when she turned up at the hospital after 3 days, I wonder why they did not check her over - a wellness check- unless she refused? ie make sure all the placenta has been passed. Remaining placenta can cause infections.

When a baby was abandoned at Dubai airport, the police (?) made every woman get off the plane and be vaginally examined to see if they had recently given birth.
Surely that would have helped yoga mum?

I realise there are way more questions than answers to this story.

Pandaflop · 13/08/2023 08:22

If there's anything online the media will have been aware of it before they decided to print the original story, they have to be careful what they print and when though.

But why? This is not a power couple, they wont have a big legal team behind them, and wont be suing anyone anytime soon.

Might it be because there is a criminal investigation ongoing?

I would have expected at least something dripping with hints in the Mail.

madeofwaxlarry · 13/08/2023 09:17

I'm sure they would have offered to examine her.

That story about Dubai though! WTAF. I hope the women were compensated and whoever was in charge held to account

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 13/08/2023 09:32

This is such a good example of white privilege. No thought beforehand just assumed that someone, somehow will sort everything out. As someone else said, imagine doing something similar with countries around the North Sea!

“We flew into Norway to give birth in a fjord, didn’t like the weather so sailed to Sweden. Gave birth mid journey but didn’t radio it in. Turned up in Sweden to register the birth but they have rules. So then sailed to the UK and now no-one is helping us!”

I lived overseas when I had my first and has to return to the UK for the birth. You needed to fly back by 34 weeks and then get onto the paperwork straight away to fly out again with a baby at 6 weeks old. Photo had to be taken as soon as possible (thank you bounty), birth registered and passport applied for all within the first few days.

So a minimum expected UK stay of 12 weeks.

This was never going to be a quick fly in, pop out a sprog and fly back home - only away for a few weeks! The whole thing is nonsense.

I love this thread. It has kept me entertained all night on a very uncomfortable bed whilst we're away for the weekend.

Very fishy indeed. Curious to see if/how it is resolved. Loving the super sleuths!

Totally stealing the "seesaw" expression,

Waiting for the ITV drama in 15 years or so

Catsmere · 13/08/2023 09:39

Stupid criminals or "merely" criminally stupid? 🤔

BoobsOnTheMoon · 13/08/2023 09:49

The thing that I can't work out though, is if the whole "birth on the beach" was in any way about Instagram etc, where are the mothers social media profiles? If she is the type to pull such a fucking idiotic stunt for the likes, you'd expect her to already have a prolific social media presence but...she doesn't...?

It was Doha not Dubai - I realise it’s all Somut Forrin, but not getting basic facts right lowers the validity of the whole thread.

Not fit to be parents. Utterly selfish. Social Services should be waiting for them when they land back in the UK.

I was thinking the same

I think it is more “British passport holder privilege” (and I have seen similar attitudes from Americans, Canadians, Germans etc).

Nobody from a developing country would expect to be able to swan from country to country with an undocumented newborn, and then pitch a fit that “these funny foreigners refuse to let us break the law!”

I suspect most black Britons are used to being racially profiled by immigration, and are probably a bit more cautious about pissing off local law enforcement. And nobody post-Windrush would be blasé about establishing entitlement to Caribbean Vs British citizenship. This particular total blind spot about immigration is a white thing.

I’m a bit surprised Iuliia is so clueless, but perhaps her family migrated when she was a child and she didn’t appreciate the hoops her parents had to jump through.

Normally I'd agree, but it does have a whiff of expecting the islands of the Carribbean to have less rigorous protocol and bureaucracy around normal life events like birth.

It sounds like they expected to rock up and get what they wanted immediately and one-up the system because they are British and therefore system would be more lenient for them and somehow laxer due to it being a nation of lesser economical status, and I'm afraid I very much think an ethnic couple would not have that world view.

No way I'd rock up to Ivory Coast say, with a baby in tow 3 days after giving birth and expect a birth certificate to be issued without any hoop jumping expected.

No but the assumption that someone else will clear up their mess is! Or maybe British Passport assumption, that somehow all the problems will just magically disappear. This is a clear case of fuck around - find out.

They are moaning about being abandoned! When they clearly haven’t been, the consulate is providing assistance, this doesn’t mean there is a magic wand.

There is a Facebook profile of a matching name who is a trainer and athlete, into Alkali water therapy something something bollocks, from Freetown, USA 🙄 but living in Manchester.

I have added him as a friend (from my fake account of course that I use for spying on people). If they're desperate for money they might accept the request in the hope I'm a fellow nutjob wanting some alkaline water therapy who will pay handsomely.

You really are invested. 😄

If she wanted to give birth on a beach, she would have done. They arrived in March, she gave birth at end of April, then they appeared on St Lucia three days later.

The travel time between Martinique and St Lucia is four hours. Even if they only set sail when her waters broke, they had ample time to get to St Lucia and get ashore if she actually wanted to do that.

The plan was clearly always to have the baby at sea (or wherever they had it - it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the baby was born on dry land somewhere else, with assistance, and they just headed to St Lucia 3 days later).

I totally agree. There's an arrogance about their assumption that the system would bend over backwards for them and that the UK Government would bail them out. As you pointed out, I can't seem them trying this in a range of other countries, it seems they thought the St Lucian's are a soft touch and would meet their demands without question.

Yes exactly - this was never about a birth on a beach was it? But then what is the real motivation here... Freeman bullshit sounds likely but I mean WTAF, this is perhaps the most bonkers thing I've seen in the pursuit of Freeman bullshit!

Did it occur to them that by appearing in this ridiculous article they are making complete fools of themselves? No one has a shred of sympathy for THEM, the baby ,yes, but 2 idiotic people who can't even Google the rules re giving birth and registering that birth in another country don't elicit any sympathy.

She's a yoga teacher. He's a fitness coach. If they're also into freeman of the land/alkaline water therapy/freebirth/waves natural painkiller/no antenatal care/the dolphins will save me shenanigans you often find these complete fruit loops often surround themselves with similarly minded folk, because if they venture into normal conversational society they get eyerolled at too much. Its also how anti-vaccers and flat-earthers blinker themselves. They're both teachers of some sort, so in their closed world of falafel and hesian hippy shit they actually have people looking up to them. They're actually admired and respected. They wouldn't consider that they might be considered irresponsible by the rest of the normal, complying don't-want-a-dolphin-for-a-midwife population.

The only reason I have doubts about the Freeman of the Land stuff, is that he isn’t banging on about it to anyone who’ll listen/trying to get himself in front of a judge to tell them he only follows Maritime Law.

If you meet a Freeman, they don’t usually leave you in any doubt. You usually have trouble shutting them up.

@Saschka “Even if they only set sail when her waters broke, they had ample time to get to St Lucia and get ashore if she actually wanted to do that. “

I don’t think that’s certain. When my waters broke, I wanted to push, there and then. That baby (my first and seconds are often quicker) was in my arms 2 hours later. For that 2 hours, I was labouring - and I would have wanted my husband to be with me for that, not sailing a boat! Especially if the practical set up meant I’d have been below deck so not even with him.

My contractions had only start 1 hour before. My husband was getting all stressy and telling me I had to get in the car. I couldn’t - I had to wait out each wave before walking again. Same at the hospital. I had several contractions leaning against the hospital corridor wall, just metres from my delivery suite. Unless paving husband, the midwife just calmly waited - she knew I couldn’t walk at the same time.

No matter how much I wanted a beach birth, if my own particular labour (from first contractions to waters breaking) had started on that boat - that’s where baby would have been born!

They are so losing their boat rental cleaning deposit though 🤣

Yep I had thought about that too! Yuck! And then they stayed in this same blood-soaked cabin for three days? Really??

Yacht cabins are pretty small. Aside from anything else, the smell of stale blood would have been overpowering given the heat and humidity.

I have no words - woman now stranded after wanting to give birth in St Lucia (on the beach...)
