It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

I'll be watching and going for England even though they crushed my hopes of a public holiday if the Matilda's had one it all.

DangerousAlchemy · 19/08/2023 07:03

I'm driving back from Sheffield then & hate Radio 5 Live so no thanks. No doubt my DH will watch highlights/match later that night. He's out coaching my DS 15 1st footie match of the season so can't watch it live. He's stopped wfh the other day to watch last to mins of semi final. He's sports mad. I think it's important to support women's sport & some footie matches are exciting to watch but I'm still not much of a footie fan tbh. I usually have better things to do with my time. 🤷‍♀️

Myotherusernamewastakenagain · 19/08/2023 07:07

Nope from me. I never watchb the English national team unless they're likely to get beat.

Shoxfordian · 19/08/2023 07:09

I will watch if it goes to penalties because that’s the only part of football matches I like

Wonderwhyibother · 19/08/2023 07:15

Big fat nope from me. You couldn't even pay me to watch it, I cannot stand football (male or female).

Letitgonowgr · 19/08/2023 07:17

No thank you! I don’t need to be told what to watch! It’s a lovely day so we are going to an air show. My son will enjoy this a lot more!

CloudyMcCloudy · 19/08/2023 07:20

No need to ask here. We’ll be watching

YewandOak · 19/08/2023 07:21

No. I've got better things to do that I actually enjoy. Football bores me senseless whether it's men, women or children playing.

tuvamoodyson · 19/08/2023 07:45

No…I can’t stand women’s football.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/08/2023 07:46

Football really does evoke strong feelings doesn’t it? Love and hate In equal measure.

Im a massive football fan. Also love seeing British teams and players do well. So I’d be there with bells on if it were men or women.

I am starting to find all this “they actually play decent football” and “look how far the women’s game has come” and all The schmaltzy sentiment around the women’s game a bit patronising now though.

motherofcatsandbears · 19/08/2023 08:22

I’d rather watch paint dry than ANY football match, regardless of the skill level and gender of the players.
I won’t be watching it.

It’s not patronising- it’s just facts - if you know their history, they really have come a long way!

And judging from some of the comment on this thread, they are facts worth repeating.

I agree with you about all of the hype when it comes to the tabloids though!

ssd · 19/08/2023 08:41

Christ no. Its just another bloody football game to me and I'm sick to the back teeth with football.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/08/2023 08:45

@Furmitycorner798 i just think they’ve earned the right to just be footballers and talk about their game and the game. Not about their “journey” with sad music playing over the top. That’s all.

and yes, I do know the history. I follow football, all football, 52 weeks a year.

IndysMamaRex · 19/08/2023 10:20

I will be watching! I near screamed the house down on Wednesday so I will be apologising to my neighbours in advance 😂😂

Hereforaglance · 19/08/2023 10:23

U want ur kids only role model is some over paid overvinflsted egos football team who gets paid rediculous amount of money to kick a ball round a field what does that do forfor self esteem or feminism when nurses and doctors and other emergency services who do far more important things r using food banks wise up n quit the airhead feminism nonsense and actually look at what the suffragettes went through and fought for n it wasnt football i can guarantee u that n get ur kids better role models

CrazyFrogDingDing · 17/08/2023 07:33

No thanks, women's football is shit.

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/07/20/tech/french-soccer-ad-gender-swap/index.html

Many watch this?

RufustheFactualReindeer · 19/08/2023 10:40

I’m not fussed about football

however my dad really enjoys watching the women’s football as well and the mens and dh will be watching so in theory I will be in front of the television when it is on if that counts

what frustrates the hell out of me is that they didn’t get an open top bus at the euro's or whatever it was….there is no football tat to buy flags etc (here at least) and a lot of the politicians celebs football pundits who would be over there in a shot if it was the mens team aren’t going

Titchyfeep · 19/08/2023 10:44

Why would you watch something you had zero interest in? I’m sure there are much better things I could be doing with my time.

IndysMamaRex · 19/08/2023 10:53

The suffragettes & feminists fought for freedom & choice. They wouldn’t try to slam other women for making a choice that differs to their interests. That point is very un-feminist in itself. If you don’t want to watch that’s ok but don’t imply that watching or supporting means your a bad feminist. I choose to support other women’s right to choose to play/watch.

You say footballers are overpaid & bad role models. Simply not true for the women’s team (partially agree with you in the men’s side in terms of money & a couple of bad eggs)

and your point about doctors etc falls flat as there are 3 professional international player who are doctors 🤦‍♀️clearly not “airheads”

Again if you choose to not watch/support I respect that. But you might want to come down from that high horse once in a while might give you a different perspective

They aren't wrong though

They aren't wrong though

In what respect?

celticprincess · 19/08/2023 13:53

They’ll lose if I watch. The team we support always do!! I gave up years ago. Not all that interested anyway as not really a footie fan.

Vieve1325 · 19/08/2023 14:25

Sorry… but there’s sports which already display all of those values and more. Football has a long way to go to catch up.
