What are all pensioners getting another £300 this winter??

1000 replies

F0RBIDDENFRUIT · 25/08/2023 13:12

They are amongst the richest people in the country, yes there are poor pensioners but a lot of them are way richer than anyone else.

£300 more for energy, none of the old people I know need this, they all have more money than their children.

Just because they vote, that is the only reason they can be doing this.

My parents got two lots of this payment last time, one for their main home and one for their second home. 🤐

Of course, you won't benefit from your inheritance from your parents when they're no longer with you, I'm sure you'll donate the proceeds from the sale of both properties to deserving charitable causes HaloHmm

beAsensible1 · 25/08/2023 14:00

your right OP. the same ones who want to pull up the draw bridge after the free uni, low house prices and clean air.

we're stuck in the shitter and they'll be protesting new house building so we can all sell our kidneys to afford a home.

I'm pissed off!

Let's just abolish everything except the very basic state pension. I am sure you will all be glad of this when you are old.

I don’t think many my age (30s) are expecting to receive a state pension at all once we’re finally able to retire in our 70s. I certainly don’t!

When a lot of people get old there won't be a state pension. Or the qualifying age will be years above where it is now. It's going up on a regular basis. More and more people will die before they ever see a state pension.

The country will be screwed for years paying off the debt it has incurred giving unnecessary benefits like this.

Yes I've read the thread - but I am answering the OP's question........

No private pension because he was self employed and we were very poor. Hand to mouth poor. A lot of people are, shockingly, although you wouldn't think it with threads like this.

MN at its finest Hmm

Indeed - and instead of using government funds to benefit those in need, some prefer to give it to wealthy pensioners.

Oh, well that is fine if you passively accept that your lives will be worse than the generations before you.

Cakemakes · 25/08/2023 14:02

Also yes, many of these people did make a fortune out of rising house prices- entirely unearned money. If they’re assets rich they can sell that asset or do equity release.

Won't most pass this onto their children? Surely that's decent for social mobility if a generation who before wouldn't have had land/property were able to get on the ladder- it means their children and the generations to come will benefit. Shit for us whos parents couldn't afford it at least this way it's still benefiting some. Of course houses should be more affordable now etc but are most of these elderly people blowing all their money on crap or are they saving it and their assets?

Tinkerbyebye · 25/08/2023 14:02

SueVineer · 25/08/2023 13:35

They pay less tax on their income than working age people and get generous universal benefits unlike working age people

@SueVineer

where do you get that idea from? They pay exactly the same rate of tax as everybody else

explainthistomeplease · 25/08/2023 14:02

before a couple of years ago I'd have had the same sentiments. But do you know how WARM an infirm elderly person's home needs to be? They both died last year, but before they did, mum, who who'd had a catastrophic stroke, and dad, who had dementia needed the house so warm that I had to strip down to t shirts and bare legs to bear the temperature. Like a SAUNA, and they still felt cold.

True they could afford the bills (had either had the capacity to understand them - we had full time live in carers for them, who lived in shorts and t shirts while on duty). But perhaps the admin of means testing would have been more expensive.

I'd rather we sorted inheritance tax, raising the threshold slightly but hitting the top estates harder. We would have fallen under this and I would have felt it fair enough.

Every single one of these applies to those with disabilities (or caring for those with them).

And yet they’re expected to live on max of £129 per week (ESA) or £76 per week (carers allowance). How do they manage? I honestly have no idea.

It’s not a race to the bottom but it’s clear that there is only one kind of poverty that matters in this country.

Those of us on pip / Scottish disability payment got £150. Carers got £0.

Some of us did get the £150 warm home discount.

But yes I do agree.

Absolutely. I doubt we will get a state pension at all and certainly at a much later age than the existing pensioners did. I very much doubt it will be available universally in the future

That’s incorrect. They don’t pay ni even on earnings.

Agree with this. This is a miserable country to be a young working person.
No chance of a home where you are allowed to hang a picture and no way we could afford a family. And still working insane hours .

StarbucksSmarterSister · 25/08/2023 14:05

The £400 fuel discount on bills thatallof us received had a loophole that meant if you had a second home you got the deduction of the fuel bills for that as well as your main home. Nothing to do with being a pensioner.

Ah right. So nothing to do with the normal winter fuel payment.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 25/08/2023 14:05

lol at the old “worked all their lives” thing.

My parents (not millionaires but over halfway there) retired at 55. My dad worked for 30 of those years and my mum 12. They sold their house for 15 times what they bought it for, topped up their NI credits and now receive thousands per month between SP, savings interest, and occ pension schemes.

Their parents all lived to mid-80s so my dad may well be retired for as long as he worked and my mum twice as long.

Not everyone “worked all their lives”. Many were in the right place at the right time. Which isn’t a crime - but God am I sick of being told it was always down to their hard work!

Actually carers in Wales and Scotland got a payment. It was £500 in Wales. Not sure about Scotland.

I expect she just enjoys it.

Not entirely sure what you’re expecting me to do about it? I could go and rob some pensioners and redirect their £300 payments to the poor but I think that sort of thing is frowned upon.

Moooooooooooooooooo · 25/08/2023 14:08

Yes, let’s change the rules so when YOU become a pensioner YOU won’t benefit from those extra comforts. And while we’re at it let’s change all the rules and take away everything but the bare essentials for EVERYONE. That’ll make it right and fair, won’t it?

Glwysen · 25/08/2023 14:09

Child benefit got means tested easily enough - badly and unfairly but was still done

PickledPurplePickle · 25/08/2023 14:09

You are lucky to only know pensioners who aren't struggling - there are many that are having to choose between heat and food

I'm not saying that other people aren't in this situation, but the elderly don't really have the option to go and earn more money, and many cannot survive with no heat / food

Poivresel · 25/08/2023 14:10

Jamtartforme · 25/08/2023 13:46

No but why doesn’t he have a private pension out of interest?

Probably like many born in the 30’s/40’s into working classes there were no work pensions in place. My fil worked for a haulage company, he barely survived on his wages and certainly wouldn’t have had a private or company pension.
