Not really an AIBU, posting for traffic. Skinny jeans have seemed to be on the out for a while. Is the current fashion straight leg? High rise? Wide leg? What say you, MN?

High waisted boot cut are "in" but they look awful. I'll stick to skinny /slim fit until forever 😄

Mycatisthebestever · 03/09/2023 16:05

Isn't it that most of us wear what suits us at the end of the day, what flatters our figure as opposed to trends ? Isn't that how it should be? Yeah youngsters will want to be " in fashion" of course they will.

RampantIvy · 03/09/2023 16:09

Exactly @Mycatisthebestever.
Who are the fashion police who declare that something is dated, when clearly the vast majority of people don't seem to follow this advice?

But even “in fashion” is subjective.
It’s just what all the teens are wearing in UK suburbia. It’s not reflective of high end fashion.

Mycatisthebestever · 03/09/2023 16:42

I was browsing a bit more of that website just to see what was "new in" and am so surprised by stuff on there - eg Columbia tops and jackets. Columbia has always been seen as "lower end" wear as opposed to other brands.

Super skinny ripped.

the only ones i wear. I absolutely loathe ill fitting clothes in women. Show off your figures! Dont hide away behind a baggy 4 sizes too big

“Show off your figures”Er, no thanks Gok Wan.

The vast majority? Certainly not where I live in London, skinnies are unusual.

RedPony1 · 04/09/2023 10:58

You can't get me out of my skinnies! 😂

I wear straight leg showing the ponies inhand and i hate them.

I don't live in London. I think it is probably area and age specific. Where I live most people wear skinnies because it is more practical. We get a lot of rain, and walking in mud in floor length wide leg trousers is really impractical. Also I don't know many people under 40, except for DD and her friends. The young ones don't wear skinnies though.

fruitnutz · 09/09/2023 11:28

More flattering than skinnies imo. They do get scuffed though.

See I don’t find these flattering (just my opinion though). They’re hiding the slimmest part of her leg.

I don't think they're flattering and the pavement sweeping looks slightly ludicrous. Now a PP has mentioned my little pony legs, I can't unsee it....

Told my mum the other day I can’t cope with bootcut not being available and she said I had to move on!! (I’m 43 and she’s 75!) Whatever was wrong with bootcut?!

I was jeans shopping with my daughter today, there were bootcuts in most places. I rate Monki for a good range of styles and colours.

Is that Kate Moss? Is weird that she's basically wearing my 6th form uniform from about 97, but that picture makes her thighs look chunky- which is emphasised by the wide leg.

LuckySantangelo35 · 10/09/2023 09:16

! Skinny jeans are not in fashion !

that doesn’t mean don’t wear them if you like ‘em, but let’s not kid ourselves that they are still fashionable and in.

A huge number of people haven't got the memo then.

How do you define what is and isn't in fashion, given that so many people are wearing what the fashion police class as deeply unfashionable clothes? Also, the shops are full of skinny jeans.

Yoghurtpotsatdawn · 10/09/2023 10:24

if those jeans make Kate Moss’s thighs look a bit chunky, god help me if I bought something similar. And at 62 all I can think of when I look at her, is waiting for some poor doctor trying to find a bed for me while I lie on a trolley in A&E for 17 hours with a broken hip.

LuckySantangelo35 · 10/09/2023 10:45

@RampantIvy

lots of people might be wearing them but it doesn’t mean they are fashionable. It’s just people continuing to wear them cos they like them, and that’s fine. But they are absolutely not in fashion - tight clothes just aren’t anymore

Fair enough, but how do you define what is in fashion? Clearly the fact that a significant number of people are wearing a particular style isn't the answer.

Is it because you read about it in a fashion magazine or online blog? Other?

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/09/2023 08:33

@RampantIvy

yes, I read it in Grazia magazine and so it must be true 🙄

Come on, you know they are not in fashion just as much as I do! And that is ok!

What is in fashion is something sufficiently different to a few weeks/months ago, so you have to go out and buy new clothes to stay 'current'.

Imagine if everyone just bought clothes that suited them and they liked and they wore them until they wore out?

LlynTegid · 11/09/2023 08:54

Absolutely no idea OP, cannot help you here. Fashion to me is a song by the late David Bowie.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 11/09/2023 10:28

Tight clothes certainly are in fashion amongst young people, it's just the silhouette is inverted, so baggy combats on the bottom, tight crop top or skinny arms on the top half. I know as I work at a uni and deliver my dd to college and there are literally thousands and thousands of young people wearing this exact combo! I saw one girl wearing a bikini. I don't think you can get tighter than that!

Baggy bottoms and crop tops also show off the stomach, which few over 30/40 are willing to do, so that's an added plus as far as the youngies are concerned.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 11/09/2023 10:31

I know this is not a look for me though, so in some ways it's quite freeing, I can look 'nice' in my own style (sometimes skinnies and baggy top with chunky boots, sometimes bootcut/flares with jacket) knowing I'm not fully in fashion, but not minding so much.

There was a time everyone of all generations was wearing similar clothes (the skinny era) but young people probably didn't like that so much, hence the 90's low rise/flat stomach look.

LuckySantangelo35 · 11/09/2023 10:56

Exactly! It’s tight /fitted on top, bottom half baggy. Therefore skinny jeans are out!
p.s plenty of women over 30 are happy to bare their midriffs!
