To find this time of year really sad

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

Normally I'm with you, but this summer has been so cool, grey and disappointing that I'm not actually feeling the same sadness as I usually do.

AuntieMarys · 20/08/2023 11:16

I love it!! I consider September to be the start of the year....its usually a lovely month and autumn is my favourite season.

Crunchymum · 20/08/2023 11:19

I always feel a little melancholy this time of year. Doesn't help that its the anniversary of my mum's death next month.

However I try to focus on the positives. My children are all thriving and they all love school so there'll be no issue with them going back.

I love the darker evenings and the feel of cosiness and need for hankering down they bring. I love autumn and the build up to Christmas. My DC1 and DP also have birthdays in autumn. It would be nice to have an Indian summer of course [we were on a UK beach last October half term and had amazing weather] but I'm also glad when the seasons change so I can pack up all the summer gear and get ready for colder weather.

I love all the seasons and am able to find positives in all of them.

mydogisthebest · 20/08/2023 11:32

I don't mind cold weather, it's the dark morning and evenings (well afternoons really) I hate.

This year is worse because we have had such shit weather. Hardly any sun and loads and loads of rain. Quite a few days in May, June and July were so chilly where I am in East Midlands were so chilly I thought about putting the heating on.

Yesterday Home Bargains had loads of Christmas stuff in!! For goodness sake it is August. Just makes me feel depressed

pinusscotus · 20/08/2023 11:35

I usually love the start of autumn but given the lack of 'proper' summer weather / summer activities over the past few months (except for that amazing 2 weeks in June), I'm now slightly dreading it. Those lovely sunny days at the start of the summer were supposed to be exactly that - the start!

I like this time of year: making the most of warm says and smelling the harvest. My garden is designed for late summer colour and at this time, I have the last flush of the bedding plants, late hydrangea, Hebe, dahlias, penstemon, daphne, hibiscus, to name a few.

The warm days and crisper nights are preferable to blazing June (have we all forgotten June) and July. I also like to watch the fattening plums, apples, pears, etc., and look forward to prepping them. Alongside the fruits, winter spuds, onions and beets.

The shops are summer tired now and the autumn collections are always refreshing and I look forward to the late September switch. Add in a switch to different, warming meals and away from barbecues and I like it.

I detest the obsession with Halloween and whilst I get through November and December with their darkndays, spurred on by twinkling lights and mulled wine, I struggle dreadfully with the dark misery of the first six weeks after Christmas meging into Lenten abstinence.

Hurrah for longer days and 5pm blue skies at the end of February.

February half terms marks a new beginning for me and I have always loved it.

What obsession is there of Halloween? Christmas yes, not much of one of Halloween ime, in England.

Pluffe · 20/08/2023 11:50

I love this time of year! Autumn is my favourite season, my dc both have autumn birthdays and there is Halloween and Christmas to look forward to!

I am in Ireland, so Halloween is definitely a thing here.

ToWhitToWhoo · 20/08/2023 11:57

Not really. What depresses me is snow, or rather ice, which makes paths and pavements slippery and dangerous for me, and is therefore the equivalent of lockdown for me. And the other thing that depresses me is my birthday and anything that reminds me of it. And neither occurs at this time of year.

zeibesaffron · 20/08/2023 12:01

I hear you - I love spring/ summer - DD hates school, and is back soon - I hate cold, short days, ice, snow all of it! All the bugs come out in winter when my DCs were young it was just a perpetual colds, temperatures, snotty noses - just miserable!

I love that! I prefer Halloween over Christmas and was a lovely thing growing up. I don’t see anything in most shops until September about Halloween specifically but Christmas I see things in July and it only gets worse as Christmas gets closer. I’d opt out of the ridiculous amounts of emails about Christmas if there was a choice. I have nothing against Christmas but hearing about it for almost six months is unnecessary for any holiday.

stargirl1701 · 20/08/2023 12:23

No, I try to live seasonally and 'celebrate' the best of each season.

I did feel like you, OP, when I was younger and trying to live a 'summer' life all year round.

bagforlifeamnesty · 20/08/2023 12:35

There are things to dislike about every season but as a pp said, they’re happening whether we like it or not, so best to make the most of each one and find things we like about them. Then the turning of the seasons is always nice because you can focus on the change and the things to look forward to.

I lived abroad pretty much bang on the equator for a few years and found the lack of seasons and change quite unnerving and kind of depressing. Our different seasons give a reference point to the natural rhythms of life and without them, time can just feel like one huge expanse. Moving back to the UK one of the main things I looked forward to was having different seasons.

Nevermind31 · 20/08/2023 12:42

Whilst summer is my favourite season I can’t wait for school to start, and the routine that comes with it. Always really tricky for us with childcare over the summer…
i love the idea of autumn walks on a crisp sunny morning…. I don’t like the constant rain…

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/08/2023 13:14

ATM I’d love some autumn weather - I’m in France and it’s absolutely stinking bloody hot. 😩

Peony654 · 20/08/2023 13:17

YABU. Some of us work all summer, not everyone gets “long carefree days”. Make changes to your life if needed, I find it weird peoples lives are dictated by seasons.

We certainly did not have an amazing 2 weeks in June.

ssd · 20/08/2023 13:45

We did. Scotland was lovely in June.

LuciferRising · 20/08/2023 13:51

I think we're relatively lucky in the UK - there is flooding - but besides that we do not get the severe weather other countries get. I can't imagine, year after year, getting angsty over the changing of the seasons - every single year. Seems like madness to me. You can't change it. But you can change how you respond to the seasons.

I appreciated things more when I started working with the weather, rather than against it. I like pagan festivals. I like decorating the house for each season - nothing crazy or plastic, but with stuff from outside and plants. I have a SAD light in my office for the darker days - because I do get tired.

WizardinTraining · 20/08/2023 14:30

Not sure what these long carefree days are - everyone I know works pretty much as normal over the summer unless they take some annual leave and go away.

I do love the feel of September but I'd like a bit more summer this year and like others I detest how Xmas starts earlier and earlier.

ladeluge · 20/08/2023 14:49

Autumn means Christmas is on the way, and it is such a marmite thing. I don't particularly like it but I go with the flow.

As others have said, no sooner have we drawn a breath, got the kids back to school, got the Winter woolies/jackets sorted etc., then WHAM Christmas is on the horizon. It will not be safe to go into a shop very soon!

I really dislike the endless run up to Christmas. By the time it actually comes around it is just one day, a fancy roast, a few drinks, pressies opened, then it's all over. That 24 hours sure involves a huge unnecessary rehearsal, and it can bring me down a bit TBH. Pressure to perform (not that I buy into all that), endless ads, the perfect family, on and on. For a 24 hour gig.

That's why I like January, ok I'm odd. But there is nothing to "perform" or shop for in January. No expectations, not much going on. Then at the end of that month, the nights stretch and we are off!

ThanksItHasPockets · 20/08/2023 14:54

Where do those who think autumn weather has already started live? The forecast for this week here is low twenties with lots of sun and the possibility of a shower later in the week.

To find this time of year really sad
NotTerfNorCis · 20/08/2023 14:57

I like the melancholy feeling at the start of September. Days are colder and darker, it's 'back to school', but it's also a time of new beginnings and beautiful autumn colours.

tonystarksrighthand · 20/08/2023 15:02

I feel like this. I like the long carefree days

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/08/2023 15:08

I love autumn, the kids are settled back into school, the weather here is usually nicer in September than July/august, we have a blast of sunshine to look forward to in the October break and I like the run up to Christmas. Summer generally feel a bit of an anti climax, especially with the weather this year.
