To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

I did not know you could turn the tune off 😬

It doesn’t have a second cotton setting.

I can’t tell you the model number because it’s sort of minimalist looking with absolutely no writing on the front!!
It has a digital screen and the only text I can see on the actual machine is ‘SmartThing’ so I’m guessing you can connect it to your phone etc etc. Because obviously that’s what we are all desperate to do!!! Do the designers at Samsung really think we’d rather that than just a decent, short wash?!

Both.

Surely you can get on with other things whilst the machine is running?

Not if I've got a few loads to get finished.

dementedpixie · 17/08/2023 17:40

@babyproblems if you open the door is there a sticker on the machine itself with the model number?

@babyproblems - Samsung are a South Korean company.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 17/08/2023 19:38

Samsung is South Korean! It’s got a really Korean name. Think syllable one sound. It’s sam sung if you split it.

LuvSmallDogs · 17/08/2023 19:42

The quickest wash on my machine is a 30 minute cold wash, the next quickest is a 1.40 40 degree synthetics wash. It's a POS, I want my old machine back that had a 60 minute cycle you could adjust the temperature from cold up to 60 degrees!

Flossieflamingo · 17/08/2023 14:20

My Samsung has a daily wash that takes an hour.

Likewise - and if you set it to one rinse, it will do it in 51 mins. I wonder if the rinses are programmed at four for the cycle to be so long?

dementedpixie · 17/08/2023 20:17

I usually set mine to 4 rinses and it makes the daily wash 1h 24m.

Flossieflamingo · 17/08/2023 20:53

I’ve never paid any attention to the rinse button before 😂 Good to know!
Have had a look and the cotton cycle is 4h36m with 5 rinses!

Rachael2023 · 17/08/2023 20:55

I've got a Samsung ecobubble 8kg.

A daily wash is 1hr 5 mins but when you look on the manual that's only for about 4-5kg. So I only do that for a half-load of washing.

I tend to use the normal cotton wash for a full load and if often takes 1.5-2hrs depending on weight. But a full load can be also be over 3hrs sometimes which is annoying.

I've never used the eco setting because (along with my dishwasher) the instruction manual states that it only saves on water use, not electricity. Not so interested in saving a few litres of water - I can do that by having a quicker shower or a shallower bath.

I can't run mine overnight because of fire safety and because my neighbours would hear it. So that leaves me no time for daytime drying and hanging around waiting.

See, I always wonder about the fire aspect, with long cycles. You are not supposed to run machines overnight or when you're out, because of the fire risk, but washing machine and dishwasher cycles are getting longer and longer. It makes the advice totally impractical. The same for cheaper electricity at night - no point if you are not suppose to use it.

I ignore this advice, mind you. The part about not leaving the house while a machine is running seems particularly weird, because if my house is going to burn down, I'd rather not be in it, thank you very much.

A 15 minute wash is the equivalent of rinsing something through in lukewarm water.

That's pretty much how I use it. Stuff that's heavily soiled and needs a decent pre-wash before going in with other things and I find it good for swimwear or new things that have obvious treatments to wash out of them.

PickAChew · 17/08/2023 21:34

My biggest beef with longer cycles is that stuff often comes out smelling like it's been sitting in stale water, even though I keep my machine pretty clean inside. I usually hit speed perfect or use the mixed fabric cycle.

jannier · 17/08/2023 21:38

Hot cotton wash just under 2 hours rarely use it most goes in mixed coloured 1 hour 40 if really dirty....husband gets covered in mud and grinding shit....or a 15 minute for my stuff ....Hotpoint

Threenow · 17/08/2023 21:39

Good grief! Thank goodness I have a good old top loader, where everything is done and dusted in under an hour!

CakAndMoreCake · 17/08/2023 21:40

I always use delay start and wash ready for when I wake up

Exactly, this is why I stated earlier this thread that we don't use the 4 hr 30 min eco cycle on our machine, as the couple of times we tried it the washing came out musty. It may not happen to everyone, it may be to do with the mains water in a particular area, I don't know, but either way the eco cycle doesn't work for us.

Yes, our eco cycle is 4:30 too and stuff smells of not immediately taken out. It just smells damp a lot of the time even if take out the second it finishes

zingally · 18/08/2023 11:49

I do all my washes on the "mixed fabrics" setting, which is 1:50 at 40C. The clothes come out fine. I do usually give them a 12 min blast on a spin and drain cycle as well, which helps them get a good head start on drying. That's because we don't have a garden to dry them out in!
5 hours + is a bit bonkers! Not so bad if your machine is out in a utility room with a door to close, but if it was rumbling away all morning in my kitchen... I can see that would be annoying.

pollymere · 18/08/2023 19:11

I wash on woollens with a 1200 spin. It takes less than an hour or about that. Are you sure it's not accidentally set to soak first? Mine has a soak button that would take a wash to as long as yours. My cottons one is about two hours I think without soak.

dementedpixie · 18/08/2023 19:14

A woollens wash would usually be limited to a couple of kg so wouldn't be for a full load. It would use hardly any water and likely not enough for a big load.

frankiefirstyear · 18/08/2023 19:44

Abergale · 17/08/2023 12:03

Does it actually run that long? Mine weighs it and then cuts time according to weight. Before I click go the time shows up at 3:45 but it drops an hour nearly straight away

Is yours an LG? Mine says 3.45 sometimes and I just can't let it go for that long so I always cancel it and use the quick cycle. Would let it run though if I thought it'd recalculate.

VibrantGreen · 18/08/2023 19:45

I LOVE my new washing machine for the very reason I can ‘tweak’ the timings and reduce the cycle length if I want to.

It also has a 20 minute cycle but it does advise that this is for lightly soiled clothes.
