To find this time of year really sad

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 08:54

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

Tomorrow I will do my last pedicure of the season - I don't bother when my feet aren't on display! So I quite like that. I am also finally getting the payrise I have been waiting for for two years in the autumn, another reason to be cheerful.

Where do those who think autumn weather has already started live? The forecast for this week here is low twenties with lots of sun and the possibility of a shower later in the week.

17 is very low 20s.

That’s Sunday, and therefore next week Grin

Some of you are so miserable.

Those mocking Hygge, should read up more about it. After all, the countries where this is part of their culture, rank highest in the global happiness Sydney’s, yet have the coldest, wettest, darkest winters.

Personally I’ll be loving Autumn and Winter. Watching movies and great TV, putting on the fire, dusting off my slow cooker, watching my dog sleep in front of the fire, cracking open the Baileys and pretending I’m in a semi hibernation until spring bursts open next year.

OMG, what boots am I going to treat myself to this year 🤔

PollyCreo · 20/08/2023 16:09

I'm sad because it's JUST starting to cool down where I live, recovered from the horrendous 40c July heatwaves but it's dark at 8pm now 😞 September and October are the best months here but they go too damn quickly and before we know it the clocks go back 😮‍💨

I'm lucky as we have more daylight during the winter months than the UK but I'm still not ready 😪

misssunshine4040 · 20/08/2023 16:10

I love a few weeks of summer but I adore Autumn and the nights closing in.
I love the colours and the whole feel of it and same with winter

NorthWestThree · 20/08/2023 16:11

I really struggle with September. I try and plan nice things ahead of time because otherwise I just feel sad. I hate it when the kids go back to school after I've had them home for such a lovely long time. I've always found September the hardest month

I tend to agree with you but the levels of suicide and alcoholism in Scandinavia rather tread on your point.

Friday is 10 - 18° and rainy!

My favourite. It's my birthday today. Then I count down to dark nights, autumn, flu jabs, christmas and lovely things.

10°C is the overnight low! I take your point that the temperature dips below 20° at the end of the week but high teens to low twenties is in line with the averages for August, in this part of the UK at least. It’s still very much typical summer weather, rain and all!

Flu jabs?

PinkRiceKrispies · 20/08/2023 17:59

I hate summer but this year, the constant rain has got me down. Even when we have had several nice days, it always ends up back raining. Can't win really. Last year was unbearably hot, this year, too wet.
I will miss days out at the beach and having an evening cold drink at the local outdoor cafe but I love autumn evenings too. Cooler but still light enough to enjoy the evening. My life doesn't really differ either. I don't go back to work or routine as it's the same all year round for me. My favourite time of year are the 'ber' months.

Excitingnewusername · 20/08/2023 18:04

I'm normally an autumn lover, but not looking forward to it this year. I'm really going to miss the light (not the heat, I'm one of those people whose body doesn't function in summer), it's back to stupidly long days at work (12 hours being normal) and weekends of working to try to keep up, and feeling exhausted.

I used to really look forward to Christmas but my family is, frankly, dying out increasingly quickly with no next generation and its not been the same since miscarrying on a locked down Christmas day.

I suspect I may just be fed up of everything at the moment, and now I've had my moan, will endeavour to look to the positives. In an ideal world I live in a lovely cosy watertight house, have a dog to take for long walks through the crunchy leaves, and my friends still live locally and fancy cosy gatherings in front of a fire in a local pub 😉

CardiganBardigan · 20/08/2023 18:43

The thing is, this happens every single year. So either make peace with it, or move somewhere equatorial (but it'll be dark early every day!) or be sad every year?

I honestly don't get the angst about the seasons. Each season is really cool in its own way. Spring is all new shoots and green things, summer is long holiday days and fun, autumn is amazing colours and starting to get snuggly, winter is Christmas and coziness.

Chipsahoy · 20/08/2023 19:25

It’s so sad that so many of us write off parts of the year each year. I get it. I have painful anniversaries in autumn and winter so I used to write off 6 months of the year. Embracing them in any way that I could, to make them mine helped a lot.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/08/2023 19:50

The early part of autumn can be beautiful and often better than the reality of summer (I love the dream of summer; shame about years like this one!)
November tends to be my hardest month with little to redeem it. December does have the distraction of Christmas. January is a shit pit, but I try to bludgeon through with a goal like Run Every Day January to give it some point in existing while the days slowly eek out the daylight until 5pm. February, and I'm concentrating on snowdrops and crocuses. It's the small details in nature that I try and focus on like the slowly swelling leaf buds.

I do find summer weather easier; slide sandals on and go. Not farting around with socks, lacing boots, finding matching pairs of gloves, balancing a coat for warmth vs a coat for waterproofing... multiply by the number of children involved... I like being consistently warm, not sweating in a jumper while feet freeze. Feeling guilt for putting the heating on vs choking the planet with a log burner. Solar panels cut the bills significantly.

It's the mud that gets intolerable in a British winter, and unlike frosts and snow, the mud is absolutely guarenteed.

Sending love, can't imagine how tough that was

It's not difficult. Some people struggle in the summer heat. Others don't cope well with the darkness of winter. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a recognised depressive condition. Some people have lost a loved one at a certain time of year or are reminded of some other personal tragedy. It must be lovely to find each and every season 'really cool', but hey, we're all different. Casually calling it angst strikes me as a little bit dismissive.

Herecomestreble1 · 20/08/2023 20:09

It's all relative! I feel like that when the clocks go forward and the warm nights roll in. I love Autumn.

Pickingmyselfup · 20/08/2023 20:25

I can't relate because I love Autumn! The leaves, the smell, the cooler days so I can dig out my boots.

That being said I do miss the summer, the light nights, the warmth..

I detest winter and I'm not a fan of spring either. I feel like spring is toying with me, looking all bright and warm outside but as soon as I go out I'm freezing. Winter I hate because its dark and cold.

Excitingnewusername · 20/08/2023 20:26

Thank you @HollyGolightly4 DH and I have resolved to try to reclaim happy Christmases this year.

Awittyfool · 20/08/2023 22:12

OMG, what boots am I going to treat myself to this year 🤔

No idea but chances are they will be the cost of three pairs of summer shoes and require regular scotch guard, cleaning and resoling to keep looking good.

I can go barefoot in summer ( sadly shakes the sand out of battered plimsolls)

Well jolly good for you. Obviously you have no unhappy associations or memories at certain times of the year.
Likewise the idiot above calling everyone who doesn't find Winter snuggly and wuggly 'miserable'.
