To think 5h45m for a standard cotton wash is an absolute piss take???

Had our washing machine about 18 months. Paid about £750 for it, new. It was the latest Samsung model, and (claims) takes a 8KG load. It is a combi dryer aswell but that’s not what my post is about.
I have just put a load in, nowhere near 8kgs, and on a standard cotton wash at 40 degrees, the time is 5 HOURS AND 45 MINUTES.

I think this is insane. The only quick wash option is a 20 min cycle which I do often use but not always and I like to wash some items ‘properly’. When you buy white goods you don’t realise how crap they really are and I’m so pissed off with this shit machine! Tempted to change it. DH thinks it’s ‘fine’!! I think 5 hours and 45 minutes just for a wash is a complete joke and nowhere near efficient. AIBU to get rid of this machine and buy a new one insisting on a full info of standard cycles before I buy!!!

i have a new hoover machine so still experimenting.

i found a 60 degree wash with 1400 spin for 59 mins. I will now stick to that for ever!

i dont buy into this 20 degree washing. You need hot water for clean clothes .

You don't really. It's the detergent and not the heat of the water that cleans the clothes.

Where I live most people use top loaders which do not heat the water. And just rigged up to a cold tap feed. People are not walking around with unclean clothes because they didn't get washed at 60 degrees.

People in Australia/NZ have washed clothes in cold water for years. Our clothes, I can assure you, are clean (and my whites are sparkling white).

Threenow · 19/08/2023 20:56

@isthismylifenow is correct. I forgot to say in my post that it is the detergent which is the main reason clothes are clean, not the water temp.

Wexone · 19/08/2023 20:56

your right about pre rising dishes for dishwasher..even the dishwasher adverts on the telly tell you not to pre rinse

Scaryghost · 19/08/2023 21:57

After using the 2 1/2 hour cotton wash for a year, I found I can do 30/40/60 degrees in 14 minutes and spin at 1400. Everything comes out clean!

justasking111 · 19/08/2023 22:04

That's insane for a 40c wash. My new washing machine annoyed me taking hours until I worked out the short cuts. 40c 38 minutes. 60c 58 minutes. Until I cracked the code I wanted to send mine back

If you are wanting it done more quickly, why don’t you use a quicker cycle? Or shorten the time?

That cycle is that length because that’s what the manufacturer has established is the best balance between time, water, energy and cleanliness. It will have a lot of time build in for soaking the clothes.

if you are more concerned with time than with energy, water or cleanliness then select a different cycle. Clearly that one is not for you.

it would be fine for me because I want the cycle that uses least energy and least water while still getting clothes clean. I don’t care about the time element because we wash over night anyway.

Please dont wash overnight!!!! How many times must this be pointed out!!!! So dangerous a fire risk.

The fire risk seems no higher to me. It's more important to have a smoke alarm near the machine to alert you if it catches fire (or for that matter any other electrical fault occurs).

Agree.
I don’t sit and watch the washing machine when it’s on during the day so as long as I have working and well placed fire and smoke alarms, what’s the increased risk?
The only time don’t have it on is when I’m out and the dog is home alone just incase.

I always do my washing overnight so it’s ready to hang up in the morning.

Daphnis156 · 19/08/2023 22:57

In the Green Future we will all be back dashing washing against stones in the river- for seven hours.
So just be glad: 5 hours is quick!

purplehair1 · 20/08/2023 00:46

We have a ‘speed’ program on our machine we use for almost every wash / does 15 or 30 mins. Seems fine. I can’t be arsed with discovering what all the ‘delicate’ ‘sports wash’ ‘dark wash’ ‘cotton wash’ programmes do. And they are all much longer.

PurpleCarpets · 20/08/2023 01:00

Agree, baffling and pointless! We have one for "five shirts".

All the programmes just sloosh stuff around in soapy water. That's how clothes get clean. The multiple versions of essentially the same thing are clearly marketing bollocks. No commercial machine has anything like them.

AuntyBumBum · 20/08/2023 01:10

Are you some sort of cool wife? Undermining these things is reckless, crazy talk. It's very carefully designed for five shirts by experts. I once put three pairs of knickers and a hand towel on that programme. The machine exploded and we all died. (To make it worse I ran it overnight.)

PansyP · 20/08/2023 07:39

You sure its not a problem with your water pressure? I had this issue that the washer was calculating mad times and it was down to the water not coming in hard enough. Had some plumbing rearranged and fixed issue. Mind you it never got as high as five hours 😂

Im old enough to remember a hot water pipe running into my washing. Ive been in possession of washing machines for 30 years, hence why i still hot wash. 3 whites at 60, you dont need any extra chemicals to make them extra white.

Doone21 · 20/08/2023 16:33

You're right. Its madness. How on earth would you even get the washing hung out to dry same day.

Threenow · 19/08/2023 10:41

I'm afraid I couldn't care less - there is no way I would have my clothes sitting in a washing machine for 6 hours, environmentally friendly or not!

My old top loader takes less than an hour from starting up to the clothes being on the line, that will do me fine.

@Threenow

I've no idea why you're aiming that at me? Or why you're being so arsey? I didn't say you or anyone should??

i was explaining why it's more economical to someone who doesn't understand.

mine takes about 1.45 and that stretches my patience, especially now I won't run it overnight or while I'm out.

I miss my old top loader, it took me ages to get used to a front loader again.

Oh do get over yourself! I wasn't "aiming" anything at you, or being "arsey" - merely pointing out that I couldn't care less how economical it might be to have clothes sitting in a washing machine for 6 hours it wouldn't suit me, or most people I imagine, who want to do their washing and get it out of the machine as quickly as they can.

when you @ someone's name you are directing your comment to them. So you did & you were being arsey.

there was nothing wrong with my post so you get over yourself.

itsmyp4rty · 21/08/2023 07:56

It's rained all summer and I'm not on a meter so I couldn't care less if a 3hr 30 cycle uses a bit less water than a 30 minute one.

From what I've read the difference in cost between an eco - taking hours and hours - and a normal wash is a matter of pence. And our eco wash is 40 degrees while our quick daily wash is 30 - so the quick daily on ours may even be cheaper.

I loathe these ridiculously long cycles on washing machines.

itsamedicalmystery · 21/08/2023 08:23

It's lying to you. It will weigh the wash and then adjust the cycle time as it's going along. It will then play an annoying tune to you when it's finished, in celebration of beating it's predicted cycle time. (Now singing little said tune in my head).
