AIBU to leave my wedding rings at home for holiday?

Am I being over cautious by not bringing my wedding rings on holiday? DH is taking his. We have had 2 sun + sea holidays since getting married and I brought a fake set on both trips. I bring my real rings on other breaks where I know I won't be swimming.

I'm mostly curious as to what others do. I just figure on our upcoming holiday I would just have to find somewhere to store them on holiday as we plan on being in the pool every day so easier not to take them. DH has a simple band which can be hit and won't come off his finger.

YABU - wear your wedding ring on holiday
YANBU - too big a risk of losing it in the sea or breaking a diamond off in the pool

What's with the 'fakes'? Are you worried ppl won't know you're married without a ring and talk to you? 🤣🤣🤣

Yeah this seems a bit weird to me. Can you not cope with people not knowing you're married?

I feel like a load has fallen from me since no longer wearing a wedding ring!

As someone who never wears a wedding ring I am puzzled about this.

People who never take them off - what do you think will happen if you do?
Is it just so that you can say "I've never taken them off" or do you think something bad will happen?
Those who wear fake ones - why? Do you think people judge you if you are not wearing a ring? Do you judge others?

I wear mine all the time because otherwise I'd lose it. Is as simple as that.

Chickenwing2 · 11/08/2023 13:13

Mine has been on my finger since I got married. Same with my engagement ring.

Lemonyfuckit · 11/08/2023 13:15

I leave my engagement ring in the hotel safe if I'm going to be at the pool / beach, but do wear my wedding ring for swimming, however thinking about it maybe I might start leaving my engagement ring at home full stop - the stone came from a ring that was my grandmother's (and in turn had been passed down to her) so I would be devastated to lose it. And whilst my wedding ring is plain maybe I'll get a very cheap band and just start wearing that on holiday as I wouldn't want to lose the 'actual' wedding ring.

The only time I really take it off is if we’re somewhere particularly dangerous like outside a resort in Jamaica or Africa

Are you quite aware of what that statement sounds like?

It sounds like these are places where tourists are at increased risk of violent robberies, which is the truth. Stop trying to take offence where none is meant or are you suggesting someone should merrily prance round Johannesburg decked out in diamonds?

Halo8 · 11/08/2023 13:47

One of my relatives had their wedding and engagement rings stolen on holiday when they had taken them off. I don’t wear one anyway, but this would put me off tbh.

YoBeaches · 11/08/2023 13:49

I just wear mine all the time. the very action of taking them on and off regularly increases the risk of them being lost or stolen.

Have them cleaned once a year to keep the sparkle.

AlannaOfTrebond · 11/08/2023 13:59

I take mine off for some holidays and leave them at home.

A lot of my holidays involve boats, and wearing rings whilst messing around with ropes and anchor chains is not my idea of safe. I have absolutely no desire to deglove my finger... They are also a bit loose as I've lost weight since I got married and I can't enjoy swimming when I can feel them sliding around.

I wear a silicone one when I don't have my real ones on so I know I took them off on purpose and swapped them over, otherwise I look at my naked finger and panic that I've lost them!

Unless your rings don’t fit you properly AND are uninsured, I think YABU and overreacting 😶

LoobyDop · 12/08/2023 16:54

I wear my wedding ring all the time. It’s a plain band and fits pretty securely, so I’m not worried about it. But I leave my engagement ring at home, hidden. It’s too precious to me to risk, and if it was lost or stolen we’d never find a true like-for-like replacement, and it does feel a bit risky to either wear it on the beach and in the sea, or leave it in a safe or buried in a drawer. I wear my proposal ring instead- it’s cz rather than diamond, but still very pretty and obviously has the sentimental value. Plus my husband proposed while we were on holiday, so it feels appropriate.

PEARLJAM123 · 12/08/2023 17:24

I would suggest that your rings are too expensive if you feel uneasy about wearing them all the time?

I never take mine off because I have no reason to?

They fit me nicely, they're not uncomfortable and it's just easier to leave them on. I've been married five years next month and mine have been on since our wedding day.

DH doesn't wear his ring as he works in a messy/practical job and it would be too dangerous. His is in a jewellery box upstairs.

Ladyoftheknight · 12/08/2023 17:38

I wear my eternity and promise rings and leave wedding and engagement rings at home. The former 2 are plain, thin bands that fit quite tightly. They the least 2 sentimental and easiest to replace. The latter 2 have diamonds and aren't easily replaced and would be sorely missed!

If I know I'm in a dodgy area I flip my biggest stone ring around so it can't be seen! I wouldn't wear fakes though, after hearing a story of a woman having her finger partially cut off and degloved for just a cubic zirconia ring.

Kwasi · 12/08/2023 17:55

If your rings are at risk of slipping off, they’re the wrong size.

I never take mine off, although I might take my engagement ring off if I were to go somewhere dodgy, but I don’t really plan on doing that.

OwlBabiesAreCute · 11/08/2023 09:33

I just wear mine all the time!

So do I. Mine doesn't ever slip off while swimming or ever. It is quite a snug fit.

Bluebellsparklypant · 12/08/2023 17:57

I don’t take my engagement , wedding ring or watch on holidays. I have other rings I use instead as I’ve got used to wearing them & use a swim watch. I think it’s just what you feel comfortable with

myveryownelectrickitten · 12/08/2023 18:54

This thread makes me feel like I come from a parallel universe! I’m not married but I’ve never liked the feeling of rings on my hand so I never wear any. If DP and I got married it wouldn’t even occur to me to have a ring. I don’t think anyone’s ever looked at me or talked to me differently because I haven’t got a ring on? I often have DP and/or kid in tow with me so it’s if like I get chatted up!

Maybe if I did wear a ring other people would treat me differently in some magical way? Would I feel like a character out of a sixties movie being treated like a Proper Married Lady? I’m totally intrigued now!

concertgoer · 12/08/2023 19:48

I wear my wedding ring and engagement ring every day.
to be blunt I’d have to have my finger removed to get it off!! … have none of you gained any weight?!

I do also swim three times a week and it’s still perfectly in tact! … 18 years later.

do you take fake cheap husbands on your posh holidays?! & have cupboards full of best linen and crockery you don’t use?

enchantedsquirrelwood · 12/08/2023 20:09

I actually think my rings are safer on my fingers than left at home in case we have a break-in. But I don't go to dangerous countries and I don't swim in the sea. And my rings aren't even worth four figures.

LoobyDop · 12/08/2023 20:17

Yet another thread where people are bizarrely sneery about any habits different from their own.

MangoMandy · 12/08/2023 20:19

My ring is antique gold and I take it off for swimming and anything likely to damage it. Don’t bother with a stunt ring, what’s the point?

Abbimae · 12/08/2023 20:26

I have a £20 plain band for holidays. Too scared I’d lose my rings!

LisaD1 · 12/08/2023 20:28

I wear my wedding, engagement and eternity ring all the time, they never come off (married almost 20 years). I swim 3 x a week, own and ride horses. I don’t even think about them coming off.

Casperroonie · 12/08/2023 20:39

On holiday now and a few days ago I took off my rings off for fear of them coming off when swimming with my family. I have a wedding ring with stones, engagement ring and an eternity ring and never take them off normally but as I was in the pool I could just picture them coming loose.

I'll leave them home next time.

42coats · 12/08/2023 20:39

I wear one simple ring and leave my £££ jewellery at home. I hide them in very clever places that no burglar will ever find.
