I'm inclined to think we've been scammed. Am I being unreasonable?

I'd rather the money went towards Mars bars for NHS staff than some chancer's swimming pool!
👏

“That’s what’s meant to happen”?! Jeez you are quite something

i don’t think our average life expectancy is to be less than 70

Until 1971 our life expectancy was precisely 68 for a man. I totally appreciate that I will feel differently on my 79th birthday, but we are not entitled to live to 80.

It’s not about entitlement to live to 80

Science and progression means that we are

just like science and medicine is cutting the rate of infant mortality - what do you say about that

what is your proposed solution to an ageing population then?

Smartiepants79 · 15/08/2023 23:47

Staff morale and therefore staff retainment is vitally important. You can’t run any fancy equipment with no staff.
The NHS is in crisis- mainly a staffing crisis.

Yes agree there is a staffing but crisis.if they dealt with the abuse of sick and the handsomely paid managers managed this they wouldn't have a staffing crisis. The poor buggers that are doing three peoples jobs are desperately looking elsewhere. Some people abused working in the NHS during covid some worked there arses off, some didn't step over the doorway, worked from home the whole time but still wanted the glory and discounts people were offering.

There is no solution to an ageing population that’s going to happen. It can’t be stopped
However, we have to reconsider how much support we can offer. We privatise the NHS because we cannot maintain its current form. It was introduced at a time very much like the old age pension when life expectancy was precisely 68, and now it’s not. It’s unsustainable, so we the people have to pay more in or they get less out. Not suggesting eugenics or a mass cull although Boris did basically do one by the back door.

Agree I always smelt a rat, Piers Morgan shoved it down all our throats even losing his temper with a viewer who said they didn’t want to clap for Captain Tom and yes the school hall was the very expensive Bedford school where the offspring attended. Of course at the time of madness it was akin to treason to question the motives of this family.

I am of the (admittedly not professional) opinion that Piers Morgan is somewhat unhinged.

Just googled. It could have been Cliff Richard.

Can't see Cliff Richard being the wild party boy type somehow 😀😁

The worst thing about this is it is true! Where do they go!?

Drugs maybe? Isn't it meth or heroin or something where they use spoons? I'm not surprised if the stress of the issue within healthcare (especially when you can't make a decent cuppa) has driven some poor NHS workers to it.

The Charity commission should have stepped in long before now.

The Charity Commission stepped in over 2 years ago.

The Foundation was set up in June 2020, and the Commission was first involved in March 2021 - mostly stemming from the amount she was planning to take as her wage. Her starting point was £100,000 (initially only 60k for 3 days a week, then the FT option)

For context, yes, some charity CEOs do receive that, but in charities where income is £30-40m. The Captain Tom Moore Foundation reported an income of £1.1m. The Commission questioned the benchmarking done to reach that figure. She was permitted £85,000 for a max of 9 months, which is still an incredibly inflated amount for the income (remembering that the £38m is entirely separate)

Then, they looked again in 2022 about the consultancy fees and third-party payments to their own companies - marketing and brand services, I believe. This was found to be legitimate start-up costs.

How about stopping treatments that were never meant to be provided on the NHS ?

Fuckingfuming1 · 16/08/2023 17:11

And for you. I’ve got absolutely no issue with you taking it for a limited amount of time. But let’s not try and fall ourselves. There are plenty that have not paid in for 44 years and will take out for more than 44 years.

If you haven’t paid in for 35 years, you won’t get full state pension. If you’ve paid in for between 10 and 34 years you’ll get a reduced pension based on contributions. If you’ve not paid in for at least 10 years you get nothing. Simple.

Why do you think the state pension age has increased? So more people will die before they can claim it and the state is forced to cough up....

Bonbonbonbonbons · 16/08/2023 20:34

Absolute shame on her. I knew from the start it wasn’t all it was painted to be and her awfully cringey display at Wimbledon a couple of years ago. She really does have an overinflated idea of her own self importance.

Spoons is not just an NHS thing. In every bloody office I've ever worked in, the teaspoons have legs.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 16/08/2023 21:11

I can't find the teaspoons in my own home and I'm pretty sure no-one here is using heroin...

HiHoHiHoltsOffToWorkWeGo · 16/08/2023 21:40

Grifter.

The whole thing gave me the ick at the time - primarily because the NHS is not a charity and should be adequately funded by our taxes - but of course I was shouted down at the time.

She has a background in brand management and saw her father as a project. I don't think the old guy saw it coming; I feel a bit sorry for him any memory of him is overshadowed by his grifting daughter.

Towdalinenow · 17/08/2023 08:42

I have never seen a teaspoon in an NHS kitchen! I think yoghurt pots are responsible (the spoons end up in the bin).

BIossomtoes · 17/08/2023 08:51

I thought everyone who’s ever worked in the NHS knew you had to have your own jealously guarded teaspoon.

I always hated the cult of NHS worship (I've hidden my uniform - before I stopped wearing it cos they're optional in my team - before going past some of the more wanky examples of NHS performative worship cos it was so cringe)... and the Captain Sir Tom thing was bizarre when it happened (but kind of chalked down to the fact the world went fucking batshit insane) and the family were clearly on the grift pretty damned early on.

However - the doing multiple people's jobs thing is getting ridiculous in the NHS. My team is the most fantastic, supportive group of people I could ever meet and I am incredibly lucky with the role I landed and how I'm trusted to do my job, manage my diary etc (especially as a B5/6)... but we can't recruit - and you DO end up covering the gaps so people get seen and don't fall through the cracks (especially sorting out the mess post-covid - I work with a lot of people who've fallen very deeply into crisis as a consequence of the lockdowns and services being closed, and struggling to process all the changes and loss of routine etc). It took 5 months for anyone higher up to realise that, after I was promoted, I was still doing my original job as well as my new job because if I didn't - it wasn't going to get done. As a still fairly new clinician - I was holding together half the fucking county community caseload - between annual leave and people working part time, there were days when I was completely the only cover for massive areas of service and some very complex cases. That is bloody nuts - and I can understand why that level of expectation scares some of my peers away and they went for a "safer" feeling option of working in a clinic just churning through the caseload. I bloody love my job, love my client base and apparently I'm pretty damned good at it (it's one of those areas of work you either click with or find completely not your cup of tea) - but I got very close to burnout quite recently and one of the work patches I cover has a reputation as being one unable to hang onto my area of clinical staff for more than about a year just because of the intensity of the caseload and how hard going it is. Thankfully my Trust and my team really do try to prioritise keeping staff within the organisation once they recruit them so I feel supported.

The NHS can't afford to keep using staff in the same way you would disposable PPE - that means that culturally things need to change in terms of how they're supported and valued - and hell, things like tea and coffee might seem small - but do go some of the way towards that... however we're meant to have tea and coffee provided in all our bases (which is something they introduced to help with cost of living) and for some reason, as usual, the little offices community teams work out of miss out on this one and get nada - so I have my little tuppaware thing, with fold-up teaspoon that I end up carting around half the county.

We've now had a trust-wide "no nice branded stationery" ban imposed on us. Along with our printing in black and white only policy which always amuses me as some comedian decided to name it "Thrifty Shades of Grey"
