Kids just ate raw fucking chicken pops feel so guilty

I'm a terrible mum. I just picked them up 🤷 as I thought they were the cooked version 🤢. They ate the whole pack before the guy told me. It's going to be a long messy weekend. 😭 They are going to be unwell and it's all my fault

My partner once managed to eat raw chicken. I called a nurse friend who said he was unlikely to be ill and he wasnt. She did say that chicken raised in the UK has an exceptionally low rate of salmonella so if it was British chicken they should be fine.

All Waitrose own brand chicken is British so fingers crossed!

I picked up a box of chorizo bites from the supermarket. Assumed they were cooked. Turns out I ate raw ones all the way home. I was fine, fortunately. I did think they were a bit soft...

Isn't all chorizo raw? It's dried meat, isn't it?

I'm lucky they have increased their food managed to include some veg and fruit 🙌. But it's hard work and i don't want to force them. It's that association between being sick and the food they have last are. Noro swept through nursery OBS not food. But they associates the food macaroni cheese with what they got unwell with. So they won't touch it now!

This seems to be a universal thing with humans-We associate the last thing we ate with being sick- even if the sickness was caused by a bug.
I can't eat spearmint Trebor mints because of this as a kid-

It's probably a survival mechanism - to make us avoid repeating the incident.

I am an Emetophobe too- I get really scared about being sick.

Such an odd take. Should the OP be busy wringing her hands or weaving her hair shirt?? Is it so hard to imagine someone seeking reassurance on a forum used by other mothers?

Hope the kids feel OK OP.

DiscoBeat · 24/08/2023 19:57

What are chicken pops? Are they like chicken nuggets? And were they cooked and needed to be reheated, or were they raw chicken?

I read your title as "raw chicken poop." I guess it could have been worse! Hope they are fine and you are feeling better now.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 24/08/2023 20:03

Why don’t you get a probiotic drink like Danone for them on safe side and just very clean diet eg omelette and plain cooked chicken and rice for next couple of days?

Fecksakereallygodreally · 24/08/2023 20:03

@DiscoBeat link in the previous page about what they are..some are ready to eat and some need to be cooked. But they look identical! Hence the confusion 🙀

@bobaloo that's only for the courgettes! 😁

Honestly the big glass of fizzy coke might help. Don’t know how. It’s backpacker lore when eating dodgy street food!

Yup! It's not lore, it's saved many a person.

Coke also imperative for dehydration/ diahorea-flat Coke has sugar you need for energy. Paired with Tuc biscuits (which you can get/ similar in even in v remote places) for salt. Honestly, I've nursed lots of folk with this. My mam was a pharmacist & swore by it.

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/08/2023 20:07

If your children are ND and have issues around food, they wouldn't have eaten it raw surely? They wouldn't have been able to stomach it. Hopefully they're the once with the pre-cooked chicken and all will be ok 🤞 good luck OP!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 24/08/2023 20:07

OP, hope your kids are fine. I ate all sorts of raw stuff as a child, sometimes I was sick sometimes not so I wouldn’t worry too much. They may have iron stomachs!

DiscoBeat · 24/08/2023 20:08

It does sounds as though the packaging needs to be clearer, if some are raw and some are cooked (rather than small print on the label, eg). I know that we shouldn't eat raw chicken, obviously, but I think also that if it's fresh and kept well then it reduces the risk (also these kind of processed things rarely have much actual meat in them which also helps)

Lemonyyy · 24/08/2023 20:10

One of my best mates is a doctor and a hardcore kayaker and swears by coke as a decent defence against dodgy tummy bacteria. Yeah n this occasion I’d take the lack of sleep over projectile vom!

also the people being snooty about chicken nuggets, get over yourselves 🙄

FelicityBennett · 24/08/2023 20:13

My husband did exactly the same, fed both my daughters raw breaded chicken in a sandwich , both ate most of them . They were both absolutely fine so don’t worry doesn’t necessarily give food poisoning. Stomach acid is pretty powerful stuff !

Fecksakereallygodreally · 24/08/2023 20:14

@Rememberthebathisrunning well done you for not freaking out and being a perfect human being. 🙄 I hand you a gold ⭐ for being a perfect fucking person.. I asked advice was freaking out. Did you notice only 2 have been shitty and that includes you! Guess want I didn't want to ring the doctors, 111 so I thought shock horrid I go on a forum that has advice and support from parents who might have been in the same situation! And guess what I was right! So go and stuff off with your unsupportive shit.

Not necessarily. Only if the particular chicken they ate has food poisoning bacteria in it. It's not a foregone conclusion

Exactly. As it was chicken pops, they were probably more filler and preservatives than raw chicken, so they kids will probably be fine.

NalafromtheLionKing · 24/08/2023 20:16

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 24/08/2023 19:13

Pretty sure they are cooked already but should be heated. So not technically raw chicken. Just keep an eye on them.

Agree, there is no mention of raw chicken and they would probably take longer to cook if raw.

Generally, anything from the fresh meat section needs cooking/heating but anything from the deli sections (ham, quiche etc) can be eaten as is. So if you found something like this by the ready to eat sausage rolls, it can be taken to a picnic and eaten from the packet but if it is near raw chicken etc, it should be cooked.

using new edit function 😁 but kids will be fine I’m sure, will just not have tasted as it should.

Pinotwoman82 · 24/08/2023 20:20

Hope your kids are ok?
ive done very similar, it’s hard when there’s so much to think about. Packaging should be made a lot clearer.

Islandermummy · 24/08/2023 20:24

If they were really raw I'm not sure your kids would have been able to eat them: they'd be really horrid. They are probably cooked but the idea is to crisp them up in the oven.

Hope your kids are fine, I'm sure they will be! If they do get poorly, try not to beat yourself up. We all make mistakes especially when we've got a lot going on x

SlightlyJaded · 24/08/2023 20:29

OP, was it these?

If so I think you might be ok. "Chopped and shaped" as per the description on Waitrose website usually indicates that the chicken has been cooked first and you have to re-heat it. Maybe that's what the 'man' was talking about when he said you have to cook it?
