Bloody tree hating neighbours

What's wrong with people? I live in a rural town where grass is replaced with gravel in almost every garden. There are hardly any trees and new estates are being slapped over every bit of spare land.
I believe that no matter how small your garden you should have a tree and a pond for wildlife. I have a flagpole cherry and a big tree that grows up like a pencil so goes up not out and I've put a nice wildlife pond in. None of these things impact the neighbours sun in any way and the autumn leaves only fall in my garden. No over hanging branches at all due to the trees upright habit.
God the moaning.....when are you going to cut those trees down. Get some fake grass, your pond solar fountain is too noisy ad nauseum. Then I got home to find my bird feeders had been thrown into the pond.
What have people got against nature!!!!
The offending neighbour has wall to wall fake grass, no water features and no other plants. Said he can't stand trees. Always has his stinking barbecue on and his dogs bark 24/7..

I’d love to be able to afford a proper garden but I’ll have to stick to potted plants on my tiny yard.

Also ponds = frogs= nightmares

Morons? Really?

Yes.

FoodCentre · 10/09/2023 10:54

Morons? Really?

I'd agree with morons, if you're someone who just hates nature and doesn't want insects in your garden. I used to have that mentality, but got over it.

FoodCentre · 10/09/2023 10:55

I never hated nature, but the fake grass type stuff? yes.

I'm not a moron because I have a simple garden with grass and a wooden fence that is easily maintained. and I don't want insects

Oh yes, most definitely morons.

If you don't like nature please, please go and live in the inner city where you won't be troubled by annoying trees with their tiresome leaves or plants and flowers with their accompanying horrible insects.

There's massive concern at the moment about the decline in pollinating insects. We depend on them for our crops.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 10/09/2023 11:05

I did take out a hedge and I've fenced for ease and privacy.

But

I planted 6 trees
Put in a wildflower meadow
Put in lots and lots of bulbs to naturalise
Have lots of bee friendly planting
The fence is open ended at the bottom so wildlife can pass through easily

And I have a river gurgling away at the bottom of the garden. I can't claim to have put it in but it does gurgle away 24/7. Apologies to the water feature haters.

I'm another who doesn't understand fake grass etc. I do understand low maintenance gardens, not everybody wants to garden, or has the time or the health. But it would be nice if people chose options that still have drainage and some simple planting that takes care of itself.

  1. I can't go and live in the inner city, my support network is here
  2. I don't dislike "nature', I need an easily maintained garden
  3. I am disabled. Leaves are a fall risk, as are trees that wreck the pavements
  4. I am scared of insects. I am allergic to wasp stings.
  5. Moron is an ableist slur.

Where I live (London) a neighbour talked to the council and now we can plant round the base of the street trees with plants that attract bees, butterflies and insects. Everyone loves it, the trees are watered, the street looks much prettier, the amount of wildlife has gone up and the council leave it for us to deal with

ChocolateCinderToffee · 10/09/2023 11:13

I have a tiny garden but was talked into having a bush cherry tree. It’s a delight. No pond but I’ve got a hedgehog hole (that the cat also finds useful) and loads of plants that produce berries. I would make plastic grass illegal.

TheAOEAztec · 10/09/2023 11:13

The biggest selling point of trees in few years will be the fact they can CONSIDERABLY lower temperature of streets and areas down. Eventually even "but they are messy" haters will catch onto that

IClaudine · 10/09/2023 11:14

outsurance I think it is totally understandable you need a garden suited to your needs. I understand the tree root issue too. Agree re: use of "moron".

But able bodied people who don't understand how important it is to share outside space with other creatures really are selfish and stupid.

Vitriolinsanity · 10/09/2023 11:15

My neighbours have the wildlife pond with the fountain that sounds like a man with a dicky prostate. They also have a fuck off Fig tree that collapsed into my garden after they refused to let me get a qualified tree surgeon to take it back. Evidently the facts that I'm allergic to the sap and loathe figs is a factor they cannot bend their minds around.

That said, I have a cherry tree and grass and bird feeders and if someone damaged them I'd have a nutty.

IClaudine · 10/09/2023 11:16

I really want a cherry tree. Any recommendations?

Saz12 · 10/09/2023 11:18

I find it amazing that people actively want to discourage "nature".
I dug a pond last summer - its not big, as I had to dig it out myself with spade & shovel.... but am amazed that we now have newts in it. Lots of damsel flies, the odd dragonfly, birds bathe in it.
But...ponds and wee children dont mix: it was also surprisingly expensive to buy pond liner and a few pond plants. So... I love mine but understand why someone else wouldnt.
But a small tree? Some crocus bulbs planted through the back lawn? A raised bed of flowering annuals? Those are easy things that dont add much work and dont need to cost much, but would help.

Absolutely. Heatwave last year. No stress for me.

Neighbours looked like boiled sausages in their tidy paved spaces.

zingally · 10/09/2023 11:24

I'm actively looking at houses at the moment, and any with plastic grass is an instant disqualification for me!
Yes, I know I could just take it up, but the thought of these people actively trying to make a wildlife desert is just really annoying to me!

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 10/09/2023 11:42

I’m reading this whilst sitting in my messy, insect and bird filled garden.

On top of the beds, I’ve also got about 100 plant pots filled with pollinators, 2 trees (including an Ash that will cover mine and my neighbours garden in leaves in a few weeks, for a few weeks, but a leaf blower is fun!) and I feed the birds with three different feeders and have 2 bird baths. I’m about to build a pond too. I want frogs to come and eat the slugs!

Fake grass should be banned and I really judge people who have it (and are unable to replace it if they rent).

Shadowboy · 10/09/2023 11:43

Well luckily we won’t be living in the same streets as I’d be looking for the complete opposite type of street. Whilst I appreciate that trees may not be supportive of your disability and your autism, they do help keep you alive.
I do honestly believe if people could visibly see the 02 trees released they would value them more.

They also keep other animals alive. For that reason I think most folks out there are very protective over trees and I think given another 20-30years when climate change is really kicking off, trees will be incredibly important in tackling many climate related issues.

Shadowboy · 10/09/2023 11:44

I absolutely don’t understand plastic grass at all. It’s not grass. It’s a plastic carpet.
It she’s microscopic plastic. It was made from oil and chemicals and feels like coal to walk over barefoot. It stinks when it’s hot and has had dog wee on it. Has to be chemically cleaned. It looks obviously fake. And does nothing for nature. It’s the most selfish garden choice out there. At least gravel is made from natural materials.

Whammyyammy · 10/09/2023 11:48

I live on the outskirts of a village, next to a big woodland/forest. I have trees in my garden,a large pergola covered in wisteria and the gardens offer so many cool places to sit in.
I also have quite a large pond with fish/plants, recently seen newts and often have the odd fox or dear visit.
We need to look after nature and keep it in our environment.

Haven't rtft but just wanted to say that wildlife ponds shouldn't have a fountain. Frogs prefer still water.

Aside from that I agree with op - everyone should have a tree, frogpond and wildflowers in the garden.

We have a tiny 3mx3m garden and have 4 fruit trees in big pots. The trees are patio/pot varieties so they grow well but don't overpower the space.

Prelapsarianhag · 10/09/2023 12:15

All those who concrete over their gardens will be sorry when the deluge comes.
