To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

I have an LG. I don't know if yours will have this but mine, when you connect it to a smartphone, has the ability to download additional cycles.

I can download things like Quick Wash (20 mins) to the "Download Cycle" slot. It takes seconds and it can be changed whenever you want by downloading a different one.

Sounds like the same one I have, I agree this is a mega handy feature!!!

It will be more energy and water efficient than your quick wash approach.

Our Bosch WM shows the water and electricity usage on each cycle. The 3.5 eco wash is most efficient. The shortest cycle is 15 minutes (30 degrees) and gets used for swimmers etc so it’s pretty flexible.

A SIX hour wash is more energy efficient than a 20 minute one!

Give over! 😆

@PinkiOcelot because for the vast majority of the time it's doing absolutely nothing, the clothes are just soaking them it flips them around and they soak again. It's incredibly energy efficient, but....🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

The washing machine is still running for six hours though, compared to 20 minutes!!! 🙄Give over. There is no way in a million month of Sundays that a six hour wash would be more energy efficient than a 20 minute one. 🙄

@FadeAwayAndRadiate

6 hours on stand by is definitely more environmentally friendly that 20 minutes on full tilt.

if you Google you'll find very basic explanations of how.

ReviewingTheSituation · 19/08/2023 10:26

It's not the length of time, but what's happening in that time that matters.

The car analogy posted several times on this thread is a good one. If you drive from Cornwall to Scotland as fast as you can, you'll get there quickly but use a lot of fuel (revving, accelerating etc).
If you drive at a much slower speed, you'll take longer but use much less fuel through more efficient driving and making the car work less hard.
Fastest is definitely not always most economical.

The mechanics are of course very different but the comparison is sound.

It has been explained many times why a 20min wash is uneconomical and why a long wash is better (for fuel and water).

I'm afraid I couldn't care less - there is no way I would have my clothes sitting in a washing machine for 6 hours, environmentally friendly or not!

My old top loader takes less than an hour from starting up to the clothes being on the line, that will do me fine.

In the middle of a cost of living crisis and the most alarming climate changes for generations, it baffles me that people are happy to waste money and needlessly use extra water/electricity.

I get that we are all used to doing things a certain way, but at some point we will have to change our habits.

We are leaving the planet in a terrible state for the next generation, but most people simply don't care.

I am well aware that much, much bigger changes need to happen to make a step change in emissions, but (as the saying goes) - every little helps. If everyone cut their electricity usage, it WOULD make a difference (and we'd all be better off). But most people won't because 'everyone else isn't'.

Wear clothes more, wash less often (that's another whole debate, but it comes up often on here), and wash more efficiently. The carbon saving would be worth knowing about.

I'll just get slated now, I know that. But it just makes me sad that people don't see the bigger picture and aren't prepared to make small changes in their routine to make it work.

i have a new hoover machine so still experimenting.

i found a 60 degree wash with 1400 spin for 59 mins. I will now stick to that for ever!

i dont buy into this 20 degree washing. You need hot water for clean clothes .

"In the middle of a cost of living crisis and the most alarming climate changes for generations, it baffles me that people are happy to waste money and needlessly use extra water/electricity."

It has been explained on here by several people, why they (and I) refuse to use the longer eco cycle on our machines - it leaves the washing smelling damp and musty even if removed immediately. Add the eco cycle on the dishwasher to that which doesn't leave dishes clean. See also puny hoovers where you'd be better off on your knees sucking the dust up with a straw. Etc. etc. All too often energy efficient= bloody useless.

frankiefirstyear · 18/08/2023 19:44

Is yours an LG? Mine says 3.45 sometimes and I just can't let it go for that long so I always cancel it and use the quick cycle. Would let it run though if I thought it'd recalculate.

Hoover. When it starts it says 3:45 but if I look back 5 mins later it’ll say 2 something normally

There is a middle ground though.

Most dishes will clean fine in an eco cycle in a dishwasher (unless you bought a crap dishwasher). So use that unless you’ve cooked a roast and have tins that need a higher temp. Why must it be run as fast as possible - are you that desperate for clean plates?

Same with clothes washes. If your washing machine smell, clean it!

The planet is in trouble - you can wash your clothes a bit more slowly.

Xenia · 19/08/2023 16:50

I don'[t care if it is uses more energy to be slower. Life is short. I want things as good as they used to be not worse. that is the problem - that in a large number of area of life things are being imposed on us that are worse without our having voted on these huge changes, such as phasing out gas boilers etc. At end of this month it will cost me £12.,50 to drive 5 minutes, every single time.

If your clothes smell during a wash cycle your machine is dirty and/or you're not using enough detergent. You should be able to do a long wash and leave overnight with no smell. Smell = bacterial growth.

DragonDoor · 19/08/2023 16:56

You can manually edit the settings you want - if you don’t want a prewash, just up the temperature on a ‘mixed load’ cycle.

Shinyandnew1 · 19/08/2023 16:56

Are there no shorter ones? I use a half hour wash at 40 or a 50 minute cycle at 60.

Please credit me with some intelligence; I didn't say the machine smelled. I said that clothes washed on the four and a half hour eco cycle smelled musty at the end of the wash, even if removed straightaway. They don't when washed on shorter cycles. I'm hardly going to save the planet by binning all our clothes because they smell damp and fusty.

And thanks. I do know know how to use my dishwasher, dishes are pre rinsed or soaked in the sink beforehand. The eco cycle is still crap. Indesit, for reference. And who said anything about fast cycles and needing clean plates, I didn't. The cycle we use is about three hours, so hardly short.

We have voted for green policies, they’ve been in manifestos for years.

Given your income I imagine you can buy a ULEZ complaint car without too much trouble.

You clearly don’t know how to use a dishwasher. You aren’t meant to pre rinse dishes before they go in the dishwasher. It makes the dishwasher work less well.

On the washing machine front it sounds like you aren’t using enough detergent.

dementedpixie · 19/08/2023 17:53

You arent supposed to pre rinse dishes and scraping them is suffucient. The detergent needs something to work on. If the dishes are practically clean already then the detergent will attack the actual dishes and can damage the coatings on the dishes instead

My Samsung says shit like this, then an hour and a half later it’s merrily chirping it’s “finished” tune.

This made me laugh. I was on the phone to a friend when i was waiting for my Samsung to finish and he said what's that is that your washing machine and started laughing 😆. I use the mixed load setting mostly as the eco wash takes nearly 3 hours

Yants · 19/08/2023 19:01

My top tip (or "hack" as I believe they're now called) is to start off on a hot wash of 50 or 60 degrees, let it slosh around for a bit in the hot water, then cancel that cycle and start it again on the quick 20 min.
