So is formula milk UPF?

It is, right? I mean, the ingredients list certainly is. And it’s listed on the BBC website as an UPF.

Going to be interested to see if this influences the BF/FF debate now that it looks like awareness of UPF is about to skyrocket. Does it even matter when they’re only on it for about a year? Does that fact that it’s an UPF actually add any info to the pre-existing evidence on BF/FF?

God this thread is so BORING the same whinging @Redebs @Twizbe that pop up on any thread that mentions breastfeeding and start harping on and rehashing the same arguments. Jeez. The thread title is ‘is formula UPF’ not come on this thread and repeat what you’ve said on multiple times on other threads as you can shoehorn breastfeeding is better into the discussion.

I feel like setting up a bingo card for breastfeeding discussion - it’s the same crap over and over.

It's because its discouraging breastfeeding. Yeah don't get me wrong I imagine it's hard work and tiring doing formula. It is easier to just put baby on the boob but obstacles can get in the way. Pain. Tongue tie etc not getting the right support can be frustrating. But it is the easy way out because its not easy breastfeeding in the beginning. For some it can be hard work for months. Especially if youre pumping for not being able to latch baba. Because that does take its toll on you.

Surely it’s finding it that difficult that discourages breastfeeding far more than formula advertising! So many women, even on this thread alone, have wanted to breastfeed and had to give up. They seem to have been far more influenced by positive breastfeeding messages (that didn’t quite work out in reality) than advertising for a product aimed at older babies.

Twizbe · 29/08/2023 17:29

@Iam4eels you’ve hit the point. The advertisers have shown time and time again to not keep to factual information.

Twizbe · 29/08/2023 17:31

@SOSWhen i don’t believe I was the one to derail the thread. Nor have I said anything about how anyone should feed their baby.

Edited

It still discouraging. But the product wasn't getting aimed at older babies. It was getting aimed at 0 to 6 months. Prime time for breastfeeding

Everyone know that formula exists! It could only discourage breastfeeding if people weren’t aware of its existence.

Parker231 · 29/08/2023 17:51

Advertising had no impact onto my decision to only use formula. It was something i decided on whilst pregnant. I bought the brand the local supermarket stocked the most of so easily available. Nothing to do with advertising different brands

When? We have pretty strict advertising laws on this country and an advertising standards agency for raising concerns about claims in adverts.

Twizbe · 29/08/2023 18:03

Look up the WHO code and the history behind it and the history of formula advertising. Lots of examples.

Mostly in this country it’s making claims that aren’t backed up with evidence. E.g. you need to ‘move on’ from breastfeeding or first stage formula at 6 months. Colic and constipation milk which has no evidence that it does anything.

Well it obviously does otherwise boots wouldn't of gotten into trouble for doing it. And I'm glad they've been told to not do it.

Also "The WHO has found that “inappropriate marketing of breast milk substitutes” has undermined efforts to increase breastfeeding rates and duration worldwide". Was said.

Jamtartforme · 29/08/2023 19:46

Out of interest why is it always women who breastfeed who take such an ‘interest’ in other women’s feeding choices? I breastfeed, I couldn’t care less what other women do, let alone want to start threads because I’m ‘interested’ in informing them what they’re feeding their baby is artificially made like they don’t already know.

I’m also dying to know what these natural alternatives to formula would be. Does anyone have any ideas?

My first child was mix fed from the beginning. She’s fine. My second has been EBF from day 1, he has eczema, CMPA and is being investigated for other allergies. He’s never had a drop of formula and yet he seems to be such a reactive baby. My first was also slightly prem whereas he wasn’t.

To be honest, if I could go back six months I would’ve mix fed from the beginning.

The comment is irrelevant - some of us want to use formula. Are you proposing taking away our rights to feed our babies in the way we want to?

RosieS22 · 29/08/2023 20:17

@Jamtartforme this post makes no sense.
If your baby has CMPA, your baby has CMPA.
How you feed them would change nothing.
He'd probably have reacted worse to the formula and would have needed prescribed dairy free formula if you didn't want to EBF.

I disagree. I don’t think babies are born with allergies, they develop them. It’s anecdata, but most of the babies I know with allergies/eczema/reactive type things are breastfed.

Someone did just that earlier. It wasn't pp though.

They said formula should be prescription only for those who can't breastfeed and those who don't want to breastfeed would have no choice.

Doesn't matter if your baby is breastfed or formula fed. If you have allergies in the family they are more likely to get them. I know formula fed babies who've had really bad allergies. Been lactose intolerance to formula. CMPA is more likely to happen in formula fed babies but breastfed babies can get it but more common in formula babies.

Also breastfeeding can help baby not get allergies. My partner has an allergy to certain nuts. HV told me to eat them whilst breastfeeding. Its not a competition between the two. So far so good. He's got no allergy and I know it can still develop later on. But I make sure to give him nutty foods often.

Jamtartforme · 29/08/2023 20:34

My family don’t have allergies. I have none. I drank milk while pregnant and ate yoghurt. Just my experience and personal suspicion.

Jamtartforme · 29/08/2023 20:35

And by the way you can’t be allergic to lactose. Lactose intolerance is not an allergy, they’re separate things.

Your baby might have reacted more if you did formula feed. But you won't know as you didn't.

When they have cmpa you have to give them a different formula tho.
