To think being female and white is what meant Lucy Letby could continue her crimes?

Let's face it, the reality is as women we are often disadvantaged but being a woman in this case is what meant Lucy went under the radar for so long and the fact she was white combined with this and looked like the 'girl next door' is what meant more babies lost their lives than needed to.

Just imagine, a male non white nurse was in the same position he would have been called out much much earlier

Let's hope this helps people think about how harmful stereotyping can actually be.

Sorry to all the families that lost babies in all of this 💐

What a load of bollocks. Beverley Allitt couldn't have been more white. She wasn't picked up quickly either because people and especially nurses don't kill people and especially not babies...except they do and the ones I know of are overwhelmingly white.

I am not denying racism exists but let's not kid ourselves that a person of colour doing this would have been detected any faster.

Nurses don't kill people, they don't kill children and babies...it's unthinkable. And that's why they get away with it for so long.

loislovesstewie · 30/08/2023 11:59

Harold Shipman got away with it for ages, because doctors don't kill, do they?

MissTrip82 · 30/08/2023 12:21

Yep I work in a hospital. Did not surprise me one iota that the consultant who was a POC who raised concerns was disbelieved and forced to apologise by hospital management.

MavisMcMinty · 30/08/2023 12:29

Yes, along with three other white consultants.

But doctors don't kill people either and that's what the NHS management obliquely accused the doctors of - ganging up and placing the blame on LL to draw attention away from their own doings. The Cheief executive even advised LL during her review following the allegations.

Do you really think the management would have helped one of the thousands of nurses brought in from abroad in this way? I highly doubt it. These nurses are often tricked into contracts and fear leaving the trust as they have to pay a penalty for leaving early.

I do think something stinks with regard to Letby and her Father having access like they seemed to, to the Chief Executive. However I don't believe it a race issue. Doubtful other staff members would ask Daddy to get involved in their work life.

Regarding foreign nurses paying penalties to leave early. Do remember that the trust which means the taxpayer has paid large sums of money to put them through exams to allow them to work in the UK as well as often paying up front for accomodation. It is not unreasonable to build in repayment clauses if they don't work the contracted term.

loislovesstewie · 30/08/2023 14:54

I don't think she asked her parents to intervene; they seemed to be very protective of her and over involved in her life. Even she thought it too much sometimes.

You may be right. Can't speak for you but I'd of been mortified if my parents were interfering in my work as an adult.

@CallumDansTransitVan That's true, that story detailing the experience of one surgeon certainly puts paid to the data from the Nursing and Midwifery Council which shows that black nurses made up 15.3% of new fitness to practice referrals, despite black nurses making up just 8.5% of the total register. Of those concerns raised, 62% of investigations against black nurses resulted in no case to answer. Tis true after all, there's nothing of an inherent racial bias when it comes to which HCPs are treated with suspicion and which are given the benefit of the doubt.

CallumDansTransitVan · 31/08/2023 20:53

To put those statistics into context, as I said earlier in the thread, you need to look at length of time in the post. Are POC more likely to be recent starts than White. In any job the last in is the most likely to be the fall guy when things go wrong.
Then using the 62% of allegations are unfounded. Again you need to show the amount of allegations against White nurses and if a similar percentage are unfounded there also.

BreakTheChain · 31/08/2023 21:03

I think she went on for so long because people don't want to believe that a human is capable of doing something so horrific. It is easier to believe that these were very sad non preventable deaths than very deliberate and horrific murders. I do think it's found to be more shocking because it is a woman and murder tends to be committed by men more than women but I'm not sure a man would have been stopped quickly either. Such an awful thing to have happened and no real reason as to why. She is pure evil

Scaryghost · 31/08/2023 21:09

It was because she was ‘the girl next door’. Sweet, kind, smiling, bubbly and lovely young lady.

I was actually hoping that she would be found innocent. I thought they’d find evidence that every death had been natural. I was hoping this because I couldn’t believe anyone would be so evil. Now I know evil truly exists.

I was actually like you. I was hoping it would turn out to be a coincidence of epic proportions, as finding out just how (insert expletive) up the NHS is/was with regard to these deaths is frightening.

Don't bother, that poster is mind-numbingly racist and you can't argue with racist.

RocketIceLollie · 31/08/2023 22:34

I think people need to let this case go now. It's been concluded and from the sounds of it a fully compliant investigation is going to take place. No need to be spending time dreaming up ludicrous theories such as this thread opening post.
