Update - too large for flight

nearlyemptynes · 09/08/2023 10:44

I posted a few weeks ago about how worried I was about fitting in the seat on the plane on our family holiday. Half of the people who replied were lovely with real life stories and practical advice. Half were really cruel and horrible. Mumsnet removed the thread due to how horrible it got. To remind everyone I am a size 24.
Well we have just returned from the most wonderful holiday in Crete. There were NO issues on the flight, other than needing a seat belt extension. We flew with Easyjet. The seats were spacious and comfy and the table in front came down completely flat. It was such a relief. Thank you to all who gave helpful advice.

Kind of you to update for anyone else worrying (jet 2 is fine also)

WhatADrabCarpet · 09/08/2023 12:51

That's great to hear.

Glad your fears were allayed and that you had a great time.

Alwaystired2023 · 09/08/2023 12:52

Ah amazing update thank you! And so glad you had a lovely holiday

BabyHaribo · 09/08/2023 12:53

That's amazing!

Thank you so much for coming back and updating

Starrynightsandpixiedust · 09/08/2023 13:02

I'm so glad you enjoyed your holiday! Such a lovely update to read.

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 09/08/2023 13:02

I’ve flown at 24 stone size 28 both Easyjet and Ryanair, found it sometimes uncomfortable but if I’m sitting with family I’d go on an aisle and no issues. When flying alone for work I’ve found it tricky if there’s someone in the middle seat as obviously I don’t want to take up any of their arm space but that’s only been short internal flights - I just lean to the aisle side a lot! Just lost 5 stone and due to fly again next week I think I’ll still need a seatbelt extension though. Really glad you were ok and had a great time. Being fat is one of the MN 7 deadly sins so not surprised you had shitty comments.

Waitingalwayswailing · 09/08/2023 13:06

Very glad you had a great time!

We have flown recently with Ryanair on a flight that was 1 hour 45 to South France and the seat was absolutely tiny. I've never been
in such a small Seat. Thighs were squished with both people either side of me. And the table very almost touched my stomach (which really is far from large). My knees also had about an inch and a half space to the seat infront.

I am a size 12-14 and don't carry my weight in any particular area. I'm 5 foot 4.

And each person either side of me was slim or average size.

Pluffe · 09/08/2023 13:07

Glad you had a lovely holiday!

Lwrenagain · 09/08/2023 13:08

@nearlyemptynes I'm really glad you had a lovely time and thanks for update.
As others have said you'll have helped other people on here with anxiety about flying and being bigger.

But I'm chuffed you had a good experience 💖

Glitterblue · 09/08/2023 13:11

I’m so glad you had a lovely holiday and a comfortable flight. I saw the beginning of your other thread but didn’t realise it had turned nasty. It makes me sad that so many people can just be mean and awful to others, particularly from behind a keyboard. I wish people could just keep their nasty thoughts to themselves. I’m glad it hasn’t put you off posting though, OP.

LakeTiticaca · 09/08/2023 13:13

Good news. Jet2 seem to have quite roomy seats as well, I found 😀

Sparklesocks · 09/08/2023 13:15

I’m glad!
and I’m sorry your thread attracted the vipers

Malarandras · 09/08/2023 13:18

Excellent - good for you! And thank you for coming back to post, despite the horrendous nastiness from some people in your last thread.

Nemesias · 09/08/2023 13:18

I’m so glad you had a great holiday op there were some real nasty posters on your last thread.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/08/2023 13:21

Lovely to hear you had a good flight and a wonderful holiday
Now you are reassured for the next time

Well done losing 5 stone. I lost 4 a few years back, then put on 2 now lost 2 and want to lose one more. It's tedious but can be done.

Trees6 · 09/08/2023 13:24

Great update! I’m sorry that your prior thread, which I recall, went bad.

DyslexicPoster · 09/08/2023 13:26

That's really lovely to hear OP x

Holidayvibes · 09/08/2023 13:30

Delighted you had a great holiday, sorry your last thread got so mean. I’m sure there will be many people searching this over the years so this will really help set their minds at ease too.
Im an 18 and depending on who we fly with I have needed a seatbelt extender. Ryanair i needed one and table sat on my belly! Been with Jet2 and with Tui and seatbelt was fine and tables too!

Elephantsdontlikechocolate · 09/08/2023 13:35

Size 24 is nothing. People are just a bit thick sometimes.

FordKent · 09/08/2023 13:35

Nice to see a 'good news' thread.
I note the airlines used by OP and others.
Do you know what aircraft types you flew on?

Gilead · 09/08/2023 13:36

Due to steroids I too am currently a 24. I’m so pleased you had a lovely holiday.
As for the shits who were nasty, hold your head and your middle finger high!

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/08/2023 13:37

So glad you had a good flight and enjoyed your holiday!

How did the other thread become mean? Was it post after post telling you to lose weight or just one or two fat-shaming individuals sticking their oar in? I'd like to think that the vast majority of posts were respectful to you.

I see all the time "Mumsnet is so mean these days". But I don't think so. There are some posts that need deleting of (not whole threads) but 95% of Mumsnetters know how to conduct themselves with courtesy.

When you delete a whole thread all the informative / useful replies disappear too and that's just a waste of everyone's time.

Jazzybean · 09/08/2023 13:37

So glad you had a good holiday OP!

crazeekat · 09/08/2023 13:43
