To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

My gripe is that machines no longer have hot AND cold fill. Meaning my tankful of solar heated water is redundant. But I do almost always only wash when the sun is shining. Again, a short cycle 40mins doesn't impact the meter as uses solar..

CoffeeWithCheese · 17/08/2023 13:56

My quick wash is really quick - but the spin effort on it is none existent so it takes flipping forever to dry on the line from sopping wet. Cottons and "whites" (it's not a machine I would have picked - it came fitted and only has a few different options for cycles) take forever.

90% of stuff gets bunged through on "sports wear" which seems to run at a sensible but not stupid temperature, spin it enough that things have a decent chance of drying on the line and gets it clean. The names of the cycles lied to me.

Also - joining in with everyone else who loves the song. Makes me smile about laundry.

Can you not do a faster spin cycle after the wash finishes to get most of the water out?

If the house is going to catch fire, I think I would prefer it to happen when I'm out.

DysonSpheres · 17/08/2023 14:04

I have a machine with stupid settings as well. Would never have bought, had I realised the timings were so awful.

I have a 45min cotton COLD wash. You cannot set a higher temperature. And a 20 min 'eco wash 30° 🙄 Unless it's one item I'm washing I can't trust it will clean anything. My 'mixed wash' is 2 + hours. That's the third fastest wash. Add an extra rinse and you have time for a wedding and a funereal. You can press a time saver button that saves a whole massive .....15mins! off this wash. But this doesn't work on all washes. Even with delicates the wash is 20° max and it's nearly two hours. No time saver permitted.

Other washes are between 2 and nearly 3 1/2 hours.

I REALLY miss my old Ariston. 1 hour wash up to 60°. Express 30 min wash. Used to really sud up well. I hate this one. I have insurance on it and having been waiting for it to break down but 8 years and the buggar is going strong, not one issue!

Apparently this is because machines now use so little water that it would have filled up just from the cold water standing in the pipework, meaning that warm water in the tank would now become the water standing in the pipework and would just go cold, wasting more energy!

I am dreading having to get a new machine as my old one offers 30 and 44 quick wash options.

My Bosch is three years old and has a one hour 40C cycle. I use this a LOT.

VisionsOfSplendour · 17/08/2023 13:55

From what I read on here most of the mn posters wrork fom home so I'm surprised that the time of the cycle is an issue

The message that longer washes save both electricity and water is really slow to get I to the public consciousness. I think of it like the petrol in your car, you can overrev and drive with your foot flat to the floor to get somewhere quicker but driving at a steady 55moh has the same result, takes a bit more time but saves money on petrol

The principle of the fast wash is the same

But a longer wash wouldn’t get the washing out on the line - thats so much better for the environment. I dont think most people WFH anymore, thats definately not the situation with my group of friends (nurses, teachers etc). People need a machine that washes quickly in the morning. Ive only occasionally used my tumble dryer since spring (rainy weeks).

Electrical fires are not the only risk. I have lots count of the amount of times over the years the machine has started making a weird noise and I have had to go to turn it off. The majority of the time it's something stuck in the filter which needs removed but once the machine was off balance and started moving across the room. I I hadn't got there quickly (I was in the next room) it would have ripped the water pipes off and plug from the wall causing god knows what damage.

I'm always surprised when people give risk of electrical fire as the only reason not to run a machine unattended, then I wonder if I'm the only one every to have experienced anything else.

I said in my original post about our last machine leaking as well as overheating dramatically - you hear of kitchens flooding so thank goodness I was there when it all went wrong.

In response to StarlightLady, personally I’d rather be there to turn it off/ call the fire brigade if necessary to save my house, but if you’d rather be out it’s up to you 🤷‍♀️ As long as people know there’s a risk.

It's not a con.
Longer washes rely on soaking and shorter ones don't
Imagine lying in a bath for 5hrs vs showering with a power shower for 1hr

I wash everything at the 30 mins cycle - but I put it on pause for about 10 mins after the soap powder has gone in to give it a bit of a soak. I also put a tiny bit of fairly liquid on stains (usually fake tan/make up but the odd bit of pasta sauce) and find everything comes out great even at 30mins cool wash.

Flossieflamingo · 17/08/2023 14:20

My Samsung has a daily wash that takes an hour.

Anyonebut · 17/08/2023 14:32

The longer cycles are not necessarily more eco-friendly, as it was explained to me, up until recently, the “eco friendly” credentials only took into account use of electricity per hour, hence the super long cycles that may or may not use less electricity, depending on several factors.

Moveoverdarlin · 17/08/2023 14:36

The hat would drive me nuts. I literally wash everything on a quick wash which is an hour. When I try the longer washes if I have something that is particularly stained, they don’t get the marks out any better than the quick wash does, so I don’t see the point.

Icycloud · 17/08/2023 14:43

you clearly don’t know how to work the machine. Watch a video before you blame it

WishIwasElsa · 17/08/2023 14:48

I got a washing machine less than a year ago has several short programmes and a rapid wash button that cuts time off others too. Can do a 90 wash in just over 2 hours. Just look at the specifics when you buy another.

LadyDanburysHat · 17/08/2023 14:51

madeinmanc · 17/08/2023 11:57

These so-called eco friendly cycles end up pushing people into using less environmentally friendly quick washes.

I miss my machine from the early 2000s that took about an hour or ninety minutes for a full cycle.

This is so true. Most of the washes on my machine are 3hrs+. I use the 1hr quick wash as standard. I don't have time to wait that long for washing to finish.

I don't mind it with the dishwasher as it is put on in the evening and emptied in the morning.

PoshPineapple · 17/08/2023 14:56

We've just had our trusty Bosch replaced after 18 years faultless service. The new one (Bosch again), is a 9kg capacity and has a "speed perfect" button which reduces the wash time of all cycles substantially. The load I generally use all the time is an "easycare" or mixed load programme, 40 degrees and 45 minutes. Oh - and it was nowhere near £750 either!

babyproblems · 17/08/2023 15:03

Wow I was not expecting this to be a hot topic 😂

To answer a few Q’s; yes I have read the manual; and no I don’t think it is faulty! It doesn’t have any way of adjusting the time; it calculates it automatically by the weight of the load but seems to me anything over about 2KG and the time is ridiculous.

It never even occurred to me that this could be ‘eco friendly’!!! I wouldn’t associate such a long wash time with being good for the environment but maybe it is..!

The song is annoying imo.. I don’t think I’ll be buying a Samsung again! I bought this machine to replace a hotpoint that was faulty but I don’t love this one anymore than the last one!!

What I wonder is who is designing these white goods??? I’d love to have a chat with them. I work in a design related field and I don’t see any demand for many of the features they are adding and I would say that this machine doesn’t meet my families needs very well or meet my expectations for the price point & brand… my mum has an old Samsung that is wonderful - lots of short settings and good temperature adjustments; this is nowhere near that.

I think I might sell it and try something else! Glad to see all your posts in solidarity and suggestions!!!

Jumbojade · 17/08/2023 15:21

I’ve got the Samsung eco bubble add wash 9kg, had it for about 4/5 years. The eco cotton wash takes 4hr 39mins, but I never use it, as I use the other cotton wash at 60/90 degrees (depending on what I’m washing) and it takes 2hr 29mins. It also has the Daily wash (that another poster mentioned), which takes just over an hour.I love my machine, especially having the add wash, in case I find something I forgot to put in plus it’s also big enough to wash a duvet in. Does yours not have a 2nd cotton wash @babyproblems ?

Oigetoffmylawn · 17/08/2023 15:30

What model is it? I'm in the market for a new washer dryer and want to avoid!

Ah, that brings back memories of my girls school 40 years ago, we used to sing it in our music lessons , complete with actions! 😅
