I'm inclined to think we've been scammed. Am I being unreasonable?

Given the biggest benefits bill, we have is pensions. Yes.

Pensions aren't a benefit. They are contributory. You have to pay into it for 35 years or you don't get it. If people aren't happy with this, then I am quite happy to no longer pay this part of the NI I pay every month, for 35 years, and I'll pay it into a private pension.

It is not factually correct to think state pensions are a benefit. For example, I will not get my pension unless I carry on working for the next 8 years, paying NI, to reach 35 years. They are a pension that are paid to people who have contributed to them, many of whom contribute and don't make it to drawing it out, and their relatives receive nothing, unlike a private pension.

YES One min posters are calling pensions a benefit the next they are saying if you dont pay your NI you wont get it, Gaslighting

That certainly hasn’t been said by me.

Pensions are in the same pot as benefits, the never-ending stream of cash that apparently our national insurance covers so actually the problem is, the national insurance isn’t covering any of it, if truth be told.

It’s not covering the NHS, and it is covering the pensions. One could naturally conclude that the pot is not big enough.

Something is going to have to give.

Pensions absolutely are a benefit, qualification for which is based on NI contributions - in exactly the same way as other contribution based benefits, such as JSA and various incapacity benefits are paid. If you don’t have enough contributions for those then you don’t qualify. And it is not correct to say that you need 35 years of contributions to claim state pension. New state pension is payable at a reduced rate with less than 35 years of contributions, once you have paid NI for ten years or more.

State pension is defined as a state benefit, and is administered by DWP - use of the word ‘benefit’ for state pension has always been classified in law from the time of the1946 National Insurance Act, which applied from the inception of the National Insurance scheme and the term ‘contributory benefit’ forms the legislative framework of the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992. Section 20 of that Act has the title ‘Descriptions of contributory benefits’. Contributory benefits under Part II of that Act are listed, including state pension. The introduction of the new State Pension from 6 April 2016 is also classified as a “benefit” under Section 1(1) of the Pensions Act 2014.

It’s not gaslighting. The state pension is legally defined as a contributory benefit, see my reply post above.

I'd rather the money went towards Mars bars for NHS staff than some chancer's swimming pool!

That isnt the two choices available.

MrsImFedUpOfTheWeather · 16/08/2023 00:36

@OnceAgainWithFeeling I totally agree with you. But the problems here are not (unless you inform me otherwise) at the feet of the tax-payer. The problems are with the employer. We donated money to save lives - not buy mars bars. Well - that was my understanding anyway -but it looks like I'm in a minority.

If the campaign had have been entitled 'support your local nurses', I would have still have given the same amount - but I wouldn't feel like I've been mis-led.

With respect, you haven’t got a fucking clue.

So did I! Just looked him up - 75 years old apparently.

Me too.
I had 'remembered him having a sudden heart attack, but have just realised it was Les Dennis' former comedy partner, Dustin Gee.

I used to get that lot mixed up back in the 80's.
Barrymore was another.

Not my cup of tea ☕

For the most part none of us knew this man and being old doesn't make you a Saint. The daughter went for it and created a capt. Moore industry and there is no way of knowing if dad was in on it.

Well.I assume he wss as he wss quite happy to do Laps a round his rather substantial.garden and make a single with Michael Ball(?).

AlexReventa · 16/08/2023 16:12

The Charity commission should have stepped in long before now.

Hoppinggreen · 16/08/2023 16:13

Ok, she’s a bit dodgy but she’s hardly kicking orphans to death is she?
She deserves the full force of the law IF she has done anything illegal but I don’t think she deserves such hate and vitriol

Mimilamore · 16/08/2023 16:16

Dodgy from the start... hated the whole thing, not surprised about any of this...

How must your Grandparents feel/or felt knowing you begrudged them every penny of their pension. Did they know how much you resented them ?

They both died before they received a penny from the state, which actually is what’s meant to happen if we are being honest.

Anyway, back to the matter in hand.

personally, I think the charitable donation should’ve gone towards free vending machines or whatever the medics required to get through the day both during Covid and now because it’s just as much of a shit show. I very much resent neonatal units having to rely on charity. When my agreement with the government is I pay taxes and they spend the money on neonatal units.

Blossomtoes · 16/08/2023 17:01

My agreement was that I paid NI for 44 years and I got a pension. 🤷‍♀️

And for you. I’ve got absolutely no issue with you taking it for a limited amount of time. But let’s not try and fall ourselves. There are plenty that have not paid in for 44 years and will take out for more than 44 years.

I really don’t think so - if life expectancy increases to 110 we’ll be a super race!

Fuckingfuming1 · 16/08/2023 17:17

People are already living to 110

CoffeeWithCheese · 16/08/2023 17:18

If the NHS is getting showered with stuff from it all - can we have some fucking teaspoons in staff kitchen cutlery drawers please?

Signed,

Our local hospital charity received a share and it was put towards the completion of a much needed new neo natal unit.

There were 2 separate charity pots.

His - all £38million of which went to various NHS trusts via NHS Charities Together

The foundation his daughter set up - which is under continued investigation

YeOldeBuxomWench · 16/08/2023 17:25

I think this story demonstrates totally what this pandemic was about - privileged people getting even richer off the back of the poor. She's just in the club.

Yes our trust charity received the funds that went towards the new unit - including family accommodation and a kitchen for families of neonatal babies to use. I hope that satisfies the OP.

I’m in agreement that the foundation is dodgy as f, however

“That’s what’s meant to happen”?! Jeez you are quite something

i don’t think our average life expectancy is to be less than 70
