It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

Go look at Sam Kerr's goal, Ella Toone's goal, Lauren Hemp's pass and Russo's finish then come back and say women's football is shit.

I have zero interest in football and I'm not English. Why do I have to watch a team I've no interest in play a sport I've no interest in?

Such an English centric mindset.

WandaWonder · 17/08/2023 08:02

Why cannot it just be sport? sure it is women not men but why can it not be treated as sport why does it have to have an agenda to it? and people needing encouraging to watch?

why does it have to be complicated?

if it is good enough it is, it should not the players to be patronised and patted on the head like good little girls, if people want to watch it they will

There is huge investment in football already, to the detriment of other sports. There is plenty of money in women’s football already, and it gets masses of publicity … much more than cricket, rugby ( more money for women’s RL please) and plenty of other sports.

I’ll still watch, as I live sport …. But I don’t see it as some sort of moral crusade

I can see that argument, but the interest in women's football is seeping into other sports. Women's cricket and rugby wouldn't have made mainstream TV without it.

Anyone thinks Sam Kerr's goal wasn't high quality is just on an agenda.

Couple of comedians on here slagging off women’s football when I’m 99% sure men’s football managers and players will be avidly watching to see what they can learn 😂

Nickersnackersnockers · 17/08/2023 08:04

Still can't understand why women want to play football. It's hardly ladylike is it

Dolores87 · 17/08/2023 08:05

We made a huge deal for the mens final when England got there was it last year? So despite not liking football i intend to make a huge deal about the ladies final on Sunday

Because women were banned from playing by the FA for 50 years.

Because the opportunities for girls are nowhere near that for boys in sport. Not even close.

Because there is a mental health crisis in girls and exercise and role models have a huge role to play - particularly in the absence of mental health support.

YABU demanding anyone watch anything they don't want to Angry

Stop bossing women about and let us decide for ourselves how to spend our precious time.

This tournament doesn't mean to me what you claim it does.

Samcro · 17/08/2023 08:05

i hate football so won't be watching. hope they win though.

multisurface · 17/08/2023 08:05

How does watching a football game I've no interest in show my daughters they matter as much as my son in any way at all?

WitcheryDivine · 17/08/2023 08:06

Kendodd · 17/08/2023 08:00

If the weather is good, does anyone know where I can find a list of fan zone (big public outdoor screens) I can go and watch? I can't find one online.

I can’t but it’s worth googling World Cup fan zone and your local area to see. I expect councils will be planning them as we speak.

They are utter heroes and I can’t believe how far women’s football has come. My kids don’t believe me when I say we weren’t even given the chance to play at school. I hate the macho football culture esp here, and I’m sure the atmosphere at those games is brilliant.

But above all it’s great that it’s becoming so mainstream

Just waiting now for men to try and barge in and claim they new to be on the team because they identify as women.

Yes the Aussie fans booing England before the match even started was a beautiful atmosphere.

The Australians are complaining about how England played, I have no idea as I don't watch football but apparently lots of fouls by England players according to what I've heard so maybe it is more macho culture than you think.

To answer the original question No I won't be watching, no one in my house will.

Russooooo · 17/08/2023 08:08

I’ll be watching. I’ve always loved football and I now love having a team I can properly get behind. They’re amazing.

MansfieldLark · 17/08/2023 08:09

Sorry but I can't except stamping on someone is a mistake. My children have enough control never to stamp anyone or anything. She is a grown adult, she is lucky she didn't seriously hurt the other player.

Because its brilliant.
If you go to a public place to watch it would be almost impossible to not get swept up in the excitement of it, doesn't matter if it's not your country, the enthusiasm is infectious, you'll be cheering them along.
I say this as someone who has watched football (a game I'm not interested in) in another country, cheering along their team and really hoping they win.

frustratednomad · 17/08/2023 08:09

I'll be watching, for all the reasons you've given, also because my 11yr old dgd plays and I want to support her and all girls who play. Another reason we should be behind these girls is that too many men are trying to muscle in on female spaces so it's time for females to take over a mainly male sport.

Good luck Lionessess!

It was only the quarter finals the men’s team got to last year, just had to check as you’re right there was a terrific fuss.

I think it was 2021 during the men’s euros when England were in the final and sadly lost on penalties.

I only realised this week that England’s men’s team hasn’t been in a World Cup final since 1966 (I knew that that was the last time they won obviously).

GloriousSludge · 17/08/2023 08:10

We will be watching, dd plays football and the Lionesses are inspiring role models. I watch because it’s important to her, and I’ve started to really enjoy it even though I never normally watch sport on TV.

Itsokay2020 · 17/08/2023 08:11

We’ll be watching it! Hoping DD’s friendly pre-season match is postponed… I plan to make a pretty big fuss as it’s a remarkable achievement and hopefully one day it will mean that my DD and her female team mates are no longer heckled by teenage boys during their training sessions by telling them they are all rubbish at football (parents of these boys should be thoroughly ashamed)

WitcheryDivine · 17/08/2023 08:12

I haven’t heard anyone endorsing what she did, it was a foul and she was sent off and suspended for two games. What do you want, prison?

I’ve actually seen amazingly few cards in any of the games I’ve seen, that was an exception obviously.

notahappybunny7 · 17/08/2023 08:12

Roselilly36 · 17/08/2023 07:38

We will be watching, not particularly football fans, but always watch England games. I was a little surprised to read PW won’t be there, I thought he usually went to important matches.

Sexist prick, can’t say I’m surprised

TableA · 17/08/2023 08:13

I'm away this weekend with a group of mostly men. We have activities planed from 2pm each day and some late nights. They have already identified a pub that will be showing it and how to get there for 11am
