AIBU to leave my wedding rings at home for holiday?

Am I being over cautious by not bringing my wedding rings on holiday? DH is taking his. We have had 2 sun + sea holidays since getting married and I brought a fake set on both trips. I bring my real rings on other breaks where I know I won't be swimming.

I'm mostly curious as to what others do. I just figure on our upcoming holiday I would just have to find somewhere to store them on holiday as we plan on being in the pool every day so easier not to take them. DH has a simple band which can be hit and won't come off his finger.

YABU - wear your wedding ring on holiday
YANBU - too big a risk of losing it in the sea or breaking a diamond off in the pool

I take fake jewellery when I go on holiday - but keep real wedding ring. Mine is a plain band though, no stones and I dont take it off to go swimming

I take mine but always leave them in the hotel safe during the day. I wouldn't book a hotel that didn't have a safe. For me it's not just swimming in my jewellery, it's the thought of sun tan lotion and sand etc.

I also have my engagement ring checked once a year at the jeweller we bought it from to check that the claws etc are all perfect etc. I've never worried about losing a diamond or breaking it in the pool.

CR7 · 11/08/2023 09:26

Ps I don't think you're unreasonable though. I think it also depends on the jewellery you wear : value etc

Ponoka7 · 11/08/2023 09:28

The only time I took mine was in North Africa, many years ago. I wouldn't bother now because of a change in attitude of cohabiting. I and my DD have lost jewelry on holiday and it just ruins the experience.

Saisong · 11/08/2023 09:28

I do take them, but don't wear them in the pool - I put them inside a balled up pair of socks with the rest of my underwear if I have to leave them in the hotel room.
The other thing you can do if you don't want to take off is secure then on your finger with some micropore tape while swimming.

ConnieTucker · 11/08/2023 09:31

I also have always had a plain band inexpensive wedding ring for holidays

OwlBabiesAreCute · 11/08/2023 09:33

I just wear mine all the time!

TheBirdintheCave · 11/08/2023 09:34

If you know you're going to be swimming or at the beach a lot then sure I think it's a good idea to leave them at home. I went to Greece with friends just after getting engaged and took a cheaper ring with me as I was so terrified of losing the real one.

Nowadays the jewellery always comes with me as we holiday in cities but if we do a beach day then I leave anything expensive in the apartment.

MatildaTheCat · 11/08/2023 09:35

Gosh it’s never occurred to me to take mine off. I have a plain band plus a small row of diamonds engagement ring and a much more valuable eternity ring and I only take them off if my fingers swell. I swim a few times a week as well. Married 34 years.

Are all of you wearing your rings very loose?

Peachespeachesohpeaches · 11/08/2023 09:36

I don't wear my engagement ring anymore but wear my wedding ring every day regardless of what I'm doing, it's only a plain band though and I had to take it off with washing up liquid last time I needed to remove it! DH takes his off to swim so would leave in the safe if we're having a pool day.

ChimneyPot · 11/08/2023 09:38

Mine are included for “all risks” on my house insurance so wear them everywhere.

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 11/08/2023 09:40

What's with the 'fakes'? Are you worried ppl won't know you're married without a ring and talk to you? 🤣🤣🤣

petitdonkey · 11/08/2023 09:41

I’ve always worn mine on holiday- in the sea and pool. They just wouldn’t come off that easily. I once left my engagement ring at home because we were going somewhere that had experienced robberies of tourists but I wear it regularly in london which is probably equally risky!

ToughFuss · 11/08/2023 09:41

I think either option is fine really. I personally never take my wedding ring off ever and generally don’t take my engagement ring off either for normal holidays but I did leave it at home when we went backpacking on the other side of the world for a few months for our honeymoon, seemed an unnecessary risk given the amount of surfing, diving, horse riding, bungee jumping, ATV/go-karting etc etc (all that pre-kids fun stuff!) we did. I also don’t wear my engagement ring when we go skiing, it feels weird under gloves and I worry about accidentally pulling it off with the glove on a mountain or something.

cruffinsmuffin · 11/08/2023 09:42

I take fake rings on holiday because I feel naked without my wedding / engagement rings, I like having something there now and it feels weird not too.

But I also don't want to be walking around with £££ on my finger at the beach / pool / holiday in general. My next holiday will be mid 30s with lots of water involved, I'm not splashing around with a house deposit on my finger 😂

yogasaurus · 11/08/2023 09:44

I don’t ever take mine off

YaWeeFurryBastard · 11/08/2023 09:44

Why? My engagement ring is worth 5 figures and I wear it all the time on holiday, including in the pool. It’s platinum and diamond so very hardy and is also fully insured. The only time I really take it off is if we’re somewhere particularly dangerous like outside a resort in Jamaica or Africa.

FloopyZebra · 11/08/2023 09:47

I have a plain wedding band and I never take it off!

Girasoli · 11/08/2023 09:47

I only take mine off if I'm making pastry.
Mine's not so big that I'd worry about anyone stealing it.

Mine is also platinum and diamond - I know it's super hardy hence why it was picked, also fully insure. But I'm also going to water parks / doing water sports - if I was just planning on floating in a swimming pool it might be different, but it's too risky to wear something so precious to me in a situation like that imo, I don't want to have to make use of the insurance because I took a risk wearing it white water rafting!

I'd rather leave it in the safe at home than the safe in the hotel as well, I trust my home safe and house sitting family member way more than the hotel one (although I'm sure they wouldn't risk it!).

toomuchlaundry · 11/08/2023 09:49

I wear my wedding ring all the time as just a plain band, but don’t tend to take my engagement ring in holiday. When I first got it a friend who used to work in a jewellery shop told me to never wear the ring in bed or when showering as those are the times you are most likely to catch the claws on the ring. I have followed that advice and so not wanting to leave my ring in a hotel room I don’t tend to take it with me

After 25 years of marriage, it doesnt feel right not to have a ring on that finger

Fireyflies · 11/08/2023 09:50

Mine never slips off so I don't worry about swimming etc. When going to a country with higher crime rate I have swapped it for a version I bought for £1.99 on eBay. Looks like a wedding ring but I don't need to worry about anyone trying to steel it.

ManateeFair · 11/08/2023 09:50

I'm not married but it would never occur to me to take my jewellery off for a holiday or swap it for fakes. I just wear mine all the time.

Yes, I'm wondering about this too! I can understand why someone might not want to take valuable jewellery away with them but I'm not really seeing why you'd need to wear fakes instead.
