AIBU to leave my wedding rings at home for holiday?

Am I being over cautious by not bringing my wedding rings on holiday? DH is taking his. We have had 2 sun + sea holidays since getting married and I brought a fake set on both trips. I bring my real rings on other breaks where I know I won't be swimming.

I'm mostly curious as to what others do. I just figure on our upcoming holiday I would just have to find somewhere to store them on holiday as we plan on being in the pool every day so easier not to take them. DH has a simple band which can be hit and won't come off his finger.

YABU - wear your wedding ring on holiday
YANBU - too big a risk of losing it in the sea or breaking a diamond off in the pool

After 25 years of marriage, it doesnt feel right not to have a ring on that finger

Nearly 20 years and never worn one. Feeling relieved I’ve never had to ponder this issue! 😂

Q2C4 · 11/08/2023 10:22

One of my colleagues left hers at home when she went away & was burgled! Lost the lot.

vitahelp · 11/08/2023 10:23

I'm confused by this but can see it is a common thing based on PP replies. What is it you are worried might happen to them on holiday? I wore mine on a beach type holiday recently, there was no chance of them coming off since they fit well anyway but my fingers swell a bit on holiday so they go quite tight.
I'd be more nervous leaving things like this at home in case we were robbed.

mum11970 · 11/08/2023 10:24

Wear mine all the time but they’re not expensive so it isn’t really an issue.

ActDottie · 11/08/2023 10:28

I never take mine off so they come on holiday too!

swimminginthesun · 11/08/2023 10:30

Nothing unreasonable about it. They are your rings so it’s up to you. I think it’s a bit weird buying a “fake” set though. Either wear them or don’t. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve been married 10 years. I take my engagement ring off for work because I’m not allowed to wear it there. Otherwise I wear both rings all the time including shower, beach, pool swimming, outdoor swimming, hiking… never an issue. Although maybe I’ve been incredibly careless and just got lucky.

illiterato · 11/08/2023 10:34

Quite often don’t wear them at home (take them off for running/ gym/ gardening etc) and tend to leave them at home when on holiday as i tend not to wear them when at the beach/ pool/ when skiing and it’s easy to lose track of them.

Slushynana · 11/08/2023 10:35

I leave mine at home after losing my wedding ring in Antigua, don’t know how I lost it, one minute it seemed to be on my finger, the next it wasn’t there, I know I could have lost it anywhere but always leave my new ring at home now. Having to get a new one didn’t seem the same😢

whoruntheworldgirls · 11/08/2023 10:38

Always leave all jewellery at home for holidays. Rings because i snorkel a lot plus in the heat my fingers sometimes swell, don't want them getting stuck.

smartiesneberhadtheanswer · 11/08/2023 09:40

What's with the 'fakes'? Are you worried ppl won't know you're married without a ring and talk to you? 🤣🤣🤣

This. It all sounds a bit nuts to me. I’ve never even taken mine off.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/08/2023 10:41

It’s never occurred to me.

RobotsWillRule · 11/08/2023 10:42

If they fit properly you don't need to take them off for swimming.

GoingGoingUp · 11/08/2023 10:43

My engagement ring is very valuable so whether or not I take it depends on where we are going and what we will be doing. When I leave it behind, I usually wear the token ring DH used to propose with.

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 11/08/2023 10:47

I would personally leave mine at home if they’re so sentimental or expensive.

Why take the risk of losing it in the sea, you’ll still be married without the ring.

I wouldn’t bother with a fake one either.

vibecheck · 11/08/2023 10:48

On my honeymoon last year my brand new wedding ring flew off my finger whilst I dried off from the pool and I had about 15 different hotel guests and staff crawling round looking for it - thankfully someone found it under their lounger a few minutes later! It was a tense few minutes and I have never ever worn my rings to swim in again 😱

OwlBabiesAreCute · 11/08/2023 09:33

I just wear mine all the time!

Me too. Married 32 years this year.

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 11/08/2023 10:52

I take my rings off everyday as I can't sleep in any jewellery and regularly don't put them on because I've forgotten. Often leave them behind if we go away and know there will be swimming, beach etc. Why would I need "stunt" rings, is a man likely to throw himself at me while I'm away with my husband and two tweens? Does this happen to unmarried women?! Seems insane to have dummy rings to me, but then my wedding and engagement rings did cost about four quid combined.

cruffinsmuffin · 11/08/2023 10:56

@DistantSkye

But I didn't said what type of house 😉 could be a shack in the mountains or a palace in a city - will never know 😂

Honestly not even a humble brag but reading it back I see what you see 😂 I was trying to quantify why I'm more risk averse with them, partly cash value, partly sentimental - I'd hate to have to replace them because even though the £££ would be the same, the actual rings wouldn't be.

Ohpleeeease · 11/08/2023 10:59

I feel like a dinosaur. I have been wearing my wedding ring (it’s a Russian band so three rings really) for 40 odd years. It never comes off, never will. I think it may have been taped over for surgery but certainly wasn’t removed.

I don’t have an engagement ring so never had that dilemma.

timegoingtooquickly · 11/08/2023 11:00

yogasaurus · 11/08/2023 09:44

I don’t ever take mine off

Me neither but mine is just a cheap gold band as I'm not into expensive jewellery.

Warringahvoter · 11/08/2023 11:03

Wow. I didn’t realise that this was a dilemma. I’ve been married for 29 years. We live by the beach so I swim all the time. I’ve been on holiday in Africa, South America and Asia as well as a 12 month camping trip around Australia. And the only times I’ve taken them off is for a Caesar when my children were born.

mynewusername2023 · 11/08/2023 11:05

All the jewellery I wear on holiday is fake apart from my plain band wedding ring. Even though everything is covered by insurance, I'd be heartbroken to lose it.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 11/08/2023 11:06

I had no idea this was a thing! Mine are fairly modest so probably not much different from the ones people are having as fakes 😂 I just wear mine all the time unless I have a flare-up of eczema when I leave them off for a while. They are loose enough to come off easily but not so loose they'd fall off while swimming or anyway . They do have stones but embedded/secure so not worried about losing them. They've lasted 19years so far

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 11/08/2023 11:07

I've never taken mine off 🤷‍♀️

I also don't understand the point of wearing fake jewellery 😂

OsirisservesAnubis · 11/08/2023 11:16

I dont generally wear rings as I find them annoying, but when I do have them on I keep them on regardless of what I'm doing (unless it's a safety issue). I've definitely swam in the sea and a pool with them on and wouldn't think twice about it.
