It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

‘I'm not "pissing on someone else" but OP is very evangelical about women's football and totally ignoring all the other sports women do well at.’

Because it the women’s FOOTBALL World Cup final. Football. No-one is claiming women can’t play other sports well, but this happens to be about football!!

Soubriquet · 17/08/2023 07:27

Nope. I hate football. Men’s or women’s. I am not interested at all

You could just put it on and do other things. I can’t stand football either but I do believe in supporting women trying to succeed in their own right in male dominated sports.

I personally would put it on but I don’t have a tv licence anymore so can’t support (even though I definitely would).

Busubaba · 17/08/2023 09:14

Hell no!

I can't stand football when men are playing so certainly don't want to see a bunch of women playing it either.

I did see on the news a clip of a woman player prancing around doing some kind of tik tok dance and that was ruddy awful.

TheYadaYada · 17/08/2023 08:38

This makes no sense unless you’re part of the 5000 or so households that form the audience research board. Viewing figures don’t come from the general
population.

I won’t be watching as football bored me to tears, but I’m sure the men in the house will.

Oh well, that makes my previous post redundant. If only a select tiny few get registered how on earth do they know when millions watch something?

SlipSlidinAway · 17/08/2023 09:16

Nope - hate football.

maratara · 17/08/2023 09:17

Can I pls ask you watch the Australia vs Sweden match ?
We need love. All a bit devastated.
That was closer than it looked yesterday ( well the 2nd half anyway)
Soccer is just a sport that is so popular here but has never had the success that we have in other sports ( remember there are less than 28 million of us).

Try telling Lauren James that…

Exactly, there are plenty of incidents of violent conduct in women's football. I referee girls football from U13s - U18s and it gets very heated, and boy do they hold a grudge!

No one would be watching that game if it was men's football. Even the players would rather not have to play it.

Aposterhasnoname · 17/08/2023 09:19

Well I wasn’t going to, I’m meeting a friend for lunch but you’re right, so now I’m thinking take the tv in the garden, few drinks, and a bbq instead <texts friend for opinion>

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 17/08/2023 09:19

After seeing one of our players stamp on an opposing player ("stumbling" my arse), no I won't watch it. She belied and betrayed all those critically important points in your post with one stupid petulant action.

lemans · 17/08/2023 09:20

Nope. Couldn't care less about it and the more it gets shoved in my face, the more annoying it gets.

Absolutely. Both teams have been incredible and Sam Kerr is balloon d'Or worthy.

Seeing the way the Aussie's have got behind this tournament has made.my heart soar. You already do women's sport better than the UK but this is a legacy moment for girls football in Australia/NZ.

I plan to watch it with teen ds - we will be on holiday.

However a slight issue I have is about the showing it's performance not violence statement.

I do have some reservations about watching if James is allowed to play. I think England need to send a message that they don't condone this sort of behaviour, they have a team that's played amazingly without her for 2 matches and I question her ability to manage the emotions of a final if she couldn't manage a knock out game.

Aquestioningmind · 17/08/2023 09:23

YetiTeri · 17/08/2023 07:58

She made a stupid mistake. She apologised, the player accepted her apology. She took her punishment without arguing.

When Beckham did the same in 1998 there was off the pitch violence and appalling response to him.

This is about doing things differently.

An apology does not make things okay. She’s a bad role model, apology or not. As an adult she knows better and ‘being in the heat of the moment’ (as someone said on twitter) is never an excuse.

I acknowledge the issues you’ve raised in your OP, but there are more sports than football where women are treated as lesser and struggle to be successful - women’s hockey, for instance and swimming where funding is much lower than mens. And those don’t have the levels of nastiness that are sadly inherent in football.

Againstmachine · 17/08/2023 09:27

WitcheryDivine · 17/08/2023 08:54

Why don’t you start threads about the ones you care about and then we’ll know what to watch?

(rather than pissing on someone else doing the same)

The OP posted this in AIBU so yes other people are going to post not agreeing with her, it's what this section is here for.

EggOverEasy · 17/08/2023 09:30

I will if you can guarantee that England is going to lose! 😉

Cyclebabble · 17/08/2023 09:31

All of the above... and God its exciting to watch!

PurpleBananaSmoothie · 17/08/2023 09:33

I can’t stand football but we’ll be watching it. DH would be watching it anyway as he loves all football but I love that him and my dad are into it and not just dismissing the achievement because it’s women’s football. We have a toddler daughter and she likes kicking a ball (I don’t think we can say she likes football as we’re not at that stage yet) but I’m excited for her to grow up in a world where opportunities are available to her. DD likes sitting with her daddy and watching sport, so she’d have been watching little bits of it in between playing.

Yesterday DH was on an internal call during the game and the man chairing the call said “I know at head office the England game is on and some of you would rather be watching that”. It wasn’t the women’s England game or the lionesses, just the England game. They had one of the conference rooms showing it and snacks out, same as they’d done for the men’s games.

hygieneversusplanet · 17/08/2023 09:34

The only sport I am ever genuinely enthusiastic about it tennis, I'm afraid.

JustJoinedRightNow · 17/08/2023 09:36

I went to the game last night and we were gutted to have lost. I will be supporting the Lionesses in the final. This World Cup has been incredible, and I say that as someone who wasn't interested in elite football before the start of the WC.

Also just to let you know that here in Australia the Matildas smashed the tv viewings record last night. The week before the men's AFL game was delayed due to the game going into overtime and then the penalty shootout.
All of Australia has gotten behind the Matildas and we are so proud of them.

FlowersareEverything · 17/08/2023 09:39

The 1966 men’s win is still talked about regularly, 57 years after the fact. I don’t think I could cope with a repeat of that. I’m so grateful to be in my 60s and won’t be alive in another 50 years. 😂

Viva Espana!

Btw you still haven't told me what is so special about FOOTBALL.

Namechangedforthis25 · 17/08/2023 09:45

Will watch it

precisely for the reasons you have mentioned
