Update - too large for flight

nearlyemptynes · 09/08/2023 10:44

I posted a few weeks ago about how worried I was about fitting in the seat on the plane on our family holiday. Half of the people who replied were lovely with real life stories and practical advice. Half were really cruel and horrible. Mumsnet removed the thread due to how horrible it got. To remind everyone I am a size 24.
Well we have just returned from the most wonderful holiday in Crete. There were NO issues on the flight, other than needing a seat belt extension. We flew with Easyjet. The seats were spacious and comfy and the table in front came down completely flat. It was such a relief. Thank you to all who gave helpful advice.

So glad you had a good flight and lovely holiday. Hope it gives you confidence as well for your next holiday so you can book and not worry in advance.

LadyRoughDiamond · 09/08/2023 15:24

So pleased that your flight went well and that you enjoyed your holiday… but now it’s your turn to be the expert: any good tips for surviving in the heat as a larger person?

dottiedodah · 09/08/2023 15:27

Glad you had a good time .TBH few of us (including me!) are a perfect shape! .lots of threads here on size, but over half the UK population of women are a size 16 plus.Ignore nasty comments

Topseyt123 · 09/08/2023 15:28

I'm very glad it all went well. I'm the same size as you and sometimes have needed a seatbelt extension, so I know where your feelings came from.

I'm sorry that the arseholes and fuckwits set upon you on your last thread. Some people are just so thick and lacking in empathy. Ignore them. Their opinions are of no value at all.

ManateeFair · 09/08/2023 15:29

YAY! I remember your thread. I felt so sorry for you because you were so worried, but I knew you'd be absolutely fine! I'm so glad you had a lovely time on your holiday. Hopefully you'll be jetsetting all over the place from now on! :)

fibeee · 09/08/2023 15:30

Glad you had a lovely holiday OP. I remember your original thread.

TriedTurningItOff · 09/08/2023 15:34

So glad to read this! Thanks for posting.

And to others facing this issue: please know that anyone being cruel or judgmental about another person's body has issues much bigger than mere size. Here's to everyone living their life with as much freedom and pleasure as possible 💐💐

Sunnymummy8 · 09/08/2023 15:36

So glad you had a fab time 💜

cloudydays97 · 09/08/2023 15:37

I'm pleased you had a good trip OP. I think it's disgusting people were rude to you they've no right to comment on your weight.

Completely separate to that though I've seen posts on this thread saying 24 isn't big and I find that a bit shocking.

Changedname81 · 09/08/2023 15:42

May I derail a bit and ask for everyone’s experience with Whizzair? I’m a size 18 but all my weight is in my tummy and bum… 🫣

nettie434 · 09/08/2023 15:45

So glad the flight and holiday were excellent!

PrudenceDictates · 09/08/2023 15:48

I saw the previous thread in its early stages; didn't see how nasty it became. 😕

I'm glad you had a great holiday, OP, and that your travelling worries were unfounded.

To those who like to stick the boot in (online and anonymously OFC) to strangers about their weight... you don't know what illnesses, medications, addiction issues, stresses with job or difficult/disabled/chronically unwell children, mental health issues, relationship issues etc. someone may have had or may still be having.
You don't know that they haven't already lost several stone and are continuing to eat healthily and exercise.
You DO know that words can hurt.

When you have the choice to be horrible and judgemental or not... always choose not.

LostCats · 09/08/2023 16:04

Ah I am so glad you had a lovely time!!
I saw the original thread and thought you’d be absolutely fine as all the airline staff I’ve ever encountered have been very nice.

I’m so sorry people were unkind. Completely not necessary.

sqirrelfriends · 09/08/2023 16:07

I’m glad you had a great holiday. Thanks for updating, it will definitely come in handy for others in the future.

Size 24 is nothing. People are just a bit thick sometimes.

There is no need for meanness, or anyone giving the OP “advice” like they all did last time or anyone insulting her. But here is also no need for utter nonsense. It’s just as unhelpful. A size 24 is not nothing. We all know that. The OP knows that. Im overweight and I know I am. Someone saying “oh, that’s nothing” is not helpful or kind. It’s idiotic. We all know. Just don’t say anything if you can say something sensible.

EhrlicheFrau · 09/08/2023 16:10

I am so pleased you enjoyed your holiday and everything went smoothly!

quietnightmare · 09/08/2023 16:12

Awww I saw your thread. That's great news OP. All that worry for nothing. Ignore the haters

Hatvonbat · 09/08/2023 16:14

Forget the haters. So pleased you had a nice experience.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 09/08/2023 16:22

Really pleased you had a good time and no issues.

I’ve got 2 friends who are a similar size to you, one just back from Barbados and the other has been abroad a few times in past year or so and they’ve had no issues with seats and seat belts at all. One wore compression socks/tights due to past stroke but apart from that they were fine.

I would say if you want to and only if you want to, I joined WW at the start of this year, lost almost a stone but put it back on again but there are success stories, a few people have lost half their body weight.

The great thing about them and the classes are it’s generally non judgmental, the one strict consultant we had when our usual one was on holiday I said I didn’t like her and why. No way am I going to be barked at by a sergeant major type! Our usual consultant has put on a bit over her holiday and has a weakness for Cadburys mini eggs!

Nottogetapenny · 09/08/2023 16:40

Thank you for up dating! So pleased you had a lovely holiday, and you don’t have to worry for your next trip! I was sure you would be fine, you didn’t need the unkind or negative comments from some people!

KnickerlessParsons · 09/08/2023 16:47

Are you sure that was EasyJet? 😊

FrenchandSaunders · 09/08/2023 16:55

Glad your holiday went so well OP. I remember your thread and some of the arseholes who posted .... what is wrong with people ffs.

Great update.

TinkerbellefromYorkshire · 09/08/2023 17:11

I fly a few times a year.. same size as you.. jet2 l don't need extention and plenty of room.. Ryanair l need extension and not as much room. I'm so glad you had a fabulous holiday and as for those people being nasty .. Internet trolls.. dont waste your time and energy on them.

Namechange666 · 09/08/2023 17:18

Some people are just antifat and they will waste no time in telling people their opinions. It's awful. Got no time for bullies and their nasty mouths.

So glad you had a wonderful flight and it was okay for you.
