To have no time for ‘anti-human’ people?

Myfavouritepenguin · 18/08/2023 13:09

I’ve seen it quite a lot recently- mostly on here rather than in real life admittedly. I’m referring to both the ‘I don’t like children people; I much prefer animals’ contingent as well as the ‘wouldn’t it be better if humans just died out’ approach.

I’ve been trying to pinpoint what it is that irks me, and I think it’s that this attitude seems like a slightly different version of “I’m not like other girls.” - an attempt to separate and elevate and basically look down on everyone else in your category.

The thing is, we are all human. Unless you are literally living off grid with wolves or whatever, you have not opted out of humanity. Whatever makes a human, that is what you are, and you are to some degree or other not only invested in but contributing to the whole operation, children and climate change included.

The answer to humanity’s ills and issues is not to reject everyone else who somehow isn’t as special and above humanity as these people seem to imagine they are!

I prefer animals to kids and people but some people I like I know I'm a human being but sometimes I really do find it hard to be part of the human race . I am a massive introvert so i create my life around what I can cope with. I do have 2 daughters but I convinced myself that a life with children was a wonderful thing to do as a women I now believe I was wrong. I enjoyed bringing my daughters up as did my DD we raised them to be honest ,kind & well rounded , unfortunately society and influences from other people affected them and their attitudes.one DD has a child and the other DD wouldn't go near a child if you paid her. I absolutely agree with the saying that
"just because they are your family doesn't mean you have to like them" I spend very little time with my DDs because to be honest at times I find them fucking loathsome and I believe I wasted that part of my life . I now spend lot of time on my own I don't really affect anyone's life and they don't affect my life and my dog spends all her time with me because she absolutely hates other dogs !.

To be fair OP your writing style is really not the easiest to understand. We’re 5 pages in and I think it boils down to “I think people who say they don’t like humans are childish liars”. Am I even close?

Myfavouritepenguin · 18/08/2023 15:17

Ye gods!!

I referred to ‘people’ who say they don’t like children. ‘People’, not women.

I used the ‘not like other girls’ trope to illustrate a point. The fact that the ‘not like other girls’ is misogynistic is both true irrelevant here.

Seriously, I’m happy to have a debate but I wish people would read the actual posts. I’ve already clarified several times.

Did you really think I was saying ‘women who don’t like children are claiming to be not like other girls’?? That’s what you got from my OP?

You said people then called them girls

I hadnt realised you thought everyone could be girls

Yes that's what I, and by the looks of things others, got from it

Indeed @fitzwilliamdarcy , I am really struggling to understand what the question is here. But it’s fascinating to see the different responses to the OP.

Curious to learn if you nailed it.

This was also my first thought.

Nope. You are going to have to explain that leap to me

With respect, I don’t think my style is particularly hard to decipher, though I did make one error in my OP. I hardly think that renders it incomprehensible, but perhaps you can specify?

This is the bulk of what I said, with the mistake in bold:

“I’ve seen it quite a lot recently- mostly on here rather than in real life admittedly. I’m referring to both the ‘I don’t like children people; I much prefer animals’ contingent as well as the ‘wouldn’t it be better if humans just died out’ approach.

Clearly there should have been a slash between the words ‘people’ and ‘children’.

Aside from that, can you point out anything that is ambiguous or baffling about that?

So many people have not understood the second paragraph though, so perhaps you’re right 🤷‍♀️I used the phrase ‘different version’ of “I’m not like other girls” but some people couldn’t see that I was using it as an analogy for when people try to raise themselves out of and above their peers.

I think you do understand exactly what I’m saying, for what it’s worth, @fitzwilliamdarcy - but you don’t like my opinion.

I couldn’t agree less! People have children because of biology pure and simple. The inherent biological drive to procreate. Remove all hormones and people would not have them, it’s a terrible idea on paper! All species have “children”. Eating and reproducing are the top things that all animals do, both driven by biology.

The biological drive is to have sex. When animals shag they're not planning a pregnancy.

Nor do they experience a conscious desire to produce offspring. That desire is down to social conditioning.

I know you think you’re being clever, but I really, really haven’t contradicted myself in my OP - but I did miss out a forward slash, as I’ve just explained.

I referred to people saying they disliked children. Yes.

I then compared that with the ‘not like other girls’ trope that, yes, is misogynistic (in case you were going to flip out about that) as a way to illustrate why it is irritating.

If you’re irritated by the ‘not like other girls’ line, then you’re along the right lines…

The fact that people submit to their drive to procreate doesn't make it not selfish. That drive makes you want to have children. Therefore having children is doing what you want, which is inherently selfish. It's not as if humans have no choice about fulfilling the urge.

I'm not remotely anti-human and I have 2 children and have worked with thousands of them btw. I'm just saying there is nothing remotely altruistic about having children!

Yes I agree having children is not altruistic! But we do have them to further the species. That’s just not a conscious objective. Biology tricks us into it.

I think over most of the history of humanity it has not been a choice though, no.

If you say people who don't like children aren't like other girls poster are going to think people = women

You are incredibly rude to the posters who have "misunderstood" you though so I think you are getting what you want

This is strangely soon after the thread on the childfree board being incoherently rude about people who are childfree wanting an end to the human race

The biological drive is to have sex. When animals shag they're not planning a pregnancy.

What do you imagine the is the function of biological desire to have sex?

No, they’re not planning a pregnancy. Oak trees don’t plan a baby when they produce acorns. The purpose is the same, propagation of the species.

Fair enough. But my OP isn’t particularly confusing if you read it properly (typo excepted). I don’t want to be a dick about it (well, not too much of a dick), but my writing style has served me well enough through my literature-based post-graduate qualifications, so I’m not going to take your inability to understand it too much to heart.

What??

Ok. I think you’re saying that people not liking children and me not liking it when people say they dislike children is basically the same. You’re essentially saying I’m a hypocrite?

I suppose to understand my point you’ve got to see that I equate a professed dislike of children as basically the same as the aforementioned rejection of humanity as a whole.

So I see the two things that you think are the same as being actually very different.

That is, not liking it when people proudly proclaim they hate humans/children is me judging people on their behaviour/obnoxious beliefs.

However, not liking children is just not liking small humans because they’re small humans - and there’s not really anything they can do about that!

Lots of people have got very upset about the children element of my OP. It’s as if people don’t really get that children are people. They’re not all the same. Saying you hate the lot of them is frankly bizarre and offensive. No one cared to tackle my question about how it would sound if you proclaimed to hate all women… but it’s the same sort of thing!

I do understand what you mean by this: "I’ve been trying to pinpoint what it is that irks me, and I think it’s that this attitude seems like a slightly different version of “I’m not like other girls.” - an attempt to separate and elevate and basically look down on everyone else in your category." You've worded it in a confusing way but what you're saying is that people who say both of those things say them to appear superior, edgy, cool, different.

I just think you're wrong. People who say they don't like children are not trying to elevate themselves or look down on people who do like them. They are telling you that they don't like spending time with children. I know lots of people who have this attitude. They don't mean every single child on the planet. They mean in general, as a category, they prefer to avoid it. Here is why it's a bad analogy: women who say "I'm not like other women" think that being "like other women" is bad. People who say "I don't like children" don't have any opinion on people who do.

Incidentally, I know a guy who says that children don't like him. I wonder if he's trying to elevate himself, or the children in this scenario. Cats love him, mind.

I don’t like people - they stress me out and I always worry I’ve said the wrong thing about them. I’m in the process of having an autism assessment and my ds who’s autistic thinks the same. Some people are just introverts who don’t like people, we know we are human it’s just we don’t want to talk to them!

Here we go again. You’re talking about misanthropes, not introverts.
