To find this time of year really sad

Beverlysparty · 20/08/2023 08:54

The schools will be re opening soon, the mornings already have that cool damp feel, it's dark at about 8.30, there's Halloween stuff in Tesco and winter clothes starting to appear in shops.
AIBU to feel really miserable at this time of year? I just hate the end of the long, carefree days and the return to bloody boring routine.

Well jolly good for you. Obviously you have no unhappy associations or memories at certain times of the year.
Likewise the idiot above calling everyone who doesn't find Winter snuggly and wuggly 'miserable'

Not that this is misery top trumps but my mum died very suddenly and in a horrible way in the middle of summer, so I'm not particularly crazy about that time of year but I can't live the rest of my life dreading it or feeling sad about it every time it comes around. I've just learnt to cope with it and I try and see some good things about it so that I can reframe the bad association.

I'm sorry about that. My mother died in Summer as well, but it's Christmas I find hardest without her and dad. It's just important to realise that different times of year can be difficult for people for very different reasons. We all try to find ways of coping with it, but some people really struggle at certain times of the year, for many reasons, and that needs to be accepted and respected.

Some of you are so miserable.

Those mocking Hygge, should read up more about it. After all, the countries where this is part of their culture, rank highest in the global happiness Sydney’s, yet have the coldest, wettest, darkest winters.

Personally I’ll be loving Autumn and Winter. Watching movies and great TV, putting on the fire, dusting off my slow cooker, watching my dog sleep in front of the fire, cracking open the Baileys and pretending I’m in a semi hibernation until spring bursts open next year.

OMG, what boots am I going to treat myself to this year 🤔

That’s all very well and good if you can afford it. In the mean time some of us are thinking OMG how am I going to afford new school shoes? Will my boots last another winter? At least they’ll hide the holes in my socks.

Palacelife · 21/08/2023 18:43

I love this time of year! I love the fresh feel in the mornings. I always feel that September is a time of new starts. I like autumn, it’s beautiful and I love the build up to Christmas

JoeyRamonesHair · 21/08/2023 18:50

This whole summer has been humid, sweaty and vile. I am desperate for a cold night under a duvet (as opposed to waking boiling at 5am every day as even a sheet is too much) and some cool crisp mornings.

LaDamaDeElche · 21/08/2023 18:51

I love the autumn and the winter, so never feel like that. It’s the period after the Christmas break that makes me feel shitty.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/08/2023 18:52

I always have these couple of weeks off work (the end of August) so no, I don’t find these two weeks sad!

Also, I enjoy the thought of autumn coming - autumn has so many fun things like Halloween, bonfire night, Strictly on the telly, Christmas on the horizon, cold crisp days coming up. Amazing.

Yes I don’t like that either. Although having DS’s birthday at the end of Feb has helped

SandandSky · 21/08/2023 18:55

I get it BUT September-November is my favourite time of year.

Beautiful autumn colours
Pumpkin Spice/ Hot chocolate
Crisp mornings
Bonfire night
Autumn fashion (I bloody love a jacket/Knitted hat AND you can hide your extra rolls you didn’t want to get out in summer 😂)
SOUP!
Halloween

I could Go on…

DH is much more of a summer person though, guess we are all different - hope you don’t find it too bad 💐

fuzzywuzzywombat · 21/08/2023 18:58

I saw Easter egg nest buns in Morrisons this weekend.
(Wtf)*
So at least we have that to look forward to!

Strictly!!!!

"I would be sad but this summer has been shit. We might as well just get on with autumn now."

I feel like this. Normally I love summer but this year, by now I feel - right summer you had your chance and you ballsed it up, now feck off and let autumn have a go.
No doubt in the depths of November I'll be whinging again though.

I love Autumn and adore Winter, I am literally counting the days until the clocks go back. I get an enormous feeling of content. I loathe the summer and get really down so I think I have the opposite of what normal people would call SAD. People get really annoyed if I mention it though I have noticed. I hate Summer but would never shit on someone else for loving it. I know I am in the minority and I accept and understand that but saying you love Winter and the dark nights is like a red rag to a bull to some people.

Autumn is the best season. Summer can suck it.

Agree

Royaly82 · 21/08/2023 19:18

Oh no not me I really dislike summer, the heat, bright sun, its muggy, the sweat, my asthma plays up. Awful. I LOVE autumn and winter, the long cozy nights with hot chocolate wrapped in blankets by the fire, halloween, fireworks night, Christmas, beautiful colours ever where, frosty mornings , snow and comfy clothes. I can't wait!!!!

LuckySantangelo35 · 21/08/2023 19:22

I genuinely cannot see how anyone could love dark nights and the cold. It’s miserable and oppressive

MintJulia · 21/08/2023 19:23

I love this time of year. I'm sad that summer is passing but this week I've picked wild damsons and made jam, bottled blackberries for ds to eat with pancakes through the winter, I've picked a big basket full of hazel nuts that I'll toast and preserve in honey.

My greenhouse is full of chillis and tomatoes, french beans and salad. There are greengages and sloes and haws still to come. In six weeks time my larder will be full of jams and preserves, sweet chiili sauce and home made ketchup. My freezer will be full of veg.

It always feels nice having a stash of lovely food ready for when there's nothing in the garden. 😊

SandandSky · 21/08/2023 19:24

I always think “this is nice maybe I’m a summer person” and the autumn rolls round and I think the same. And then with winter, and then spring…. I think I just enjoy a change 😂😂

indyocean · 21/08/2023 19:41

Blimey

cup half empty

Ilovecleaning · 21/08/2023 19:41

It’s just life: the passing of time, the ups and downs, the changing seasons… Don’t be depressed. Try to see the positives. 🌺

FlipFlop1987 · 21/08/2023 19:57

I fell pregnant start of January and was really nauseous throughout all of the end of last Winter and what little Spring we had. Then the tiny Summer got we had no garden to sit in due to groundswork for over a year and I haven’t been able to enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine on a warm balmy evening after work. That was my little treat thing that was my favourite part of the year, coming home from work, feeling like there’s still half the day left.
Now we’re heading back into Autumn and still pregnant 😩 by the time baby arrives it will be full on Halloween and Christmas again. It’s never ending!
We have all been cheated this year, abysmal weather and it’s what us Brits need to power us through 8 months of dark, wet, windy days.

I honestly cannot get how anyone likes it still being bright at 10pm. I HATE that. In saying that there are more people like you than there are like me in fairness :)

You’re being ridiculous. What long care free days? It’s only mid august really! Schools only break up in July in England.

agent765 · 21/08/2023 20:27

I start to get depressed after the longest day.

By August the 1st the vibrant greens have gone from nature and the garden starts to get autumnal.

I suffer from Raynaud's and other circulatory conditions so I'm always cold. Despite multiple layers starting to go on as the cold progresses, I can't prevent the symptoms from getting worse.

I have heated throws, heated socks, a heated waistcoat and lots of other stuff to stop me freezing to a standstill but it's still physically painful. No matter how much I move I cannot warm myself. I always have to have an external source of heat to warm up.

Moving my feet when they're cold always makes me feel like the bad Terminator in Terminator 2 when he gets caught in the liquid nitrogen spill. He goes to lift his feet and they snap off.

Summer's short for me. I start losing layers and feeling better at the beginning of May.

Like so many others I'm dreading winter again this year as heating is so expensive.

ChristmasCwtch · 21/08/2023 20:28

I love autumn. Excited for first log fire 😆
