't have trickling water, pumps etc. They're oxygenated by native plants.

Enthusedeggplant · 10/09/2023 09:35

Next door have a manicured square of plastic with a few sculptural plants while ours is a riot of bulbs, flowers, weeds and it’s full of insects and little birds. Love it. Am sure we hate each others

ClairDeLaLune · 10/09/2023 09:35

YABU about the pond. You shouldn’t inflict noise on your neighbour. Why does your pond need a pump? There aren’t pumps in nature.

YANBU about the rest of it. I hate fake grass with a passion. It’s so bad for the environment and looks shit.

Fightyouforthatpie · 10/09/2023 09:37

A bit bemused by all the people talking about noise from pumps. Do you ever make a noise outside? Like play music?

Parsley1234 · 10/09/2023 09:39

Thick as mince
I hate wildlife jeez what a statement
my bird feeder is the best best thing and for those who can’t see why I feel sorry for you same for my ponds just joyful

Volterra · 10/09/2023 09:39

I am kind of with you in that too many people have ripped out plants, trees and grass, destroying habitats for insects and wildlife in the process. However a pond isn’t always sensible and some places are too small for a tree but there are easily maintained shrubs that can be used.

Your solar fountain is most likely a pain in the arse though. My neighbour had a pond pump and it was incredibly annoying.

Very sad to read someone saying they don’t want wildlife and calling the bug boxes ridiculous. I went to a talk by a bee keeper recently and it was incredibly depressing to hear some of what he had to say. I hadn’t realised in some places in China they have to have people come in by train to pollinate the fruit trees as there aren’t enough insects to do this.

I totally get that people are time poor but they have become divorced from the reality of why we need wildlife , plants etc and what declining populations of pollinators means in relation to the food we eat.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/09/2023 09:40

I live in a leafy party of London with street trees which this morning appear to be full of very chatty rink necked parakeets. I plant for pollinators and our front garden is full of different bees and butterflies. We have small trees at the back of our garden as does the neighbouring property and there is a small flock of sparrows that are based there. We left some clover in our lawn for the bees and was surprised how many birds it attracted to especially wood pigeons.
I feed the birds in winter and get loads of different species.
Why wouldn’t you do it if you are fortunate enough to have the space. It makes such a difference when you live in a large, hot, busy city to have a bit of nature to enjoy. In places like London a garden is a luxury why turn it into plastic and concrete.

memote · 10/09/2023 09:41

along with the constant noise of bubbles

I've never noticed bubbles made noise?!

memote · 10/09/2023 09:41

you mean hot tub bubbles 😆

Anxioys · 10/09/2023 09:42

I reckon your neighbour is troubled by a dicky prostrate OP and is triggered by your fountain pump. One of the issues about trickling water is that the sound can make you feel the need to go to the toilet.

Myhorseishoarse · 10/09/2023 09:42

Fightyouforthatpie · 10/09/2023 09:37

A bit bemused by all the people talking about noise from pumps. Do you ever make a noise outside? Like play music?

No I dont play loud music..I dont have a noisy pump. I am a considerate neighbour. My neighbour with the pump on 24/7 also likes to have the radio on whenever they are in the garden. Frankly the annoy the hell out of me.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 10/09/2023 09:43

I don't want wildlife in my garden is one of the stupidest things I've ever read on here (that's saying something!)

I have lots of trees in my garden. I rake the leaves up before cutting the grass (infrequently) and aside from that the leaves just rot? How could they cause an issue, they literally rot away!

Myhorseishoarse · 10/09/2023 09:44

I also hear the shouts on "alexa" and now they have a bloody dog

FoodCentre · 10/09/2023 09:46

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/09/2023 09:34

Artificial grass is a terrible idea. I thought we were supposed to be cutting down on plastics. Should be banned.

https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/discover/why-are-artificial-lawns-bad-for-the-environment

Why does this article frame the reasons for getting artificial grass as if anyone gets it for environmental considerations? Lol.

How can plastic be better than nature? Bizarre writing style.

Bloody tree hating neighbours
PetiteNasturtium · 10/09/2023 09:47

I like the sound of running water but I can see why some would hate it. I do usually birds but currently due to bird flu it’s been recommended to not have bird feeders as you are encouraging close contact amongst the bird population.

I have a huge tree at the end of my garden, we cut the overhanging branches that go over one neighbours fence. We have mature hedges that were probably planted about 50 years ago, two fruit trees and a big tree half way up the garden, large shrubs and various other plants plus a rose bed. Either side have a huge lawn each with almost no plants though one side has two large trees at the end of their garden, I think the newish neighbour may cut the trees down at some point unfortunately. they know nothing about gardening and asked me some questions, I reassured them about various things and am advocating how good trees are.

TheSweetestHalleluja · 10/09/2023 09:48

I live in a new build and over the past two years, we've created a wildlife friendly garden with a pond, trees, shrubs and clover lawn. We have so many bees, ladybirds, birds and even a hedgehog now. It makes us so happy!
It surprises me that despite climate change being so obvious, always in the news, the message that we all need to do our bit doesn't seem to be getting through sadly. I understand not everyone can have a pond or tree, but even a planter filled with pollinator friendly plants would make a difference, or window boxes or hanging baskets. It would all add up if everyone did this.

10HailMarys · 10/09/2023 09:51

I believe that no matter how small your garden you should have a tree and a pond for wildlife

You can do what you like in your garden. Other people can do what they like in theirs.

I don’t like fake grass and and I personally hate gardens without plants etc. I feed the birds and I might dig a pond. I love wildlife. However, your rant makes you sound like a judgmental snob and I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more to your dispute with your neighbour than you’re letting on.
