AIBU to leave my wedding rings at home for holiday?

Am I being over cautious by not bringing my wedding rings on holiday? DH is taking his. We have had 2 sun + sea holidays since getting married and I brought a fake set on both trips. I bring my real rings on other breaks where I know I won't be swimming.

I'm mostly curious as to what others do. I just figure on our upcoming holiday I would just have to find somewhere to store them on holiday as we plan on being in the pool every day so easier not to take them. DH has a simple band which can be hit and won't come off his finger.

YABU - wear your wedding ring on holiday
YANBU - too big a risk of losing it in the sea or breaking a diamond off in the pool

Wedding ring is a plain gold band which I wear everywhere.

Engagement ring is often taken off for activities, and so is usually left hidden at home for holidays.

Fireyflies · 11/08/2023 09:52

People talk to me whether I have a ring on or not. But yes I do find men sometimes try and chat me to if I'm not wearing it. I prefer to have things clear from the start.

Hit?

I just wear mine all of the time-I never take them off so wouldn’t do this. It’s fine if you don’t want to though. I wouldn’t bother with a fake ring though!

DatumTarum · 11/08/2023 09:55

Why are people taking them off?

Surely more chance of loosing them that way?

(I thought this thread was going to be more salacious than it is)

Mine is also platinum and diamond - I know it's super hardy hence why it was picked, also fully insure. But I'm also going to water parks / doing water sports - if I was just planning on floating in a swimming pool it might be different, but it's too risky to wear something so precious to me in a situation like that imo, I don't want to have to make use of the insurance because I took a risk wearing it white water rafting!

I'd rather leave it in the safe at home than the safe in the hotel as well, I trust my home safe and house sitting family member way more than the hotel one (although I'm sure they wouldn't risk it!).

We also do plenty of active/water sports and travelling about, it’s never come off so far so I’m not worried!

I take mine but always leave them in the hotel safe during the day. I wouldn't book a hotel that didn't have a safe. For me it's not just swimming in my jewellery, it's the thought of sun tan lotion and sand etc.

I also have my engagement ring checked once a year at the jeweller we bought it from to check that the claws etc are all perfect etc. I've never worried about losing a diamond or breaking it in the pool.

We've been married nearly 5 years. I must do that! I think the man that made them will even check them over for free.

@smartiesneberhadtheanswer no def not worried about being chatted up I just like wearing a wedding ring. I bought the fake one for our honeymoon we went back packing for a month with all the moving around I didn't want to bring the real ones. Although we finished up in a resort for a few nights loads of people there wore rubber wedding rings

I had to take mine off last year for a day when I was having a general anaesthetic and I couldn't bare the feeling of my finger without the ring!

I leave my wedding band and engagement ring on for everything. Swimming, beach, cooking, rolling out dough, etc etc.

It had never occurred to me to take them off for anything.

My engagement ring is white gold and diamond. No idea how much it cost as DH chose it.

I wear a cheap version just because after 27 years with a ring on my finger it feels very strange not to wear something. It is more to do with sentimental value that the actual cost of the rings. I leave my actual rings at home.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 11/08/2023 09:56

I never take valuable jewelry on holiday. Not worth the risk.

Peony654 · 11/08/2023 09:58

Hilarious that people have fakes. I wear mine on holidays but they’re fairly modest, and if I’m going on a boat trip or sea swimming I’d leave in the hotel safe.

CissOff · 11/08/2023 10:00

Genuinely didn’t realise this was a ‘thing’.

I just wear mine wherever I am going. I’m far more likely to lose them taking them on and off constantly.

Every day is a school day!

CatsOnTheChair · 11/08/2023 10:01

Mine has been rafting, caving, to water parks, to theme parks. It never (very, very rarely) comes off.

sunflowerdaisyrose · 11/08/2023 10:02

I just wear mine on beach and active holidays. They don't fall off and they can be cleaned. I take them off for activities like climbing (as it's risking a nasty injury wearing them) or for things like making burgers at home.

bellsbuss · 11/08/2023 10:04

Mine never come off

DistantSkye · 11/08/2023 10:06

I generally wear mine everywhere apart from the gym. I did have to take them off this summer because it was so hot my fingers swelled up. Mine doesn't cost as much as a house deposit though 😉

I am totally intrigued by the idea of specifically buying and wearing a fake wedding ring though! Is it that important for everyone to see you're married? A bit like when people get all het up and insist on using the title Mrs?

DappledThings · 11/08/2023 10:07

Never crossed my mind. I wear mine all the time, swimming in the normal pool and ones on holiday. I didn't know this was a thing people did.

scrivette · 11/08/2023 10:11

It's never crossed my mind to take them off for anything and I wear them all the time.

Same. My wedding ring’s never left my finger in 23 years.

Bluevelvetsofa · 11/08/2023 10:14

Would you be covered for insurance if you left expensive jewellery at home whilst you were away from the house for a period of time? Maybe, if it was in a safe, perhaps.

Prinnny · 11/08/2023 10:14

I didn’t know this was a thing! I never take mine off, it fits really well so I don’t worry about it coming off, but I also always wear expensive earrings, bracelet etc, what’s the point in having nice things to sit in a box?

I don’t think I could get mine off if I wanted to
now!

Parsleymint · 11/08/2023 10:17

I've been married 30 years and seldom wore my ring for the first few years.
I deliberately didn't want to make it a superstitious thing. I remember my grandmother being upset when she had to have hers cut off due to arthritis.

I did take it and wear it occaisionally on holiday though.
Now I never wear it, not sure where it is.

Cucucucu · 11/08/2023 10:17

What sort of jewellery do you have ? Stoves shouldn’t get loose even if you swim daily . Is it fir fear of getting them robbed ? ? I’m confused
