Update - too large for flight

nearlyemptynes · 09/08/2023 10:44

I posted a few weeks ago about how worried I was about fitting in the seat on the plane on our family holiday. Half of the people who replied were lovely with real life stories and practical advice. Half were really cruel and horrible. Mumsnet removed the thread due to how horrible it got. To remind everyone I am a size 24.
Well we have just returned from the most wonderful holiday in Crete. There were NO issues on the flight, other than needing a seat belt extension. We flew with Easyjet. The seats were spacious and comfy and the table in front came down completely flat. It was such a relief. Thank you to all who gave helpful advice.

Fantastic, I’m glad it went ok! Thanks for the update.

So glad you had a good flight and enjoyed your holiday!

How did the other thread become mean? Was it post after post telling you to lose weight or just one or two fat-shaming individuals sticking their oar in? I'd like to think that the vast majority of posts were respectful to you.

I see all the time "Mumsnet is so mean these days". But I don't think so. There are some posts that need deleting of (not whole threads) but 95% of Mumsnetters know how to conduct themselves with courtesy.

When you delete a whole thread all the informative / useful replies disappear too and that's just a waste of everyone's time.

It came filled with comments about 'spilling into seats' and 'this is your wake up call.' Not what the OP asked for advice on.

One post told me i should go on meal replacement shakes for three weeks, one told me i should not have booked the flight. Yes I am fat, no its not good, however, I am a productive hard working member of society in full time employment with three teenage children, not a mass murderer!

Delighted it all went well. Easyjet is very spacious which is good to let people know. Ryanair is a nightmare. My sister and I travelled to Spain last month and she is a size 22 and she struggled for the whole journey, luckily she was sitting beside me and didn't have to be worried about the "infamous spilling over" and "encroaching on people" MN pet hates but she was uncomfortable the whole way there and back.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 09/08/2023 14:05

Glad you had a wonderful holiday, OP.

Wintercomesoon · 09/08/2023 14:10

So happy for you that you had a good holiday OP

Zimunya · 09/08/2023 14:10

I didn’t see your original post, but just wanted to say that I’m so sorry some people were awful to you. I’m equally glad that you got some good advice, and that you went ahead and had a great trip.

margotsdevil · 09/08/2023 14:13

Glad it went well. To be honest, as someone who's probably a size 21, I find it's a really mixed bag so I never tell anyone "you'll be fine" or "no you won't". In a recent easyJet trip I needed an extension on the way there but not the way back, for example. It really depends more on the aircraft type.

RedDoughnut · 09/08/2023 14:16

I'm delighted for you.

Arniesleftleg · 09/08/2023 14:18

This is lovely to hear. So glad you enjoyed your holiday and the flight.
Sorry that people were cruel to you, sadly some people just have no filter and think they can get away with pulling others down.

switswoo81 · 09/08/2023 14:31

Absolutely delighted that you had a lovely holiday and everything worked out

Just fyi on this thread Aerlingus Airbus has huge seats and lovely long seatbelts.

PurpleButterflyWings · 09/08/2023 14:36

Lovely news @nearlyemptynes ! Hope you weren't too hot!!! 😬

FWIW, I don't think size 24 is really big. It's on the 'cuddly' side of course, but not massive.

Glad you had a great holiday and the flight was fine! Smile

BlastedIce · 09/08/2023 14:41

So pleased you had a fab holiday and all
was good!

Great update.

ClawedButler · 09/08/2023 14:42

YAY! This has cheered me right up, I remember your original thread.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 09/08/2023 14:43

Glad you enjoyed your holiday OP.

Interesting information from PPs on relative aircraft seat space with different companies .

bumblefeline · 09/08/2023 14:54

Sorry people were arseholes to you OP. Did not see your original thread.

I'm about your size and travel all over. Glad your trip went well.

We have just flown BA, belt a bit tight going on the 777. Loads more room on the 788, belt was longer too.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 09/08/2023 14:58

Thank you for updating us but can I just say I told you so. X

Bigbabymomma · 09/08/2023 15:11

Don't forget, you also update threads to help other people.

A lost art!

floribunda18 · 09/08/2023 15:15

I keep reading the title of this as Too large for fight and thinking "I'd certainly back the OP in a fight." 🙂

Glad it was all ok.

PinkBuffalo · 09/08/2023 15:16

Did not see you original thread op but much glad you did have a great holiday 🥳
my friend worked for a airline and I always remember him saying no big deal to just ask for a seatbelt extension no one cares and they would much rather someone be safe wearing a extension than no wearing a seatbelt!

CornishTiger · 09/08/2023 15:16

So glad to see this update. I saw that thread and it really depressed me. I’d still like to lose weight but at least I know travel is still possible.

Crunchingleaf · 09/08/2023 15:19

OP I am glad you enjoyed your holiday. Go out and do the things you want to do and don’t be seeing your weight as a barrier stopping you doing the things you want to do.

Fraaahnces · 09/08/2023 15:21

Ah good! I knew you’d be fine. So pleased for you.
