To think the Tories must actually want to loose the next election?

School closures for repairs just before the term starts is bonkers. Are they now content with the amount of money they have plundered and now want Labour to inherit the mess or are they hoping that the dumb electorate will still vote for them or say " well the cost of living has hit everywhere...its nothing to do with Brexit?" Or " but boats."?
I don't get it.

You would do better to answer the question.

The increasing impression being that Labour beyond deploying an eye watering woke agenda and penalising everyone trying to actually work for a living and going to make things even worse, and if you are a ‘woman’ in ways you cant even imagine.

Are you a Daily Mail reader?

megletthesecond · 04/09/2023 14:43

jacky I swear blind it'll be a repeat of 92.

The Tory donors and Fleet Street will manipulate it to their advantage somehow.

Considering we aren't even in an election year (although admittedly with this shower, I'm not betting) then it's not so clear cut.

One thing Keir and Labour appear to be doing quite well is avoid the aura of triumphalism that Labour made the mistake of pumping in 92. No Sheffielburg rallies hopefully ever again.

What did for Labour in 92 was that ultimately John Major was up to the job and had the balls to corral his own side. Something nobody would ever accuse Rish! of.

Voted for Tories mostly for 20 years, simply because I wanted to vote for a low tax party. Will vote Labour next time but feel like emigrating the country is in such a mess

it’s almost like there might be a connection between long term under investment and some of the problems we are having. Weird.

You're not going to get an answer or if you do its unlikely to make sense Duncin

I've said it once, and I'll say it again.

You have to believe a lot of things that aren't true in order to want to vote Tory these days.

And they know it.

That's why they actively court the thickest, left school at 14, most in thrall to conspiracy theorists, never let facts get in the way of a bit of hysteria, politics of aggrievedness types.

Those people all the Tory party have left.

Yes.

And the lower tax wasn't for US silly!

It was for them and their mates.

We have the highest tax burden since the war.

AND unprecedented levels of debt.

AND a crumbling country.

It's almost as if the Tories govern for their own benefit and not for ours or the country's isn't it?

Who, ironically, are most likely to be unable to vote due to the new ID rules.

Rules I suspect will be neutered with "guidelines" by the next election.

Yes apparently nobody spelled out firmly enough to the Minister in charge that it wouldn't just affect the other lot's voters.

You would do better to answer the question @Lastchancechica, given this is a thread about the Tories. Why would anyone vote for the them in the next election? How are they going to turn the UK around and repair the damage they've done?

Or is the extent of their policies just that they're not Labour?

Pleasenowthatsenough · 04/09/2023 15:01

*Sadly there are enough die-hard Tory voters who'll vote for them regardless.
My prediction for the next election is a repeat of past election scenarious. Mumsnet, social media etc will be full of posts saying the Tories are finished and bound to lose. Tory voters will largely remain silent
Everyone will be astonished when the Tories win *

I can’t help but agree and despair.

jcyclops · 04/09/2023 15:01

Nobody can stop Labour winning an overall majority at the next election - and that nobody is Keir Starmer.

Oh, they did. This is the civil service. However they weren't listened to.

I'm predicting that before the next election (and given there are 2 coming up, it might be sooner rather than later) the Electoral Commission will be asked to "clarify" the new legislation in such a way that the only way to be refused a vote is if you wear a T-Shirt saying "I am a voting fraudster" on it while whistling "If I were a rich man" and flossing. It's the British way. You know it makes sense.

Also posters need to remember that the official Tory party line is that Rish! is a new phase, and the previous 12 years have nothing to do with him.

I'm not sure Rishi will be the Tory leader at the next GE.😆

DuncinToffee · 04/09/2023 15:08

It won't be Gillian Keegan either after her little outburst on ITV

Part of me thinks maybe we should all vote tory and let them have another 4 years to sort their shit out.
The other part of me is horrified we could end up with them for another 4 years and dread to think what else they could dream up to destroy the uk

They've had 13 years.

If they wanted to sort anything at all out, that's quite long enough, surely.

Everanewbie · 04/09/2023 15:10

I think a large part of the problem here is that this siege mentality doesn't take any voters with you. Instead of making a rational argument as to why a habitual Conservative voter should consider voting Labour, or indeed perhaps LD, Green or SNP, you attack them as being thick, hysterical and conspiracy theorists. You and your mates might like the 'evil self serving tory' comments and give yourselves a slap on the back, but on the other side someone is saying 'stupid woke money squandering swines who want to take my hard earned money and give it to people that can't be bothered to work'. Popular stuff among fascist cab drivers and pub bores. Both are equally lazy generalisations without nuance.

Politics is a spectrum. Some say even a horseshoe where extreme left and right almost meet. Those who believe in personal responsibility and tend to believe that the state should stay out of their lives as far as possible tend to go blue. Those who believe that everyone should be looked after by the state and it the prosperity of individuals is the responsibility of the state typically go red. Most people sit somewhere between these. You win elections by persuading those people.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/09/2023 15:06

Oh, he will. After all if they are going to lose, they need to do it with someone that can then immediately jettison in order to try and pretend they have sorted things out. Scape goat may sound cruel, but there are historical precedents.

So now we know that, we can speculate on how things are shaping up to replace him. A quite insightful discussion I read recently noted that while whoever wants to takeover when Rish! is trounced really needs to start their campaign now, it will be a lot easy when there are only 100 Tory MPs to court than the 350 we have now. Especially when so many are standing down.

For that reason, the recent reanimation of the Bravertron seems noteworthy.

SerendipityJane · 04/09/2023 15:15

Since we have already established on this thread that a lot of Tory voters don't apply any critical thinking to their vote (do I really need to cite the posts) then that seems like an awful lot of work for no reward.

"So, Prime Minister, what would you like to talk about ?" was how Alec Douglas-Homes first TV interview went. Plus ca change, n'est ce pas ?

Blush for her. If you want to be thanked for doing a good job Gillian, try doing a good job!

@Everanewbie if, as you say, calling people thick makes them vote Tory you can bet your bottom dollar Tory shills will be doing it. So there's no point in anyone else holding their tongue.

Pretty odd considering the Tories have never been a low tax party (unless you are mega wealthy).

pinkfondu · 04/09/2023 15:16

Tbh I wouldn't be suprised, but if that is the case we should be very worried as it means worse is to come and they want no part of it

What is the word for someone who bases a decision on an assertion from a political party without applying their own checks :

A) twat
B) bellend
C) thick

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/09/2023 15:24

Yes, but they want to steal as much as possible from the country first.

They have doubled the “severance” pay for MPs who lose their seats deliberately because they know loads of them will be in this position.

They’re an absolute disgrace
