I'm inclined to think we've been scammed. Am I being unreasonable?

Scam artist and Britain fell for it.

Only those that donated to the charitable foundation set up after Tom died surely?

Northernsouloldies · 13/10/2023 08:38

The whole thing was bollocks from start to finish. The media hype, his family using it as a launching pad to bring in money and wasn't the daughter the one who awarded herself a huge amount of money for a three day week.

lizzy8230 · 13/10/2023 09:35

I'm a bit conflicted on this... I'd hate to think the whole thing was a set-up and the daughter got dear old dad to do his walking up and down specifically to go to the media about it and turn it into the huge thing it became... I want to think that it was genuinely his doing, and he wanted to do his little bit to help, but it then got sort of hijacked by the daughter.

Whichever scenario, I think she's a total grifter. She saw an opportunity, whether it was right from the get go or whether it was when the whole thing began to snowball. The spa and the crazy salary for a bit of part time 'work' are so classless and grabby.

Only a certain type fell for it , e.g those weirdos who make a massive show of wearing a poppy, get over excited about William and Katherine’s kids like they are the second coming and record Lorraine to watch later.

Many of us called it for being a grift very early on but were slated on here for being un-British or wanting to destroy the NHS.

I believe Captain Tom was also in on it. Old people can be every bit as crafty as young people. A grifter doesn’t just become smiley, doddery and start wearing a cardigan with Wherthers Orginals in the pocket as soon as they collect their pension and bus pass. The way the media carried on was embarrassing.

Northernsouloldies · 13/10/2023 20:27

Agree with the above 100%.

And banged pans on doorsteps and judged people if they left the house more than once a day in lockdown but then rushed to "eat out to help out ' because Rishi told them to...

Zanatdy · 13/10/2023 20:44

If anyone didn’t know the money wasn’t going direct to the NHS then I suggest you research a bit more before donating. It was made very clear the money was for NHS charities, not the NHS. And boy they covered the story a lot. So listen more if you’re that concerned

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 13/10/2023 21:03

I didn’t like her from the start. She was just too pleased with herself and absolutely loved being in the spotlight. Every time I switched on the telly, there she was grinning inanely! I did nt say anything at the time as I thought I might get sent to the tower.

OliveToboogie · 13/10/2023 21:12

Grifter.....

Teder · 14/10/2023 09:34

I watched the piers Morgan interview. I tried to be open minded but they came across so badly. They’re so arrogant.

I don’t know if they set out to grift but they’ve certainly done that since then!

shadypines · 14/10/2023 23:38

Absolutely as @lizzy8230 says, she looked put of the window one morning, saw her old dad pottering up and down and the opportunity to grift perhaps started innocently but soon snowballed when the media bandwagon was boarded.

Diana45782 · 15/10/2023 03:53

😩

oakleaffy · 15/10/2023 08:45

Appalling behaviour- basically using her father to profiteer from. Shameless.
She has sullied the ''Captain Tom'' name- I donated in those first weeks of Lockdown, and now wish I'd not.
Probably like many others.
I don't want to be funding her sodding pool and lifestyle.

Wittyname10 · 15/10/2023 08:56

Absolute charlatan.

Paying herself 80k, building a spa “office” in her garden with the cash her dad raised, just a grifter with a posh accent so it’s all japes to her.

Her dad did a good thing, I don’t question his motives at all.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/10/2023 09:13

Isn't she just another loaded person benefitting from lockdown? Like all the PPE contracts etc? Some people always find a way to make money out of misery.

Thisbastardcomputer · 15/10/2023 09:15

I'd be very interested in the views of his other daughter, who avoided the limelight.

I didn't donate I just saw it as a big fuss about nothing, with Hannah pushing it with all her might.

It doesn't surprise me she tried skimming off for herself.

SherbetDips · 17/10/2023 17:03

this lady is exactly why I don’t jump on band wagons… clapping or an old man manipulated in to walking his garden..etc

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 17/10/2023 20:05

She really has no shame.

purpleme12 · 17/10/2023 20:11

Oh my god 🙈

balltraponthecote · 17/10/2023 20:18

Villain. And I always thought her father was very cold - the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

porridgeisbae · 21/10/2023 17:18

I don't think he seemed cold at all.

He was genuine and during his lifetime it was legit. But after that some of the family were blinded by £ signs. They could even have done it in a way that invited less reproach (made it clear where each source of money was going) but were too blase to do it.

I think it could be illegal as they were kind of claiming things like the books were for charity when they weren't.

Daineseturbo · 07/11/2023 22:27

Ha. Now they’ve got to tear down their spa. Hilarious.

x2boys · 09/11/2023 10:36

There is a documentary on channel.five on Sunday at 9pm about this it should be interesting.
