To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

Does it actually take that long though? I have a Samsung and when I set the programme it says over 3.5 hours on the display. However it then turns and weighs the load and then the time normally drops by a lot so it takes less than two hours.

The other thing to do is put it on a delayed start. I do this so that I can time it to be finished when I'm up in the morning and get it straight out. It doesn't matter how many hours it takes then. Long washes are far more energy efficient.

Aposterhasnoname · 17/08/2023 12:07

My Samsung says shit like this, then an hour and a half later it’s merrily chirping it’s “finished” tune.

Thehonestbadger · 17/08/2023 12:07

2-3 hours is reasonable for a ‘proper’ wash but not having a ‘intense’ 60 minute and a ‘quick’ 30 minute type of setting would be deal breaker for me.

Ours also has a 20 minute ‘rinse and spin’ but I don’t find it’s enough to make stuff smell/feel clean properly.

personally I would change it, it would drive me nuts having to choose between 5.5 hours or 20 minutes 🤦‍♀️😂

LemonLight · 17/08/2023 12:09

Gosh almost 6 hours is a long time for a single wash! I mostly use a daily wash that takes about 1 hour depending on the temperature. I've only used the other programs on my for specific items or especially grubby laundry.

Xenia · 17/08/2023 12:10

This is all about the imposition of eco stuff on us without our consent. I use the 50 min cycle but the normal one is nearly 3 hours on our brand new Bosch which my sons use. Even the new shower head I bought I had to take out not one but two metal blockers which make it run very slowly to "save water" even though I never consented to that measure of blocking it so it would be worse than the one I used to have.

I have a bath that doesn't fill up properly, the drainage hole is very low, all because the place is designed to save energy.

It's nonsensical.

Olika · 17/08/2023 12:16

That's ridiculous. Are there any other programmes (whatever they call it not important, check the temperature) that you could use?

amusedbush · 17/08/2023 12:17

I have a Samsung washing machine and pretty much exclusively use the daily wash setting, which is just over an hour. If it's a small load, I can choose to use less water and it's done in 50 minutes.

Our washing is never massively dirty or stained so that probably helps but everything comes out clean and smelling nice.

ImGoingThroughChanges · 17/08/2023 12:19

have my first LTB

OsirisservesAnubis · 17/08/2023 12:19

YANBU 5hours + is ridiculous.

BUT, and I mean this in the nicest way, have you read the manual?

My machine has its standard wash at 3hrs 44 (which I thought was excessive) and I just put up with it until one day I browsed the instructions, and there's a time save mode! It's not obvious on the control panel, but it takes my long was down to 1hr 20.

isthismylifenow · 17/08/2023 12:19

That is ridiculous. I do all my laundry, multiple loads, washed and dried in 5 hours.

But I did make the mistake of buy a Samsung. I hated that thing so much, I sold it after two weeks.

Granted, I did have a Miele before that, and they have the most fantastic short wash cycles. So going from 30 mins to 2 hours was a major eff up for my system.

I sold it and bought another Miele and now I am happy again.

I just got the bog standard entry level one, no bells and whistles. None of the dos business either. It just does what it needs to. And it doesn't bloody sing!

viques · 17/08/2023 12:20

The first time I used my newish washing machine (John Lewis) I had a similar response. Then I spotted the reduce time button. Issue solved.

cocoloco117 · 17/08/2023 12:20

Just play around with the settings until your find one that gives you the time you want. You don’t have to do a cotton wash Im sure there’s a good reason for all the different washes for different fabrics but for regular clothes not wool/silks then does it really matter? Sticking everything on mix colours 30deg 1h20m works for me (not a Samsung though).

CherryMaDeara · 17/08/2023 12:22

Did it do these mammoth 6 hour washes when you bought it?

Why didn't you complain when you were in the warranty period? Or the 30 day refund period?

AlwaysJumping · 17/08/2023 12:22

I don’t use my eco cycle as it takes 3-4hours! Run a normal cotton at 30 and it’s just over an hour usually once it’s weighed. I know the eco just use less water and power but still!

hygieneversusplanet · 17/08/2023 12:22

There might be something wrong with your washing machine, or it might be a faulty model?

MaybeSmaller · 17/08/2023 12:23

My Siemens takes just under 3hrs but I almost never use the cotton cycle at 40 degrees.

What I class as the normal wash- "mixed fabrics" i think It's called - takes just over 1hr at 40 degrees and that's fine.

😂you “didn’t consent to it” 😂

You bought it! I assumed no one forced you to take it? You could have chosen something else.

Oliotya · 17/08/2023 12:25

My cottons cycle is 3.5 hours. I tend to just do my washing a day in advance, so it sits in the machine overnight and gets hung out in the morning. I don't like the really short cycles, no good with filthy kids and sweaty gym stuff.
5 hours is daft though.

lezsucks · 17/08/2023 12:26

My Samsung doesn't offer a 30 C wash, only 20,40, 60 or 90. It claims to be 9kg only way you'd fit 9kg in if it was lead or something . I hate it! It does do a mixed load in 1hr 30 but its washing ability is dubious.

Elphame · 17/08/2023 12:30

I use the mix cycle on my LG pretty much exclusively. The specialist wash cycles seem to last forever and I have better things to do than spend every day washing. I want to do 3 loads on one day and be done with it for a week.

There is a 30 minute "quick cycle" but it uses 20 degree water and a very slow spin. By the time I've overridden that then it's 45 minutes

I miss my old Hoover which had a lovely 15 minute cycle which was great at times.

Mammyloveswine · 17/08/2023 12:31

My daily cycle is 59 mins and my quick wash is 14! I love it as can fly through light washing!

EhrlicheFrau · 17/08/2023 12:31

The longer cycles are supposed to be more economical because they effectively use duration of soaking more than mechanical drum movement to wash. I use a 2 hour wash but do it late at night/early in morning when it's cheaper. Most machines have long and short cycles and/or adaptions to cycles.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 17/08/2023 12:31

madeinmanc · 17/08/2023 11:57

These so-called eco friendly cycles end up pushing people into using less environmentally friendly quick washes.

I miss my machine from the early 2000s that took about an hour or ninety minutes for a full cycle.

My DM has a hotpoint Aquarius from early 2000s which has these length cycles and has lasted forever with fewer issues

I’ve got a Miele that was bloody expensive has letters and numbers and it’s good but have had repair people out once so far for it.

LauraNicolaides · 17/08/2023 12:34

Run it overnight, or when you're at work.

It's cheaper to run because most of the time the stuff is just sitting there soaking in the water - zero electricity, nothing being heated or whirred around.
