I am fucking melting

I'm REALLY struggling in this heat. West Midlands.

I know we've barely had a summer and I know I should be enjoying this week but the amount I sweat is making me completely depressed. My hair is constantly wet, I have sweat running down my face as if it's raining, and I promise that is no exaggeration.

School run I could cry. It's so embarrassing being pouring of sweat, which then makes me sweat more I'm sure. It's nearly 1pm and the thought of the school run and being seen like this again is making tears come into my eyes.

Anyone who suffers from hair/face sweat, is there anything I can do?

And for those complaining…

would you rather be up in the morning in the freezing cold and dark de-icing your car?! Really?! No?!

Stop complaining then!!

You’re weirdly aggressive on so many subjects on mumsnet. 🤪 Maybe a thread where someone is discussing not enjoying the heat isn’t for you. As you’ve been told many times, you really should try to accept people like different things.

I would rather it be cold, yes. Cars are in garages so no de-icing for us.

But I’d prefer it was about 18/20 degrees tbh, which it’s going to be here next week so I’ll be much happier. 😊

sashh · 09/09/2023 02:36

A cooling towel, you wet them and hang round your neck.

I also have a fan and 2 portable AC units, I'm dreading my next electric bill.

would you rather be up in the morning in the freezing cold and dark de-icing your car?! Really?! No?!

Actually yes I would.

sashh · 09/09/2023 02:39

Oh and early morning open the windows and ideally use a fan pointing out of the window to get rid of the heat, then close and keep curtains / blind closed.

FOJN · 09/09/2023 08:19

I'm amazed to find these are even a thing. There are all sorts of claims made about them but they do perform any better than any other towel when tested.

I've been using a wet pillow case for evaporation cooling for years. I wet one, wring it out and store it in the fridge ready for bed. Remember to take a bowl to bed to drop it into when you're finished with it.

Dinobooklover · 09/09/2023 08:43

Need to try a cooling towel too. I used a damp teatowel last night. My guinea pigs might light a cooling towel too, although they're currently fine - plenty of ice blocks in their run which they've mostly ignored, apart from the teatowel I've wrapped them in being chewed by a certain Miss Lucy Pig.

It's awful today already. Air pollution is going to be high in London, I went to the shop early and could 'taste' it. Add the heat later and air quality will be very poor. I've been up for a few hours because I couldn't sleep.

TheLostNights · 09/09/2023 11:18

Went out just now to do some food shopping and was sweating within seconds. Then developed a banging headache.
Said it before and I will say it again, the heatwaves we get in London and the South east are a special kind of hell. All clothes are just sticking to me so back to bra and pants again with hair tied back. Only thing that slightly helps. Tonight's sleep will be horrendous. I doubt it will fall below 20C. Just horrible.

I was out this evening and the weather is beautiful.
Walking along in light clothes and sandals. Having cool drinks. Everyone was in a good mood.
Gorgeous.

This is why many hot countries have a more active evening, with shops open til late and quiet afternoons. Indoors and siestas. So much more comfortable in the evenings.

It was awful, tropical night with high humidity

Abracadabra12345 · 09/09/2023 12:04

*"And for those complaining…

Well I don't have a car to de-ice but I adore icy cold, dark mornings so the answer is "Yes!!"

Because we really aren't all the same and some of us adore cold weather and short days and feel both energised and rested by them. Whereas this tropical heat and humidity is draining and exhausting

TheLostNights · 09/09/2023 12:29

I don't mind the cold at all. I never complain about it. Much prefer 5C to 33C anyday.

SocialistSally · 09/09/2023 12:57

I love the cold. Right now I’d rather it was grey and raining as at least I could do stuff. We’re stuck in the house because it’s too hot to be outside. I went into the garden for a minute and thought I might burst into flames.

In the rain and cold I could go for a walk. I can always warm up with more layers. Even naked with fans on I’m too hot.

bookworm14 · 09/09/2023 13:06

Yes, I would far rather it was cold than hot. When it’s cold you can wrap up warm and still go out and do stuff. In this weather it’s just not possible to function normally.

MelodiousThunk · 07/09/2023 13:03

Didn't realise it was so hot up there. It's a lovely sunny day here (SE), about 29C which is perfect and really makes up for the crappy summer we've had, except for a couple of lovely weeks in June.

June was lovely, but soon as it hit July the downpour began (wettest July since the mid 1930s)...all to do with the jet stream which very abnormally went beneath us (rather than the usual over the top of the UK) and across the English channel (trapping in the low pressure, thus rain) and just stayed there for six weeks.

PumpkinPie2016 · 09/09/2023 13:16

I'm in the NW and it's been horrible this week 🥵

I teach and school has been boiling. My room is normally not too bad with blinds down and windows open but yesterday it was grim. My poor Y8s P5 were sweltering 🥵

This morning DS had a local athletics event so we have boiled again (despite cool clothing, plenty of water, hats and suncream).

Personally, I'd far rather the cooler Autumn temps and winter. It's supposed to be cooler next week so fingers crossed.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2023 13:29

would you rather be up in the morning in the freezing cold and dark de-icing your car?! Really?! No?!

Don't drive so would be walking to the station but would I prefer that walk in the cold to this? damned right I would.

bluewanda · 09/09/2023 13:32

The weekend is wasted as I’m too hot and uncomfortable to do anything. I’m actually feeling quite breathless. Hate it.

hoophoophooray · 09/09/2023 13:51

My current building site is down to the limestone at the moment. The white limestone. Which is turning the whole site into a giant oven. I couldn't hack it yesterday and left early. Luckily I'm the client so I can do that..

Legale · 09/09/2023 13:53

Ooh just saw mentioning of deicing the car on a cold, dark, winter's morning - yes please!!! Then I can get in and turn the heating on and look at how lovely the countryside is when it's covered in snow/ice, rather than just wish I was where I needed to be, to escape a boiling car and glaring sunlight. 😣

tallsmallmum · 09/09/2023 13:57

would you rather be up in the morning in the freezing cold and dark de-icing your car?! Really?! No?!

Absolutely I would! I come alive in cold weather once I feel cold air in my chest and see a sparkle of frost I'm energised!

ilovesooty · 09/09/2023 14:01

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/09/2023 00:09

i am thoroughly enjoying it!!

It’s about time we got some heat after the shit show of a summer we have had

Agreed.

TMess · 09/09/2023 14:02

It’s about 40 where I am and I’m due to give birth any day…I have never looked worse. Usually I enjoy hot weather but the sweating + waddling is doing me in. 😂 Took my DC out to play and all the pitying looks and comments confirmed that I look as bad as I feel!

IDriveMySupernova · 09/09/2023 14:06

I’m struggling too and I’ve got to get in the car soon. My aircon has stopped working and it’s been in the sun so it’s going to be awful.

I normally go out for walks every day but I can’t do that in this heat. I sweat horribly and get palpitations as my blood pressure is naturally low and the heat makes it even lower.

Great on holiday when you can lounge around all day, getting in and out of the pool or cooling down with the aircon. Otherwise I prefer cold weather.

sarahh96 · 09/09/2023 14:43

So the question is, has anybody got one of those portable AC units. If you have, would you recommend?
I had one at work which was fine as long as you were stood in front of it but didn't really do much for the rest of the room.
Been thinking of getting one for a couple of years but which one???

MelodiousThunk · 09/09/2023 14:45

TheLostNights · 08/09/2023 22:07

Again, how can people enjoy this? I guess if they can afford air conditioning it makes it all a lot more comfortable? We cannot so are sweltering. London in a heatwave is absolutely vile. Yet a lot of people have wanted endless weeks of this weather. I honestly cannot wait until Monday when it is cooler. Tomorrow will be horrendous.

It’s not hard to understand. Different people like different things. It’s 30°C here today. I’ve just done an 80km bike ride this morning, it was glorious, like riding in France or Spain.

DrinkingWineInBed · 09/09/2023 14:50

@sarahh96 we have portable ac units and would recommend. We have Meaco ones which we bought from John Lewis.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/09/2023 15:09

@MelodiousThunk exactly. I am in London. No air con.

I am sitting in a shady area of a park eating lunch and it is lovely. Warm with a slight breeze.

We are going to an outdoor music event tomorrow.

You just need to roll with it rather than fight it. I am wearing a loose cotton top with a sweat wicking base layer, denim shorts and a straw hat. I always carry a bottle of cold water and large Indian muslin scarf which is great for mopping sweat. I also just accept I will get a bit sweaty. We were sightseeing around a Fench city in temperatures slightly higher than this in July and it was fine.

Mr Monkey is running a half marathon tomorrow morning - which is where I draw the line!
