to think it isn't greedy to eat a whole fish, portion of chips and mushy peas with bread and butter?

Opinions vary wildly in our family; DH and DS2 will happily eat a large portion of chips with a fish, or a pie and a fishcake, or a fishcake and a jumbo battered sausage. I will eat a fishcake and 2/3 of a portion of chips, but I like bread and butter to make chip butties as well. In-laws think we are all insanely greedy and will split a small fish between them and a handful of chips each. If they have mushy peas, they will eat commensurately fewer chips because peas are incredibly filling.

What's your chippy order? And do you think a portion of chips is designed to be shared, or is an expected portion for one person?

We definitely share chips here but fish etc is per person.

MsChatterbox · 11/08/2023 18:30

I had fish and chips yesterday and myself and my two (young) children couldn't finish 1 large portion of fish and chips. If my husband was eating as well we would probably have needed more though.

WhateverMate · 11/08/2023 18:31

Obviously a portion of chips (or portion of anything) is for one person, because otherwise what are you supposed to do if you are ordering just for yourself? Throw half of it away?!

Well if you can't eat it all and you can't reheat it, what else can you do except throw it away?

I've reheated chip shop chips before, and eaten them.

bellac11 · 11/08/2023 18:33

In my younger days I could snaffle that up easily.

As I got older even though I was still very overweight, my appetite did decrease and you just cant fit as much in, its part of aging. My partner is also finding the same despite being a big fan of double pie and mash at the pie and mash shop

Ive now had WLS and so of course cant fit all that in.

Its not greedy at all, its just a dinner

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 11/08/2023 18:33

I'm not a teeny tiny salad person firstly. I eat until I'm full, I hate that feeling sick because you've eaten so much. My mum always pushes her eating, and for years I've listened to her complaining about feeling sick because she ate too much and making noises etc. So that's my background and why I stop eating when full.

This is the portion I get and at least half of it comes home and is eaten over the next day or two. If I had bread, I could eat two slices of bread made into chip sandwiches, and would bring the rest home in a box. (one layer of chips). I wouldnt judge others though.

Are chip shop chips vegan? Doesn't everything go in the same oil?

I’m vegan and our local chip shop cooks the chips separate to the fish in vegetable oil. They use vegan batter for scallops, mushrooms etc so they’re ok for vegans here too.

Georgyporky · 11/08/2023 18:35

Not all "portions" are equal. Depends on weight of components.

SomewhereWithSomeone · 11/08/2023 18:35

And the photos begin...told you OP. 😂

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 11/08/2023 18:35

I think a lot also depends on the chippy.

Here three fish and two chips will do me, DH, MIL and DC 13, 10 and 7. I have no idea how they make any profit with their portion sizes! (And I’m a fatty - no 3 chips and declaring myself full here!)

However at BIL’s fish and chips, a side and bread & butter is one adult meal.

MaybeSmaller · 11/08/2023 18:35

Based on the OP I'm talking more about the expectation when buying it.

A "portion" is intended for one person (whether they eat all of it, or not), just as a Tesco meal deal is intended to be a lunch for a single individual and not to be shared between me, my boss, and his cat.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 11/08/2023 18:36

Scallops are vegan?

BarryK3nt · 11/08/2023 18:36

Sounds a bit greedy, you’ll be stretching your stomach eating all that.

SaltyCrisps · 11/08/2023 18:36

I've not had fish and chips for ages as we don't have them out here 😢

However, when I get them I have a fish, a portion of chips and maybe some peas. I'll generally eat all of the fish, all of the peas and most of the chips.

I don't do sharing my chips... 😳😬

So the scallops go in the vegan batter?????
Anyone told them scallops are animals?

Caribun · 11/08/2023 18:37

We get one large fish and chips between two of us, with a small mushy peas each (it has to be two small and not one large, don't ask me why!), a curry sauce for me and a round of bread and butter. Then there will be leftover chips for the toddler as a treat.

Paintedtoenail · 11/08/2023 18:37

No peas and only a little bit of bread for me .

My order will be a large cod and medium chips, curry sauce and two cans of Coke Zero. Oh and a picked onion please.

Thank you in advance 😂

Potato scallops rather than fishy scallops I’d assume if they’re vegan

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 11/08/2023 18:38

Soubriquet · 11/08/2023 18:19

You wouldn’t be able to eat the chips at my favourite chip shop. They are cooked in beef dripping

You know I Inwardly wonder how many chippies make vegan chips. I'm in Belfast though but I suspect its dripping
My veggie husband won't touch them at all. Think it's just the unknown and he'd much rather have Chinese food 😁

DelilahBucket · 11/08/2023 18:38

I do like adding a chip and curry sauce butty to my fish and chip meal, but, I can't eat a full sized portion as it is without adding bread into the mix. We had a fantastic chippy that did a kids portion and even that was sometimes too much. And I can eat! I am definitely not an under eater by any stretch of the imagination!
DH would quite happily eat all the fish and chips and bread and dessert. He has an active job!
At the end of the day, as long as you have a balanced diet and are a healthy weight, it doesn't really matter.

SaltyCrisps · 11/08/2023 18:39

Potato scallops...

What? So not scallops, then. Grin

SomewhereWithSomeone · 11/08/2023 18:39

A potato scallop. Thick piece of potato in vegan batter. Yes, vegan.

LizzieSiddal · 11/08/2023 18:39

Dh and I share a small portion of chips and then have a fish each, plus curry sauce and mushy peas. There’s no way we could eat a portion of chips each,
pmus bread and butter. However maybe our gosh and chips hope has bigger portions than yours. It’s very difficult to compare!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 11/08/2023 18:39

Your inlaws share a small fish? 😲

MIL is the sort of person who serves steak for the men and salmon for the women

What if you want steak? 😂

They sound odd. Ignore their comments.
