to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Greensleeves · 11/08/2023 18:09

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

Scallops are vegan?

A potato scallop. Thick piece of potato in vegan batter. Yes, vegan.

According to google

"Simply put, no – scallops aren't suitable for vegans as they're a living part of the animal kingdom. Although there might be some arguments that their lack of a central nervous system stops them from feeling pain in the same way as mammals, this still doesn't mean that they're suitable for vegans."

Laurdo · 11/08/2023 18:40

Personally I find the portion sizes of most places too big. I couldn't tell you the last time I had a chippy but DH and I would definitely share a portion of chips.

We tend to order Indian takeaway rather than a chippy and will share a curry. Neither of us would manage one each.

I don't think it's necessarily greedy, you just have big appetites.

Hummingbird89 · 11/08/2023 18:40

Depends on the chippy! My local chippy the portions of chips are huge, enough for me and my husband and bottomless pit teenage son, when we’re having fish/pie/whatever. We do have butties too though.
other chippies I’ve been, will serve a fish supper in a tray/box-I could easily polish that off on my own.

notsurewherenotsurewhy · 11/08/2023 18:41

I'm in London which maybe increases the odds of (often accidentally) vegan food, including chips, vs undoubtedly more 'proper' chippies elsewhere. Beef dripping isn't suitable for lots of people round here for various reasons, including vegetarianism but also other religions and cultures. Makes life convenient.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 11/08/2023 18:41

What? So not scallops, then.

They’re called scallops here. Written on the menu board at the chip shop 🤷🏻‍♀️

GameOverBoys · 11/08/2023 18:41

What someone eats is their own business. If you are sharing food maybe it’s best to be a bit mindful that you don’t eat too much but when you buy what you want then you are fully entitled to eat what you like.

Did you read the reply? Potato scallops are entirely different things to seafood scallops. It’s literally a slice of battered potato 😂

Hawkins009 · 11/08/2023 18:41

Also

"Scallops are a type of mollusk, which is a category of invertebrate animals that includes clams, oysters, and mussels. Mollusks are typically not considered vegetarian because they are animals."

From google

@Hawkins009 I’ve explained but honestly you post such weird stuff on threadI can’t be arsed with you. 🙃

Oh pickles I say,
My apologies I made a pickle with that one.

But Google is talking about the sea food scallop and the poster is talking aboutvthe potato scallop. Potatoes are vegan.

Fish can take a while to fry so I have sausage and chips while I’m waiting for my fish and chips.

I like your style!

How is it weird when usually all my posts and comments are related to the original op and or another posters comment

Usually I try to help the thread with extra info from google that's usually about the original op

In this case I made a pickle.

Just off to get fish & chip supper for me & DS1's girlfriend. I'll be getting 2 x cod, 2 x mushy peas & we'll share a portion of chips. Yum!

YABU mushy peas have no place with any meal! Fish & chips need a pickled onion!

And the photos begin...told you OP. 😂

I was just laughing as I read your comment 😂. Thing is though I've no idea how my portion compares to other fish and chips shops throughout the UK absolutely no idea. My "MASSIVE CHIP" to feed the 5,000 could be Tiny compared to your massive chip. I'm autistic though, and my brain can only compare in weights and quantities. I find sentences like "big portion" subjective and meaningless. 🤷‍♂️

PurpleSteak · 11/08/2023 18:44

Phew potato scallops. Surely no one is deep frying actual scallops in chippy batter? 😆

Your inlaws share a small fish? 😲

MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women

What if you want steak? 😂

They sound odd. Ignore their comments.

If you want steak, then you're weird and unfeminine and heading for an early grave Grin

Seriously, I really struggle to eat in front of her. I can feel her watching me. As a pp pointed out, I'm being a hypocrite because I've referenced her eating habits on this thread in an equally critical way...but in my defence I would never make a judgemental comment or try to make her feel uncomfortable about her choices while she's eating. I tense up just looking at the menu when we're eating with her, I know she's gearing up to have her say. If I order something like a salad she will congratulate me in front of everyone!

For an Indian takeaway, we’ll always order two main portions, rice (or we’ll make some decent Basmati at home if we’re feeling tight) and order a few sides. It easily lasts two days including a snack for lunch. Curry often tastes just as good/better the following day, we do love an Indian.

Strange things happen in different parts of the country.

Badhairday101 · 11/08/2023 18:46

This has made me really want a chippy tea now.

SocksAndTheCity · 11/08/2023 18:46

Medium haddock and chips with mushy peas, curry sauce, two pickled eggs and a can of Irn Bru for me 😊

I'd rather go without than eat cod.

Bababear987 · 11/08/2023 18:46

Tbf yes it is greedy cause obviously that's a lot more food than needed and if you finish that portion you likely kept eating even when you weren't hungry anymore, in fact most people would be stuffed after that. So eating to the point of feeling full and stuffed is greedy yes

.... That being said theres nothing wrong with greediness once in a while. I stuffed my face with chippy last night and it was glorious but I knew I was being greedy as I ate it

Prescottdanni123 · 11/08/2023 18:47

Large cod, full portion of chips and scraps.
