AIBU to leave my wedding rings at home for holiday?

Am I being over cautious by not bringing my wedding rings on holiday? DH is taking his. We have had 2 sun + sea holidays since getting married and I brought a fake set on both trips. I bring my real rings on other breaks where I know I won't be swimming.

I'm mostly curious as to what others do. I just figure on our upcoming holiday I would just have to find somewhere to store them on holiday as we plan on being in the pool every day so easier not to take them. DH has a simple band which can be hit and won't come off his finger.

YABU - wear your wedding ring on holiday
YANBU - too big a risk of losing it in the sea or breaking a diamond off in the pool

We always take fake ones. My DH lost his fake one at the airport on the way to our honeymoon 😂(To be honest, as it was so cheap, it was poorly fitted, and he'd never worn a ring in his life before, so wasn't used to them, and he kept turning it). Still better he lost a £6 ring from Amazon, rather than his real ring, which is worth a lot more.

What's with the 'fakes'? Are you worried ppl won't know you're married without a ring and talk to you? 🤣🤣🤣

This. I had no idea women felt so...(something) (insecure??) without their wedding rings. What's it all about? I never wear mine at all. Don't like rings. DH doesn't have one.

canyouseethem · 11/08/2023 11:36

When on a beach holiday I leave my £££ engagement ring at home and just wear my gold wedding band.

I would rather not get the stones and setting encrusted in Ultrasun and risk getting it knocked about on paddle boards etc. It's insured but the loss or damage of something so sentimental means it's safer at home for 2 weeks.

HaddawayAndShite · 11/08/2023 11:37

My actual engagement ring and wedding ring combined probably cost less than your lot’s “fake” rings so I’ll just kept them on and worry about real problems lmao.

gogomoto · 11/08/2023 11:39

I didn't take mine off for the 20 years I was married, I swam in mine!

tigpig · 11/08/2023 11:45

Plain wedding band never comes off. That's the point of the wedding ring. I don't take my engagement or eternity rings.

Tubbyinthehottub · 11/08/2023 11:47

I leave them at home in the safe and don't wear anything. I can't stand wearing them in hot weather. Actually, since lockdown, I hardly wear them at all unless I'm going out in the evenings.

Nearly 20 years and never worn one. Feeling relieved I’ve never had to ponder this issue! 😂

44 years for me. I took it off the day after the wedding as I hate the feeling of rings and its been in the box ever since.

I don't feel insecure without a wedding ring, I like wearing rings, and would always wear a ring on each hand for an evening out or a restaurant meal in this country and would want to do so abroad too.

I am careful about what jewellery I take on holiday to some destinations and I avoid leaving anything of value unattended in the room. That means I take mainly silver and semi - precious stones, rather than gold/platinum/diamonds and things suitable to wear day and only a limited quantity.

I haven't got a specific fake lookalike of my wedding or engagement ring but I might chose to wear a ring that wasn't the original wedding or engagement ring. I expect this is what most people mean and it isn't that strange.

Mauhea · 11/08/2023 11:57

I leave mine at home when I go away, mostly because on the rare occasions I do go on holiday it's cheap booze-ups with minimal thought to insurance or overnight camping at festivals. There's pretty much zero chance of it slipping off but I can imagine how devastated I would be if something were to happen, and I just don't risk it. I've got really comfortable wearing a ring though, so I do have a few sparkly £5 etsy jobs as 'stunt rings' when I am away.

greyhairnomore · 11/08/2023 12:01

Never occurred to me to take my rings off.

messycupboard · 11/08/2023 12:08

I wear mine all the time, they could do with a clean!

The diamond fell out of my engagement ring after 20 years while I was folding washing in my bedroom, never to be seen again. So I don't think being on holiday is any bigger risk than anywhere else.

Just make sure everything is insured!

Turfwars · 11/08/2023 12:10

Mine aren't expensive and I'm not sentimental so I wear them all the time.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/08/2023 12:11

The only time I really take it off is if we’re somewhere particularly dangerous like outside a resort in Jamaica or Africa

Are you quite aware of what that statement sounds like?

saraclara · 11/08/2023 12:16

My ring is far safer on my finger then if I take it off. Reading that a pp puts hers in a rolled up sock on her hotel room nearly made me hyperventilate 😂

I can't put anything down without losing it. And 'safe places' are the worst!

pontipinemum · 11/08/2023 12:16

@Slushynana oh no! That is such a pity.

@vibecheck this is probably what I am most concerned about, me losing it, not it being stolen. I'm glad they found it! Mine gets loose when wet so slips off easy enough too.

I'm not worried about it being stolen, I'm worried about losing it in the sea! I do have insurance on both rings but wouldn't like to lose them.

It's not an insecurity thing, I just like wearing a wedding ring. I like how it looks and I like what it symbolises. The fake ring is not an expensive one at all it's completely fake from amazon.

I am in the habit of taking my rings off a good bit though. When I help DH on the farm I take them off for safety

As someone who never wears a wedding ring I am puzzled about this.

People who never take them off - what do you think will happen if you do?
Is it just so that you can say "I've never taken them off" or do you think something bad will happen?
Those who wear fake ones - why? Do you think people judge you if you are not wearing a ring? Do you judge others?

NatMoz · 11/08/2023 12:21

I have a wedding ring, engagement ring, an internity ring and a big fancy, sapphire art deco ring.

I don't wear them all at once, or even on the same fingers all the time.

I'm going camping later and just wearing my plain yellow gold wedding band. Currently on my right hand but sometimes it goes on my left hand if one or more of the other rings come out!

The fake ring is a bit weird... wouldn't your finger just go green?🤣

Pfpppl · 11/08/2023 12:33

I always take fakes on holiday. I can't stand putting sun tan lotion on wearing rings and I'd probably lose them if I kept taking them on and off. So I leave the fakes in the hotel room during the day and put them on of an evening. I like wearing jewellery and would feel strange not having something in their place.

I also take my rings off every night before bed and if I put hand cream on!

Pfpppl · 11/08/2023 12:35

My fakes are silver, no green fingers here!

Papernotplastic · 11/08/2023 12:39

There’s no harm in swapping them for fakes. I was going to suggest putting them onto a longish chain (necklace) so you’d feel they were safer but that would just get you dragged into farm machinery.

User3735 · 11/08/2023 12:40

Twice while on holiday I have seen posters offering rewards for found engagement/wedding rings so I think it's really sensible not to take them actually.

pontipinemum · 11/08/2023 12:48

@Parsleymint no I doubt anyone would judge me and I def don't judge anyone for not wearing a wedding ring. I just like to wear one. No the one I have doesn't turn my finger green.

@Pfpppl glad I'm not the only one who wears fake rings!

@Papernotplastic a chain would prob snap, but you actually have to be so careful, PTO's (which we have safety covers on) are so scary. We cut all the strings out of hoodys etc I have seen some horror stuff.

@User3735 oh no, I hope they got them back!!

My fingers swell in the heat so I end up taking my rings off after the first day or so anyway, so this year I just left them at home. I also damaged my engagement ring so badly on holiday one year that the jeweller advised me against wearing it daily when I had it repaired so that also makes me super cautious with my other jewellery.
