to tell DH he can't keep eating that

Every day after work DH buys a share bag of some kind of chocolate, twirl bites, buttons, whatever and eats the whole bag. AIBU to think it is too much to have daily? This isn't me caring about weight gain, this is me caring that it's unhealthy.

I think some people don’t see it as a ‘small pleasure’ so much as something that will long term cause you problems.

Well that’s my choice that only affects me. Other people objecting are projecting their scruples about food. Nowt to do with me.

I exercise to a high intensity 3 times a week and we do a 7 mile walk as a family every Sunday. I have a varied diet but I also have at 600 calories a day or so on treats. I’m slim and healthy and I pity people who’d be afraid to do things like that.

I also just wish that some people would confess to being fattist rather than the faux concern over other people’s health.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 30/08/2023 15:53

Those of you making ‘witty’ comments targeting what you label competitive under-eaters, do you honestly think scoffing over 600 Cals of high fat high sugar chocolate every day is an ok fine thing to do?

If that's what he wants to eat and spend his money on, then yes, of course.

It's nobody else's business.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 30/08/2023 15:54

Anyone else want to know what the DH replied back to being told ' you can't keep eating that'?

I imagine he just glanced at you and just carried on ...

WeetabixTowels · 30/08/2023 15:54

<Whispers> I also have a bottle of Coca Cola every day. Sometimes 2 😱

But then I barely drink alcohol.

Oh well!

Lots of things in life can potentially cause us long-term problems. It's impossible to live a 100% healthy life and insane to fixate on that as a goal. Most of us find some sort of balance between healthy and less-healthy and you know what, it all ends up FINE.

It's good for the soul to treat yourself to nice food you enjoy, anyway. If someone else wants to do that why on earth would I want to stop them?

Because they like making people feel like shit, probably because there’s something wrong in their own lives.

If people don’t see a bag of buttons a ‘small pleasure’ then whoppee-shits for them. But you don’t get to dictate that it isn’t a small pleasure for someone else.

You could say the same about practically everything in life. Spending too much time staring at screens and using MN, for example Wink

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 30/08/2023 16:07

It's a MAN committing this sin

If it was a mumsnetters doing this the replies would be supportive and all 'you do you hun'

Codependantnomore · 30/08/2023 16:14

I think that is a lot of chocolate in one sitting and yes it is unhealthy and every day is way too much.

Naominumbers · 30/08/2023 16:15

You can give your opinion but it's his body, his choice.

LuckySantangelo35 · 30/08/2023 16:16

@BitOutOfPractice
@Mamansparkles is exactly right… she even rounded up. A 119g bag of giant buttons contains 636.6kcal to be precise.

Yes it’s on top of meals etc but we have no idea of the chaps calorie needs. Sugars not great, we all know that, but this may be his only vice!

Thanks - yes, it's a 119g bag and I did the maths (calories per 100g x 1.19) and rounded up.
I did not say it was healthy! But it also isn't 1000 calories.

itsallnewnow · 30/08/2023 16:24

Interesting choice of language he's 'scoffing' or 'scarfing it down' can he not just be eating it 🤷🏻‍♀️ what if this is his only
Vice? Should DP stop me having a glass of wine on a Friday night as it's n healthy 🤷🏻‍♀️ where does it end

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 30/08/2023 16:26

The MENZ scoff and scarf

Twee mumsnetters merely nibble chocolate and eat massive salads

TheAOEAztec · 30/08/2023 16:31

Well it's understandable that so many will have big issue with 100g of chocolate. As I gather it's actual poison deadly to many mumsnetters with immediate effect.

The only issue I have with this is that Cadburys chocolate is shit and has been for years and I think he needs to expand his palate to better things like Ritrer Sport 😁

VimtoVimto · 30/08/2023 16:55

Is anyone else contemplating buying a share bag to eat all by themselves?

Mercurial123 · 30/08/2023 18:16

What size is the bag? Share bags go from 95 g up to 240 g for the giant size.

Haha I was just thinking the same thing 😃

I was waiting for the competitive overeaters.

Indeed. I agree. But do you think it is a healthy thing to do? To eat one of these bags every day?

And to the extent of ridiculing someone who questions this habit as a competitive under eater / clutching pearls at a sniff of a Minstrel etc?

Whether it's healthy or not is largely irrelevant, tbh.

People wouldn't get comments about being competitive under-eaters if they didn't insist on talking about having the "ick" towards people who eat anything remotely unhealthy, either.

MarshyMcMarshFace · 30/08/2023 18:37

WeetabixTowels · 30/08/2023 15:49

@MarshyMcMarshFace

do you honestly think scoffing over 600 Cals of high fat high sugar chocolate every day is an ok fine thing to do?

Abso-bloody-lutely.

Can you explain exactly what isn’t ok about it? I’m not harming anyone, I’m not doing something immoral and dangerous. Life is short and full of misery, if I denied myself small pleasures for fear of food being something wrong I’d have serious words with why I’d turned into such a weirdo

Fair enough. I didn’t mean ‘not ok’ in a value judgement context but health. Is it really ok health-wise to eat one of these bags every day?

Lots of us enjoy habits that are not ideal for our health. I drink red wine more days than not and over 14 units most weeks.

But if someone I loved told me they were concerned about my health (and therefore life) I wouldn’t take the piss and make jokes about people sniffing the label on a beer bottle and being competitive teetotallers. Because my habit IS unhealthy. I’m still allowed to make my choice but I can’t pretend it is healthy.

WeetabixTowels · 30/08/2023 18:38

But do you think it is a healthy thing to do? To eat one of these bags every day?

It’s not healthy but who gives a shit. we all do unhealthy things every day - you mind you health and let others mind theirs.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 30/08/2023 18:40

You may not say it, but that is what happens on the vast majority of MN threads about alcohol consumption.

Someone will say they drink three bottles of wine a week and ask if it's too much, and within the first five responses, someone will pop up and say "you won't get a realistic answer here OP, anyone who thinks that's too much probably only has a thimble of sherry at Christmas..."

itsmylife7 · 30/08/2023 18:45

Cholesterol and diabetes must surely be a risk with this amount of chocolate.

WeetabixTowels · 30/08/2023 18:51

I think it’s incredibly rich of you to berate others for being unhealthy when you have wine most days. I’m not judging you for the wine but I’m surprised you’re judging others for the chocolate

No one is pretending chocolate is healthy, literally no one has said that. they just don’t care that it isn’t healthy. Though I do feel wine and chocolate are different as one can easily lead to an addiction that destroys lives.the other doesn’t
