to tell DH he can't keep eating that

Every day after work DH buys a share bag of some kind of chocolate, twirl bites, buttons, whatever and eats the whole bag. AIBU to think it is too much to have daily? This isn't me caring about weight gain, this is me caring that it's unhealthy.

Yabu telling him anything.

Seashellies · 30/08/2023 13:49

It's greedy but it's up to him at the end of the day, presumably he's not putting the household into debt over a £1.50 bag of chocolate! I'd find it unappealing but me and DH have a similar approach to food, neither feel the need to eat a meals worth of calories on utter shite out of habit, but I wouldn't care if he did particularly.

BitOutOfPractice · 30/08/2023 13:49

According to supermarket website I looked at, @Mamansparkles that’s the calories per 100g. Not the whole bag.

even by your calculations, eating a “mere” extra 4,459 calories a week (that’s extra to meals) can’t be a great idea. That’s the equivalent to two days’ worth of recommended calorie intake for a woman.

I speak as a fat person who’s counting every calorie at the moment.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 30/08/2023 08:22

Those bags are only ever half full. Not much to them at all!

Still around 5/600 calories though!

FusionChefGeoff · 30/08/2023 14:05

My DH eats like a kid when left to his own devices because he just doesn't put good food as a priority so doesn't spend time or money on it. Beige / beans / carbs and sugar are his main food groups. He's not healthy and is overweight.

However, he's a grown man who I have zero control over and, until he wants to make changes, nothing I do will change that.

He's a clever bloke, he knows this is all shit but he doesn't care. So I don't either.

Toomanylaughs · 30/08/2023 14:09

Whether you’re slim or not, I doubt a share bag of chocolate on a daily basis is healthy. Especially if you are consuming other types of refined sugar throughout the day.

Thin does not equal healthy.

Look up “visceral fat” which is often hidden.

That said, OP it’s up to your husband. You can obviously raise health concerns but it will be down to him ultimately.

And I say this as someone who has sometimes has issues with eating massive amounts of cakes, and cookies and eating multiple services of savoury meals. It used to put my back up when people commented too much on what and how much I ate.

@BitOutOfPractice
@Mamansparkles is exactly right… she even rounded up. A 119g bag of giant buttons contains 636.6kcal to be precise.

Yes it’s on top of meals etc but we have no idea of the chaps calorie needs. Sugars not great, we all know that, but this may be his only vice!

Gets (large) popcorn and waits for competitive undereaters….

Haha I was just thinking the same thing 😃

SpilltheTea · 30/08/2023 14:13

Only if you're prepared for him to point out the unhealthy things you do.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 30/08/2023 14:26

@BitOutOfPractice

Well the TWIRL bites come on at just under 600 cals so yes, the bags can be smaller than you'd think!

BitOutOfPractice · 30/08/2023 14:58

@SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything ah well, that’s ok then. It’s only a “mere” extra 4,200 calories a week. Empty calories. On top of meals (according to the op) so that’s fine 🙄

notacooldad · 30/08/2023 15:06

It is unhealthy and a waste of money.
So are lots of things! I dont' see why it is a waste of money if it is something he enjoys.
You could say virtually everything is a waste of money if you don't actually need it.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 30/08/2023 15:07

Could be worse...he could be a 'vaper'

Well, exactly.

Is your diet perfect, OP?

WeetabixTowels · 30/08/2023 15:30

MN is a terrible place to ask for food advice. So many undiagnosed eating disorders

WeetabixTowels · 30/08/2023 15:32

It is unhealthy and a waste of money

When I was growing up most people had at least one parent who would buy 20 fags a day and maybe a bottle of wine, and they’d smoke it while the whole family including kids watched the soaps. So funny to think a £1.50 packet of chocolate buttons causes such a reaction these days 🤣🤣

SecretVictoria · 30/08/2023 15:37

Inertia · 30/08/2023 09:35

We’d share out one of those bags between my family of 26, and then we’d be far too full to even look at a chocolate for at least a week.

I don’t think there’s enough protein in those packs of chocolate- I would take them off him and give him some eggs and hummus instead . 🙂

🤣🤣

gannett · 30/08/2023 15:37

fearfuloffluff · 30/08/2023 08:26

It's still bad for him though. Might not make him gain weight but will affect mood, cause inflammation in the gut, increase risk of cancers later on etc.

Cracking up at the idea of someone I'm in an adult relationship with telling me that a few chocolates will give me cancer.

Absolutely no one is under the illusion that chocolate is healthy so I don't know what you think this will achieve.

You really can't tell other adults what they can and can't eat.

MarshyMcMarshFace · 30/08/2023 15:38

Those of you making ‘witty’ comments targeting what you label competitive under-eaters, do you honestly think scoffing over 600 Cals of high fat high sugar chocolate every day is an ok fine thing to do?

It isn’t as if the OP’s thread is about her DH eating a Freddo Frog or even 1 Mars Bar every day.

OK, everyone / most people / lots of people would happily eat one of these bags from time to time, but do you really think it is take-the-piss territory for to comment on this as an everyday thing?

Is it really ‘competitive under eating’ to agree that this is not a great habit? Or do you just like working the tedious old ‘jokes’?

Hibiscrubbed · 30/08/2023 15:42

I wouldn’t personally waste calories on a bag of chocolate. I’d be left feeling a bit sick and annoyed with myself at a loss of control as it’s not proportionate or even particularly rewarding to scarf it down.

But to me, being fit, lean, strong and healthy is important due to a heart condition. I also, and don’t slay me for this, don’t want to be fat. It would make me extremely miserable to have a body like that.

I always assumed it just makes some posters feel better about not having good diets and sedentary lifestyles.

@MarshyMcMarshFace

do you honestly think scoffing over 600 Cals of high fat high sugar chocolate every day is an ok fine thing to do?

Abso-bloody-lutely.

Can you explain exactly what isn’t ok about it? I’m not harming anyone, I’m not doing something immoral and dangerous. Life is short and full of misery, if I denied myself small pleasures for fear of food being something wrong I’d have serious words with why I’d turned into such a weirdo

I think some people don’t see it as a ‘small pleasure’ so much as something that will long term cause you problems.
