I'm REALLY struggling in this heat. West Midlands.

I know we've barely had a summer and I know I should be enjoying this week but the amount I sweat is making me completely depressed. My hair is constantly wet, I have sweat running down my face as if it's raining, and I promise that is no exaggeration.

School run I could cry. It's so embarrassing being pouring of sweat, which then makes me sweat more I'm sure. It's nearly 1pm and the thought of the school run and being seen like this again is making tears come into my eyes.

Anyone who suffers from hair/face sweat, is there anything I can do?

I’m currently in Oxford Circus tube and have just been in Liberty, H&M Home and down Carnaby St - wearing loose, long silk skirt ans a vest top and I’m finding it completely manageable. Yes it’s hot but I just move slowly! Hair up and an old fashioned fan.

I’d love this to continue till the end of the month!

LizardLizard · 09/09/2023 15:16

I did some basic decorating / DIY tasks in the bathroom yesterday and when I finished I literally looked like I’d been to the gym, or got caught in the rain.

And for those complaining…

would you rather be up in the morning in the freezing cold and dark de-icing your car?! Really?! No?!

Stop complaining then!!

Yes.

No car to de-ice, but yes.

I would

jugggugg · 09/09/2023 15:23

It’s not hard to understand. Different people like different things. It’s 30°C here today. I’ve just done an 80km bike ride this morning, it was glorious, like riding in France or Spain.

I think the heat in France is less muggy, I defo sweat less over there!

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/09/2023 15:29

I think the muggyness is the time of year as well. We are still getting that autumnal dampness but with heat.

TheLostNights · 08/09/2023 22:07

Again, how can people enjoy this? I guess if they can afford air conditioning it makes it all a lot more comfortable? We cannot so are sweltering. London in a heatwave is absolutely vile. Yet a lot of people have wanted endless weeks of this weather. I honestly cannot wait until Monday when it is cooler. Tomorrow will be horrendous.

Agree. Loathe it. Just went to put some washing out and the soles of my feet felt on fire. Feel battered with it. Roll on next week when the temperature drops considerably. Roll on the autumn and Strictly and candles lit. Lovely

All those saying wear thin silk shirts, vest tops and shorts are probably not overweight like me. And most of the weight gain is beyond my control due to steroids. So I can’t just wear a vest too and short shorts. In fact all clothes make me look and feel like a fat sweaty pig 😟

OhYetAnotherBrickInTheWall · 09/09/2023 15:38

Of course you can @SocialistSally. It’s hot - fuck the opinion of others 💐

Everyone feels sweaty! Stop beating yourself up! I'm in a darkened room, not even moving, and i'm roasting. It's just really warm!

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2023 15:55

Have had less of a problem with excessively sweaty face recently (yesterday aside)
I used to use a product called driclor - I don't think it's particularly sold as facial anti-perspirant, but it worked, & no ill effects.
You put it on at night, and it's effective for a few days.
I used to put it at the top of my forehead and nape of my neck.
Just found it to check the name, may use it again - does anti-perspirant have a use by or best before date?

So the question is, has anybody got one of those portable AC units. If you have, would you recommend?
I had one at work which was fine as long as you were stood in front of it but didn't really do much for the rest of the room.
Been thinking of getting one for a couple of years but which one???

Definitely recommend. I’m in Australia and have 3 of them to help my family cope with the increasingly shitty summer heat. We rent so we can’t install reverse cycle air conditioning (sorry, no idea what the UK term is for that) so portable air con it is. The key is to measure your room so you can calculate the volume of the room and then get a portable air con that is suitable for the room volume. Don’t skimp on the size of its cooling capacity. Can’t help with brands because we probably have different brands here. Close up the room you want to cool, and turn on a fan to help circulate the cool air. Make sure you get a suitable window kit for the exhaust, and if necessary make one out of some plywood, perspex or even thick cardboard if desperate.

Reading this thread is depressing because spring has barely begun in Australia and we have a long hot summer stretching ahead of us. We didn’t even get a proper winter this year.

Hope the heat goes away soon for you all.

ThinWomansBrain · 09/09/2023 15:58

@SocialistSally Long, loose large dresses are the best option.
I often go a couple of sizes up, far more comfortable.

The weekend is wasted as I’m too hot and uncomfortable to do anything. I’m actually feeling quite breathless. Hate it.

Edited

I feel like this - can't face doing much but feel like I should be doing something. I did go for a walk just now but feel like a hot mess.

bluewanda · 09/09/2023 16:22

Literally have beads of sweat running down my neck and dripping off me this afternoon. This is truly hideous.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/09/2023 16:24

Some people don't help themselves though.

I am on the top deck of a bus and the amount of houses I can see with windows wide open and curtains not drawn. It's a 33 degree heatwave not a breezy spring day. Close the goddam windows and curtains you lunatics.

I could never find them. I'm 5 ft 1. Everything was double my height. I was so gutted when topshop closed, they had a great range. Sitting here sweating in black (but well fitting) jeans. It's sweltering though!

Can you explain why you should close the window? It seems counter intuitive like? You'd think you should let some air in?

AgentJohnson · 09/09/2023 16:33

Just recently got back from Thailand and Singapore and ordinarily I’d be grumpy but the strategies I employed there I’m using here. No air con but I do have a mechanical ventilation system and that coupled with fans are helping.

Butterflysunshine01 · 09/09/2023 16:34

Quite cool here , it's 32 degrees but we have windows and curtains shut, front windows are open(shady front of house), ice lollies, wet hair tied back is helping me stay cool for ages, and hopefully will venture out for a walk around 8 when it's lovely and mild. Have to say excited for 21 degrees next week though!

Chickenkeev · 09/09/2023 16:28

Because it is 32 degrees outside but only 20 degrees inside because the blinds and windows have been kept shut since early morning.

If you open the windows it will make the inside temperature the same as that outside.

Ffs! That seems so obvious! Thanks!

UnctuousUnicorns · 09/09/2023 16:38

It's about 22 to 23 degrees now where I live, overcast sky with a moderate breeze blowing through the house. Bliss. Sympathies to everyone sweltering south of the border; I'd be miserable too.

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 16:40

I'd be interested to know whether these window shutters live in modern houses in the hottest part of the country where there is humidity and no draught. It does not work.

My washing doesn't even dry quickly and it's 33 degrees.

We have an ancient one which is very good. The more modern one is crap.

Chipsahoy · 09/09/2023 16:44

Definitely good to live in Scotland after years in the midlands. Currently a lovely breeze and a bit chilly in the shade. 24c in the sun. Downside is the winters are not mild at all! Swings and roundabouts.
