It doesn't matter if you don't like football, or if you don't like sport this tournament and this game is about so much more than that.

  • it's about showing women's sport is worthy of investment.
  • it's about giving different role models to young and particularly teenage girls.
  • it's about showing rivalry in performance but not through violence.
  • it's about showing our daughters they matter as much as our sons.
  • it's about showing women they can be coaches and compete with men on an equal footing.
  • it's about highlighting the battles women from many countries have undergone to get to this tournament.
  • it's about showing homophobia has no place in team sports.

And it's about giving women a voice in their sport.

The Spanish team are there in spite of their coach and have some really disturbing stories about how players have been treated. Without any eyes on women's sport these sorts of issues are allowed to take root.

I loathe football. I don't care which sex is playing. I won't be watching but I obviously hope they do well.

DS' usual 11am rugby training has been moved to earlier in the morning so that all of the squads can watch the final in the clubhouse after training. The rugby club are laying on a BBQ after the match too.

I understand the football match is taking place in the same stadium in which England won the RWC in 2003, so hopefully that bodes well Smile

It’s a no from me , the World athletics will clash with it and I’m watching that added to which I’m not remotely interested in it .

Bigtoeslittletoes · 19/08/2023 15:17

You’re preaching to the converted 🙂

CoffeeAndArt · 19/08/2023 15:49

I'm looking forward to it so much. I'm not English, but the team has play so so well, and will be shouting for them.

Despite living about 200 yards from a recently-Premier League football ground, I have no interest in any football - but I’ll be watching, or at least adding to the viewing figures, because it’s not about me. It’s no good complaining that our daughters aren’t getting equal opportunities when we don’t do the basics in supporting them. If you’re busy, record it or watch it on catch up. If you don’t like football, put it on in the background and go about your day. If the weather’s nice, look ahead to all the girls playing football in the rain this winter because they’ve found role models in our team, and feel a little bit good about that one day you boosted the viewing figures and helped their sport be taken seriously by investors.

You not liking football isn’t the point.

RabbitsRock · 20/08/2023 08:50

DH & I will be watching - neither of us are particularly interested in football but watch England games. It’s great that women’s’ football is on the rise. DD14 played for a while & was sometimes goalie. Wish she’d carried on as it was very good for her.

Lauraa7 · 20/08/2023 08:56

I’m watching! I watched the Australia England game in a pub in rural Australia. There were three England fans in the whole pub, but it was packed. Just amazing to see how far the game has come recently.

RuthW · 20/08/2023 09:00

Sorry. I won't be watching.

I have football

It's my birthday

I have better things to do.

I wish them all the best though

the80sweregreat · 20/08/2023 09:04

I can't watch as I want them to do the double so much and I feel if I watch them they won't ( which I know is totally bonkers )
I'll probably just get some updates on the phone and do some cleaning instead
I hope it's not penalties.
Good luck to them all

Unless you are part of Barb you aren't influencing the viewing figures at all.

My whole family is watching and supporting England. My daughter plays in an under 13s football club and I think women's football is great. The main difference between women's and men's football is that when woman are kicked by accident etc and fall down they get back up straight away! Non of this " oh my god my legs hanging off and I'm going to roll around on the pitch for ages" like you get with the men! 😂They get straight up, brush it off and get straight back to it! A bit lightheaded off course! 😊

It's an absolutely bonkers system!

Simonjt · 20/08/2023 11:31

That was a fab goal, zero defence

edwinbear · 20/08/2023 11:32

We’re watching the athletics World Champs too. Both DS & DD are competing athletes so watching Katarina Johnson-Thompson currently in gold medal position for GBR in the heptathlon is MASSIVE for us. DD has her first pentathlon next weekend so hopefully inspirational for her. We’re not interested in football.

No on their smart TV.... Live iPlayer/ITVX

Watching on Smart TVs/iplayer etc still only counts if you're on the viewing panel.
I am & all my viewing is counted, phone, tablet, TV, catch up - everything.

The only figures the industry uses are BARB ones. So unless you can persuade folk like me to watch the football - and you can't - the rest don't count officially

You see I was pursuaded. I do watch stuff like this "for the greater good".

I probably would also have watched the men's if they got into the final as a one off.

Againstmachine · 20/08/2023 12:20

A lot of it isn't for the greater good, there have been story's of hockey pitches being replaced with football ones.

Noone cared when the Women's rugby team played in their world cup final, it does nothing for women's athletics.

All this just reinforces the view of people that football matters over any other sport.

BabyTa · 22/08/2023 12:28

I'm Scottish, and the investment is sorely needed, but I can't bring myself to do it as it's soooo boring and not even the PM seems to recognise they are an English not British team. Also all these people tweeting about Lionesses didn't have anything to say about a certain Manchester United player. Complete tokenism
