It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

Record it if you’re out. Viewing figures matter!

This makes no sense unless you’re part of the 5000 or so households that form the audience research board. Viewing figures don’t come from the general
population.

I won’t be watching as football bored me to tears, but I’m sure the men in the house will.

TableA · 17/08/2023 08:39

The competition is in Australia. PW is due in NY this weekend. The logistics of getting him to Australia and the impact of cancelling what he's supposed to be doing would be enormous. Plus the criticism of flying all that way for one game

Are any senior politicians going?

Coolblur · 17/08/2023 08:39

We'll be watching. I want to add to your list that it's about showing our sons that womens sport is just as entertaining, and the standard of womens football is as good as mens (if not better).

DS loves football and has been heavily invested in this and other major competitions. He watches the womens league games regularly and they feature in his ongoing never ending commentary ('Mum/Dad did you see the game where...'). He has no issue playing with girls at football training or in the school playground, he doesn't even think about it. It's refreshing to see such a huge change from my generation.

CrazyFrogDingDing · 17/08/2023 08:10

It doesn't change my mind. It's still shit.

What exactly do you think is shit about it? I can understand not liking football at all but it seems you just don't like football when it's women playing.

Why is that? 🤔

I don't think people watching recordings will feature in viewing figures.

If PW flew to Australia to watch one match, he’d be criticised for contributing to the climate crisis

He doesn’t usually worry about the climate crisis but I agree, it’s a very convenient excuse.

I don't think people watching recordings will feature in viewing figures.

That’s true but broadcasters do keep track of watching on demand so that might be the way to do it.

burnoutbabe · 17/08/2023 08:46

Recordings do count towards viewing figures

But only if you are a monitored house.

SalviaDivinorum · 17/08/2023 08:46

I cannot imagine a worse way of spending a lovely Sunday morning.

No one will be watching it here.

TheChosenTwo · 17/08/2023 08:48

Who the hell is PW?! 😂

YetiTeri · 17/08/2023 08:50

I didn't 'demand' anyone watch but I'm not going to apologise for asking. Or standing up for something. Or having an opinion and a voice. Or calling out what's happening with the Spanish team or the Nigerian team. I don't care if people support England.

Last season the top women's teams showed they could fill stadia in the WSL and so more matches were scheduled in them. England kits are sold out at kids sizes and many adult sizes but you still can't buy Mary Earp's goalkeeper shirt because Nike didn't make one for sale.

I won’t be watching. Sorry OP but I really don’t enjoy women’s football, I’m a die hard football fan but I just can’t get excited by the women’s games

woollencats · 17/08/2023 08:51

My family will be watching. My boys play football and have loved watching this World Cup.

Lovely to see how the opposing teams interact with each other with care and respect. Great for the next generation to see.

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/08/2023 08:51

I don’t enjoy football, whether it’s male or female or mixed. I have no interest in it. It’s pleasing for fans that England have reached the final, but that’s all, as far as I’m concerned. Male footballers are paid an obscene amount of money in the top echelons and I recognise that isn’t the same for women’s football.

I think football often engenders an aggressive attitude towards opponents and it appears that that was demonstrated in the incident that has been referred to.

AuntieMarys · 17/08/2023 08:52

I'm not remotely interested in any sport so won't be watching.

Threenow · 17/08/2023 08:52

Is it only football which is worthy of being watched? What about all the other sports played by women, are they not important? Women are playing sport all the time at an international level (well they are here anyway) so why single out football?

What a patronising and sanctimonious post. It’s not silly, it’s sport, it’s exercise, it’s escapism. I’m not a fan of art galleries or musicals but I Know many people are. But I don’t think either are silly.

of course you don’t have to watch the match, no-one does, but you don’t have to suggest that those of us who will happily watch us are “silly”.

in my view it’s snide little posts like yours which are really one of the most negative aspects of MN.

slashlover · 17/08/2023 08:54

I'll be working, hopefully it means it'll be quiet.

Why don’t you start threads about the ones you care about and then we’ll know what to watch?

(rather than pissing on someone else doing the same)

Iamclearlyamug · 17/08/2023 09:01

HorsePlatitudes · 17/08/2023 07:35

They are utter heroes and I can’t believe how far women’s football has come. My kids don’t believe me when I say we weren’t even given the chance to play at school. I hate the macho football culture esp here, and I’m sure the atmosphere at those games is brilliant.

But above all it’s great that it’s becoming so mainstream

Just waiting now for men to try and barge in and claim they new to be on the team because they identify as women.

Ugh and sadly that will happen. Its only a matter of time, because God forbid women keep anything for themselves 🙄

I'm not "pissing on someone else" but OP is very evangelical about women's football and totally ignoring all the other sports women do well at.

Btw I'm not in England, and not interested in football, but on the sports news here this evening I saw more women's sport being featured than men's. I don't care much about any sport, although I did watch a lot of rugby in my youth, but it annoys me that so much emphasis is being put on football along with OP insisting we should all watch it.

Go Spain!

Adelstrop · 17/08/2023 09:05

I wish them well, but would rather watch paint dry, slowly.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 17/08/2023 09:07

I will probably be in a bar, it will probably be on but I wont be going out of my way to watch it.

Porridgeislife · 17/08/2023 09:09

I find football to be very dull so won’t be watching it. Would rather watch netball or tennis to be honest.

Thesenderofthiscard · 17/08/2023 09:10

I help out with a girls footie team, and the Lionesses success has been phenomenal for us in terms of interest, support, investment from the FA, sponsorship
etc
its been fantastic and yes we will be watching!
