I am fucking melting

I'm REALLY struggling in this heat. West Midlands.

I know we've barely had a summer and I know I should be enjoying this week but the amount I sweat is making me completely depressed. My hair is constantly wet, I have sweat running down my face as if it's raining, and I promise that is no exaggeration.

School run I could cry. It's so embarrassing being pouring of sweat, which then makes me sweat more I'm sure. It's nearly 1pm and the thought of the school run and being seen like this again is making tears come into my eyes.

Anyone who suffers from hair/face sweat, is there anything I can do?

Skin completely covered in loose wool clothing helps a lot. A proper UV blocking wide brim hat too.

For indoors, an AC is ideal obviously but if you don't want to spend that much the Meaco 1056 air circulator fan is brilliant and cheap (less than 1p an hour on max settings).

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/09/2023 16:48

@Piggywaspushed it works if you stick to it religiously and open all the windows fully once it is dark and again first thing in the morning.

We've been doing it all week and the kitchen is still only 22 degrees, the main bedroom 20 degrees

This is why houses in hot countries have shutters

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 16:52

I have thermometers. Our house is never 22.

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 16:53

It was 25 at 11 pm.last night!

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 16:56

Also can't sleep with windows open. Busy road nearby, constant boy racers and poor air quality. The difference of temperature at night when we just had a week in Dorset was amazing.

So the question is, has anybody got one of those portable AC units. If you have, would you recommend?
I had one at work which was fine as long as you were stood in front of it but didn't really do much for the rest of the room.
Been thinking of getting one for a couple of years but which one???

We have a signature brand one from Amazon, they are around £260. It's quite noisy and the pipe stick out the bedroom window but it's ok. I think the Meaco ones are best but ours is ok. We only have one for the bedroom as you do have to store them the rest of the year and they are quite big and heavy. You wouldn't want to be moving it up and down the stairs.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/09/2023 16:57

@Piggywaspushed what? Even in the winter? Eek! No wonder you are melting.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/09/2023 16:59

@Chickenkeev yep basically physics - hot air will rush to join the cooler air, making it hotter.

The cover your windows thing is more applicable to high summer when the sun can be very hot and bright at midday.

Oakbeam · 09/09/2023 17:00

I’m in a hot country in a house with shutters shut all day. Now doors and windows open in the evening. It definitely makes a difference, although it’s still over 30 degrees indoors.

Thanks! I was advised by my sister that physics would be beyond my capabilities so i never did it. Alas, here i sit, sweltering in my ignorance 😂

In winter parts of the house drop to 20. Not much below.

It's obviously not winter now...

peonies23 · 09/09/2023 17:15

Even the advice listed on some sites about only opening windows on coolest side of house are nuts. Hot air will still come in and wipe out the efforts of the curtains etc.

I open it all at 7-8.30am cool house down. Then shut it all off.

House is about 22 vs 31 outside

So many have windows open in the road... their houses must be boiling

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 17:21

I have my Windows closed in my room and blinds down. It's 29 degrees in there.

RackJussells · 09/09/2023 17:29

I am EXACTLY the same OP! I have a shower and 5 minutes later I’m SOAKED in sweat again. Everything is stuck to me, my hair is soaked, it’s dripping down my face - I am also embarrassed when picking up my 7yo daughter from school. It doesn’t help I’m 4m PP with my son and I’ve gained 4 stone too :( so I’m massive AND extra sweaty, I’m so embarrassed. You’re not alone, I’m exactly the same with the sweat, I could cry daily from this heat xxx

This was our experience. Our garden and bedrooms are west-facing and get the sun from early afternoon onwards. The bricks get hot. The roof gets hot. Everything gets hot. It doesn't make much difference whether the windows are open or not!

Similar with us but our living room is west. Windows and curtains closed in whole flat and still 29 degrees indoors.

ragin · 09/09/2023 17:33

Yep, hate it too. All my grandparents were Irish, so I'm made for a constant fine mizzle of rain and a cloudy sky.

I also have a tendency to keel over in anything above 25 if I'm out in the sun for longer than half hour.

I think I must have some vampire in me somewhere. 😅

I managed nearly an hour in a cool bath earlier, was lovely.

Firsttimecaller · 09/09/2023 17:39

The cold pad that pets sit on are really good for about 10 mins of relief. (Then get up and shake it and start again in 10mins) from b&m about £1.50-£10 for silly patterns, more expensive elsewhere for more discreet colours.

I can't speak for all Irish people, but there's a strange thing where we crave the sun/heat, and then totally can't cope when we actually get it! I am awful altogether with any sort of proper heat, my dd is the same. It's odd! (Or just my family, and we're just odd).

Babysharkdoodoodood · 09/09/2023 17:43

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/09/2023 00:12

And for those complaining…

would you rather be up in the morning in the freezing cold and dark de-icing your car?! Really?! No?!

Stop complaining then!!

Umm yes. I love the cold and everything it brings with it. Winter is my favourite season.

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2023 17:49

@sarahh96 not aircon, but I've got a Dyson humidifier which I really like - blows out cool damp air, quiet enough that I can sleep with it on.

just worked out there's an edit button now, this is testing it out

DrinkingWineInBed · 09/09/2023 17:50

Where are you @LuckySantangelo35. It seems lots of us would prefer what you told us we wouldn’t. 🤣

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2023 17:57

@SocialistSally I'm only 5'2"
calf length cotton T Shirt dresses currently my favourite thing - M&S mostly I think, not new this year, but super comfy.

TheLostNights · 09/09/2023 18:23

Been vomiting this evening due to the heat. It got to 33C and I now feel extremely unwell. But hey, it's glorious and we should all be basking in such wonderfulness.....

TinaTeaspoons · 09/09/2023 18:32

DH fainted earlier. He is on immunosuppresents and this impacts on how well you can handle the heat. He has struggled massively this week. We all have being in London but worse for him. People say enjoy it, roll with it etc but if you have long term health issues then of course you can't. I don't have any health issues but struggling to cope with it too. It's bloody horrible.
