How much do you roughly drink per day?

I think I'm about to discover I seriously don't drink anywhere near enough....

I roughly drink a day:
3 teas
500ml other juice/soda/rarely water 😳😳

I'm only asking as I'm wondering if I am dehydrated a lot of the time.. I just don't feel like I need to drink much 😬

2 coffees in the morning.
Tea mid afternoon, tea in evening.
Pint of water with a multi vitamin at dinner time.
A few mouthfuls of water while im in bed.

I dont think I drink enough.

Radiodread · 22/08/2023 12:48

The eight glasses a day thing is completely made up. Just drink enough so your daytime wees aren’t dark and are pale straw. That’s plenty.

StEtienne93 · 22/08/2023 12:49

It does vary a bit, but yesterday I drank 3x tea, 1x coffee and 4x 500ml bottles of water.

I need to drink quite a bit though, as I'm susceptible to water/kidney infections.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/08/2023 12:51

Wow. So many people barely drinking any water and only drinking diuretics that dehydrate like coffee and tea.

No, this theory has been debunked. Googling throws up many articles on this, here is one of the more reliable sources Do tea and coffee dehydrate?

The myth about caffeine and dehydration

Caffeinated drinks usually won't dehydrate you, but water is still your best option.

That’s nonsense, sorry. There are people on this thread literally telling you that they never get thirsty and subsist on the odd coffee and, as a result, feel extremely unwell. One poster even spoke at length about her kidney issues.

So, no, a lot of people’s bodies either aren’t very good at telling them to drink or they aren’t very good at listening. And, as a rule of thumb, if you’re thirsty, you’re already mildly dehydrated.

As a rule, the human body is very good at telling us that something is wrong - we feel thirst, hunger, tiredness etc. for a very good reason.

Most people just ignore it or think that it's not a big deal if they get a headache at the end of the day, or that they struggle to poo or their pee is a weird colour. If it's what you're used to then you probably have no reason to question it until it's pointed out to you by an outsider.

These people who feel unwell but don't connect it to their fluid intake are a prime example of that - their bodies are screaming out that there's a problem but they're either ignoring it or failing to put 2+2 together.

Sirzy · 22/08/2023 13:25

My understanding is that by the time the body is telling you it’s thirsty it is already at the point of it being a problem. Ideally you should be well enough hydrated that you don’t get thirsty.

I don't think it's quite as straightforward as that - thirst is just one possible indicator of dehydration. Yes, when you feel thirsty you should go and have a drink but it's not necessarily anything to worry about unless you're also experiencing other symptoms and generally feeling unwell.

VestaTilley · 22/08/2023 13:28

Four - six mugs of tea a day, two - three small glasses of water, one - two large glasses of orange squash.

DesTeeny · 22/08/2023 13:33

Some people do have lower hydration needs and you will get fluids from your food as well.

My DH always says I'm a lizard because I can go through the whole day on nothing but 2 cups of tea and a glass of water. However, I'm now pregnant and have suddenly found I'm incredibly thirsty so am drinking a small glass of OJ with breakfast (current craving), several pint glasses of water or squash at work along with at least 3 cups of decaf tea, then in the evenings I'll have another couple of pints of water and a non alcoholic gin or cider if I fancy it so it probably works out at something close to 6/7 pints, which is probably treble what I was drinking before!

shelbaby · 22/08/2023 13:42

Hardly anything. I'm actually sat here thinking I need to go fill my new water bottle. Bought with the intention that I need to drink more!

I've had 2 cups of tea (only drank half). Usually I'd maybe have a glass of juice and then a can of fizzy stuff and another tea before bed. I def have less than 1 litre a day most days.

My mum recently had a health condition where they wanted her to drink more to help until she got her op. They wanted her to drink 4l minimum per day. I'd never manage that!

Frabbits · 22/08/2023 14:04

Obviously there are few people where the body's systems break down but I'm sorry, the often quoted thing about needing 2/5/10 glasses of water a day and that everyone is going around in a state of dehydration without knowing it, is complete rubbish.

If you are thirsty, you need to drink. If your pee is not pale coloured, you need to drink.

That's it. Really.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 22/08/2023 14:14

Just on my second big glass of squash now after reading this earlier!

TheCountessofLocksley · 22/08/2023 14:52

The NHS advise about 1.2litres of fluid per day, which can be a combo of water, juice, tea, coffee, squash. Start the day with a glass of water before a tea or coffee - it's a small change (and you'll barely notice it) but starting to drink first thing and continuing steadily through the day is better than bingeing it all before bed etc.

A lot depends on your activity levels. If you're working out/running etc you'll need more water more frequently.

I appreciate you said you had a phobia around public toilets, but you will only pee more at first as you increase your intake. You might also find you suffer from water retention at first as well. This is temporary, again whilst your body adjusts. Lots of people panic and cut back on their water intake because of this, but it is worth riding the storm for all the benefits water brings.

BettySundaes · 22/08/2023 14:57

I almost never feel thirsty, so don't see the point/have the habit almost never drink water even when its hot. 3 cups of coffee a day and a glass of something alcoholic a few days a week. Unfortunately its the only thing I enjoy drinking in any kind of volume.

DeNeushoornHeeftEenHoorn · 22/08/2023 14:59

1 large coffee (cappuccino style) in the morning; 3-4 litres of water (usually sparkling) throughout the day; probably a couple of glasses of wine with supper!

So swings and roundabouts...

Cookerhood · 22/08/2023 15:20

3 or 4 cups of tea & a large coffee. Sometimes can of diet coke etc. Water if I'm exercising, but not loads. Squash with fizzy water if it's particularly warm. Very rarely a glass of iced water.
My pee is certainly the correct colour. You also get water in food, so a litre to drink is probably enough.

MWNA · 22/08/2023 17:52

500ml (flask) X 5 of decaf coffee made with half hot water and half oat milk.
No plain water - I hate it. No juice. No Coke etc.

bizzey · 22/08/2023 18:59

Benn following this thread as I had a question about water intake

An earlier poster mentioned something about 1 lt to 25kgs .

Is that correct?
I have a lowish BMI (/18)
.
I am aiming for 1.5 lts.
And I am doing.
But it is messing up with my hunger/food signals.

1.5 lts water
4-5 cups of normal tea .

bizzey · 22/08/2023 19:00

No interest in food if I have water ?

bizzey · 22/08/2023 19:00

I am full !!

5128gap · 22/08/2023 19:19

4 large strong coffees
5 or 6 pints of water

gogomoto · 22/08/2023 19:28

Not enough!
Herbal tea in the morning 500ml travel cup
Glass of water or coffee at work
Herbal tea when I get home mid afternoon, water or squash with meal (or alcoholic drink if weekend), water in evening if thirsty (we won't mention Fridays and Saturdays Grin)

mondaytosunday · 22/08/2023 19:29

Cup or two of tea, can of Diet Coke, about three large glasses of water (say over a litre). So I reckon a couple litres, maybe 2.5, in a day. I eat lots of salad too which provides water.

DungareesAndTrombones · 22/08/2023 19:35

Oh loads. 3 or 4 cups of tea if I'm working from home. A coffee if I go into the office. And at least 3 litres of water and I am always, always thirsty. I never used to drink water and wondered why I always felt like shite.
