Bloody tree hating neighbours

What's wrong with people? I live in a rural town where grass is replaced with gravel in almost every garden. There are hardly any trees and new estates are being slapped over every bit of spare land.
I believe that no matter how small your garden you should have a tree and a pond for wildlife. I have a flagpole cherry and a big tree that grows up like a pencil so goes up not out and I've put a nice wildlife pond in. None of these things impact the neighbours sun in any way and the autumn leaves only fall in my garden. No over hanging branches at all due to the trees upright habit.
God the moaning.....when are you going to cut those trees down. Get some fake grass, your pond solar fountain is too noisy ad nauseum. Then I got home to find my bird feeders had been thrown into the pond.
What have people got against nature!!!!
The offending neighbour has wall to wall fake grass, no water features and no other plants. Said he can't stand trees. Always has his stinking barbecue on and his dogs bark 24/7..

I love trees but I hate people who plant trees that are inappropriate for the location.
I live in a city with 5m wide gardens. Over the last 15 years a neighbour has planted a walnut tree, an oak and several other trees that will be massive along our boundary. These now stop the sun in our garden and are so big (and they’re not fully mature) they have taken all the goodness out of the soil in our garden and lawn.
A walnut alone needs a huge amount of space! I used to live in a farm and we had a walnut that was in a 1/4 acre space.
The stupid thing is, he will never get fruit from the walnut as the squirrels strip it bare in the spring and bury the immature fruit in all the neighbours’ lawns, which is also annoying.

Fake grass is a massacre pet hate of mine! It looks so tacky and its so bad for the environment. I would also find the gurgling of the water in your pond relaxing, far nicer than listening to my neighbours hot tub jets and loud music constantly!

JennyForeigner · 10/09/2023 09:16

We have a neighbour who hates trees. He moved to a conservation area on the edge of a woodland reserve and set about trying to bully everyone around him into removing their trees because not only does he want a hideous baked AstroTurf sprawl, but everyone around him too

It is the joy and pleasure of my life now to fill our large garden with trees and enjoy their beauty every day. And also to grow some fuck off massive shrubs up our shared boundary.

YANBU, except this bit - "I believe that no matter how small your garden"

My garden really is genuinely too small. There would be no where to sit 😂

I used to live in a two up two down terrace that had a garden, it was the width of the house (so not very wide at all) and 125cm deep (you couldn’t walk past the back door when it was open) and had to house two wheelie bins.

megletthesecond · 10/09/2023 09:16

Why are leaves a problem? I manage to do nothing with leaves in my garden, the worms and bugs deal with them.

Myhorseishoarse · 10/09/2023 09:17

My neighbour has a pond just the others idea of our fence near the house and patio. They have something that looks like a drainpipe which gushes water into it 24/7. It drives me insane...it is incredibly annoying..despite asking if they could put it on a timer they won't...its very loud at night. I often image throwing some wierd chemical into it.......

Anxioys · 10/09/2023 09:17

In years to come I think a proper garden will be a selling point to more people. It is because people have forgotten what gardens can do to improve the outside. They literally cool the environment and improve it.

Plastic grass and paving not so much. These are minuses when buying a house. Unless you are some oddbod who thinks nature is dirty and your "outside space" (revealing) is effectively like your living room.

Next house I buy I will be looking for gardening neighbours. Not paving or plastic grass freaks.

Love this!

YABU to have anything noisy in your garden that affects others. If you were my neighbour it would mysteriously stop working if you refused to be considerate.

I don’t want wildlife in my garden so I would never have a pond/tree/those ridiculous bug houses popping up everywhere.

Bloody hell, what a horrible attitude.

iamwhatiam23 · 10/09/2023 09:18

Erm not massacre but massive 😂

Tbf that's a "backyard" rather than a "garden" .

"I don't want wildlife in my garden" is one of the most depressing sentences I've read on here.

Very depressing! Our gardens are literally their homes.

IClaudine · 10/09/2023 09:19

Why are bug houses ridiculous? Insects are vital and the more people making their gardens insect friendly, the better. The ignorance of some people is 🤯

I think the first one worked!

Marblessolveeverything · 10/09/2023 09:19

I assume most on here may have small children, therefore a pond would be a risk for them.

Bird feeders typically bring rats. We have cats so not the best idea.

Trees, we have shrubs and small trees in containers.

A lot have got rid of the grass as fake grass is no maintenance and playable on quicker than what can become a mud bath. People are time poor I find these days so I understand why they choose easier options.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 10/09/2023 09:20

This is a depressing thread. I don't, obviously, know what size your pond is. I have a small one and don't have a solar pump. I have a couple of "aerostones" (that bubble air through the water) in the pond, powered by a small silent electric pump with two connector hoselines that run out from the shed window to the pond (hose being concealed under the plants). I also have oxygenating plants in the pond (plus a couple of fish and it is also now used by frogs and newts). It is an endless source of interest to me and asset to the wildlife. I also have 2 trees and feed the birds.

Anxioys · 10/09/2023 09:20

It's because dumb people think a garden is like a living room and should be clean. Bugs and trees are dirty.

I mean, stupid doesn't even begin to cover it

IfYouDontAsk · 10/09/2023 09:21

I’m with you on the trees, however I wouldn’t have a pond due to the drowning risk (I have small DC).

TheAOEAztec · 10/09/2023 09:21

I think everyone who conaiders ripping grass and plants out should be made go through a simulator of hot day and see the air temperature difference between standing on tiles/fake grass and natural green lawn.

But everyone needs someone in their life that they can legitimately piss off.. just enjoy it!

YABU to have worms and bugs in your garden. Gardens should be sterile and plastic.

Imagine being pissed off every time a leaf lands in your "outside space".
