To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

My brand new Bosch has a 3 and half hour cotton wash but I wouldn't use it except in certain circumstances.
The 40 degree mixed wash option which is 1hr is the main one surely - works fine for us, if it's a particularly lightly soiled load I'll even turn the temp down to 20 and that works fine too and is slightly shorter.

Furryrug · 18/08/2023 20:09

I've avoided the cycles that take hours as I thought they'd use more energy 🤦‍♀️ I have been enlightened 🤣

These so-called eco friendly cycles end up pushing people into using less environmentally friendly quick washes.

I miss my machine from the early 2000s that took about an hour or ninety minutes for a full cycle.

Yes, and they washed better imo too. Not economical if you have to wash it 3 times.

Our holiday let had this ridiculous time. I'm a speed/economy button pusher. 1h washes here and we're all still alive and pur clothes are clean.

FlipFlop1987 · 18/08/2023 21:20

Does it have a ‘flexi’ button or something similar. Our new house had an in built AEG but no quick wash function. It did have a 20 minute cycle but only for 2kg of clothes. A standard mixed cycle was nearly 2 hours. Then I found the ‘flextime’ button, press it once and it kncks 20 minutes off, press it twice and it does it again taking it down to about an hour which is just about right for an 8kg load to get a decent wash, especially grubby nursery clothes

anon666 · 18/08/2023 21:27

Its the washer dryers. They have ridiculously long cycles.

Never again. It's the first thing I check when I buy a new machine

I have a Bosch washing machine which you can use an app with, I've never done it but do know there are additional cycles available to the standard ones on the machine - perhaps yours is the same?

Turquoise123 · 18/08/2023 22:23

Paid loads for a Bosch. Takes hours and hours AND it does not clean things . My old Miele produce pristine clean clothes in the 23 mins quick wash . Now I have to hand wash AFTER they have been in a wash cycle. Words fail me .

mylifestory · 18/08/2023 22:25

Bosch series 4 here. Has a speed button, can do quick wash in 15 mins. My go to is mixed load at 45 mins on speed. Cottons on 70C for dishcloths etc, full load 90 mins. Max is 3hrs on slow I think for anything. It's so quiet I don't think I cd have any other make ever again

Glittertwins · 18/08/2023 22:33

We always use daily wash setting on our Samsung and only change the temperature. The number or rinses does change the length of cycle time, we generally keep it at 1 or 2 if it's a bigger load but it's usually done within 1:15

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 18/08/2023 22:43

PickAChew · 17/08/2023 21:34

My biggest beef with longer cycles is that stuff often comes out smelling like it's been sitting in stale water, even though I keep my machine pretty clean inside. I usually hit speed perfect or use the mixed fabric cycle.

Wondering if anyone else had said this. Our 5hours+ eco setting, which washes at 60c, regularly comes out smelling of farts.

I regularly use soda crystals, Oust for limescale and clean the filter, so this really confuses me.

I did not know you could turn the tune off 😬

It doesn’t have a second cotton setting.

I can’t tell you the model number because it’s sort of minimalist looking with absolutely no writing on the front!!
It has a digital screen and the only text I can see on the actual machine is ‘SmartThing’ so I’m guessing you can connect it to your phone etc etc. Because obviously that’s what we are all desperate to do!!! Do the designers at Samsung really think we’d rather that than just a decent, short wash?!

From what I can tell, after googling Samsung smart things is that you’re supposed to download the app and you can choose which wash cycle to use on there. Maybe you have a greater variety of wash cycles to choose from on the app then what is available on the actual machine?

Not gonna lie, I'd have turned the washing machine off and emptied all the water out after an hour and a half tops! I don't do any more than 20 to 30 minute washes for anything. I just do a very hot one and a half hour wash once a month just to get rid of all the bacteria.

There's not much you need to put on for a long wash really. The almost 6 hour wash is insane. Imagine all the electricity and the water it's used! Good grief. Surely you know it isn't a normal amount of time @babyproblems Do you even need to ask?!

NeedTheSeaside · 18/08/2023 22:53

PinkiOcelot · 17/08/2023 12:04

Mine too. I don’t want one that takes all day to do a wash. I’ll be stating short washes when I’m buying my next machine.

How the hell can over 5 hours be economical?

@PinkiOcelot because for the vast majority of the time it's doing absolutely nothing, the clothes are just soaking them it flips them around and they soak again. It's incredibly energy efficient, but....🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

Yes, that's why we ditched our 4 hr 30 min eco cycle after a couple of uses; the washing smelled musty no matter if we took it out straight after it finished.

aloris · 19/08/2023 00:13

I figured out eco functions, for any appliance, mean they don't really work. The dishes don't come out clean, the clothes don't come out clean. The cycles take forever. The LED lights dont actually last all that long, but you still have to pay WAY more for them than the old kind. My power bills keep going up, never down.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/08/2023 00:18

I have an all singing all dancing Miele machine with a million wash options, I only use two- 1hr 15 and 20 mins. That's it.

It will be more energy and water efficient than your quick wash approach.

Our Bosch WM shows the water and electricity usage on each cycle. The 3.5 eco wash is most efficient. The shortest cycle is 15 minutes (30 degrees) and gets used for swimmers etc so it’s pretty flexible.

PandaExpress · 19/08/2023 02:01

These long cycles are a piss take! I got a new Indesit machine a couple of months ago, just the latest model of the same model I've always had. The wash times have all doubled! The only solution is to load it up the night before and set the timer for early morning. It's driving me mad!

I have an LG. I don't know if yours will have this but mine, when you connect it to a smartphone, has the ability to download additional cycles.

I can download things like Quick Wash (20 mins) to the "Download Cycle" slot. It takes seconds and it can be changed whenever you want by downloading a different one.

I am one of those sad people that do a lot of research and read reviews extensively along with comparing all models and features before I buy… white foods can be a total PITA to find the right ones so it is worth doing this, especially with washing machines. I have discovered that just because something is the ‘latest model’ doesn’t make it great… I urge everyone to be as sad as me!!! 😂
