"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

@AbyssiniaArms the poster told you her DH volunteers and surprise surprise most are economic migrants ! Now you don’t like that and turn nasty as what she said doesn’t suit your narrative…

The current conservative party and not conservatives. They're extreme right wing

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/08/2023 17:27

Approximately 70% of asylum claims are accepted as genuine, so the vast majority of the people affected will indeed be fleeing unsafe countries

No - because the figures are massively skewed by the amnesties which keep being declared to make the backlog of cases look better

This.

They are baiting all of us. A culture war is their only chance of avoiding electoral wipeout.

Absolutely. There will sadly be plenty to applaud his sentiments. There are some on this site.

So how come a majority of asylum claims are successful if most of them are economic migrants?

Lifeomars · 08/08/2023 17:27

This man repulses me. Sadly there are many who think like he does and see him as a "plain speaking man of the people". I live in Nottingham and he is the MP for Sutton in Ashfield out in Notts County. This means he regularly features in our local media and although the majority find his opinions and behaviour repellant there are a significant minority who think he should be PM!

Tantaijin · 08/08/2023 17:28

It’s horrifying to me that standards of behaviour expected from politicians is declining. At one point in the distant past Boris Johnson would have never have gotten in purely on the fact he had an affair/was divorced.

Even if this politician had a point, it’s disappointing that he was unable to coherently state it without swearing or sounding like an angry man down the pub.

I am on the fence about what he said, if only because my own belief have been challenged by living near to one of the hotels that a large group of young men in houses in.

It isn’t the fact that they are foreign (so am I) and I know British men can be just as badly behaved. But these men are in large groups, with nothing to do all day except hang around. And all I will say is that their backwards views on women are painfully obvious and I hate that women and girls now have complete no go areas in this town.

I saw this, excellent response.

Tantaijin · 08/08/2023 17:30

Ah posted too early.

I meant to say that I came to the UK to get away from the kind of attitudes these groups of men seem to be bringing along with them.

Yes there is still crime here, British men can still rape. But they generally don’t openly regard me or my daughters as not human.

25sheets · 08/08/2023 17:30

horseyhorsey17 · 08/08/2023 16:45

That's their choice and they're extremely well paid to have their freedom curtailed by living offshore.

It's not remotely the same if you have no choice but to do it. That's when it borders on imprisonment.

Are you real??? You are saying hard working men have chosen to work and live on this accommodation and that's fine because they chose it BUT men trying to gain access to the UK illegally haven't had a choice on where to live and may not want to live in these conditions, so it's "imprisonment". Absolute BONKERS.

ProudToBeANorthener · 08/08/2023 16:36

Did he say this to asylum seekers or to economic migrants?

The Tory's don't differentiate.

They've called their new bill the Illegal migration Bill. It applied to asylum seekers. Which - by law - are legal.

anniegun · 08/08/2023 17:34

Anderson is the driving intellect behind the current Tory party. Most are just filling their bank accounts before they get booted out (Dorries, Rees-Mog, Hancock)

Intellect? Does he have any?

Viviennemary · 08/08/2023 17:38

I don't get why makeshift tents are acceptable in France but we are expected to provide hotel accommodation.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/08/2023 17:40

2024 GE will be about immigration

In part, yes, but I would suggest that will really just be a headline feature of a wider "culture war" approach. It's already well underway and internal Government memos prove this is absolutely the intention of the Tories.

It's entirely Trumpian. They have no interest in governing the UK for the whole, so all they need to to is convince enough of "us" that everyone else is a problem, and bob's your uncle, another Government with 30-34% of the vote thanks to the bonkers FPTP system, which, of course, they perpetually tinker with in order to favour themselves even more.

As you've pointed out, we've seen this already with Leave/Remain, with 'Remoaners' still being blamed for the predictable, and utterly abject failure of Brexit three and a half years after the fact, a Brexit that Leave has had complete control over for the duration.

So yes, it'll be Mail/Express/Telegraph-driven horseshit, spoon-fed to the gullible, victimising and blaming anyone and everything, immigrants, 'woke', trans, Labour, lefties, ethnic minorities, 'separatists', lawyers, welfare claimants (but not those on a State Pension of course), the EU, strikers and unions, Biden, you name it, absolutely everyone but the criminal cartel who have actually been running the UK into the ground for the past 5 years and their pals and benefactors siphoning off billions in profit and driving the cost of greed crisis, and sure enough, there will be plenty of Tory MP's returned yet again.

In the UK there are plenty enough racists, xenophobes, morons, and wilfully ignorant people who will not entertain the thought that their own prejudices and misconceptions might be the real problem, to ensure the return of this utterly contemptible government. The outcome of the Brexit referendum and the fact that Boris Johnson was ever considered a fit and proper person to lead a political party, never mind a country, are proof enough of that.

Lifeomars · 08/08/2023 17:41

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 16:03

That may be true, but it doesn’t follow that the uk should be obligated to accede to their wishes. If the objective is to flee to a safe country, France answers that description.

Think back to all the Ukrainian refugees, they were allowed to choose which country they wanted to go to, now why didn't that have the Mail and Express lot up in arms? Of course they want to return to their country when/if it is safe and the chances are people fleeing the conflicts in Syria and Iraq will seek to go back when/if things are safer

Themaghag · 08/08/2023 17:42

That's our Lee - he's a real charmer - not! However, I really doubt whether the good people of Ashfield will have the sense to kick him out come the election.
He and Ben (Three jobs angling for yet another one) Bradley from the neighbouring constituency of Mansfield - yes Mansfield (Mansfield!) will probably be there for life!

SimplicityHurts · 08/08/2023 17:44

Twyford · 08/08/2023 16:29

Would you have been "so grateful" if you were told that you would only be allowed off the barge in very limited circumstances, that you would be sharing a room with a stranger, that the barge was built for a fraction of the numbers who were going to be living there, that everyone else (including large numbers of men) would be in the same situation cooped up all day so your safety could not be guaranteed - and that in the event of fire the chances were that you wouldn't escape?

Safer and warmer than the streets though is it not?! Your argument doesn't stack up I'm afraid. I truly wish compassionate thinking would extend to ALL vulnerable groups, including @BiscuitsandPuffin who has given a very real account of what a place on a floating barge would have meant to her in her time of need...

Kindly, point out where I attacked you?

Your anecdote doesn't support the data

I find nothing about this thread 'hilarious'.

It is depressing.

2024 GE will be about immigration

Can’t find the post for this but yes it could well be.

But not just here, other EU countries will likely see the same. Just a general shift in politics. Tensions will rise and people will get more demanding

Breakoutbertha · 08/08/2023 15:22

I think you will find plenty of people agree with him. They just won't say it.

This.
But no party deals with illegal migration and the risks to human life.

I don't believe someone whose DH is a volunteer spouts DAILY MAIL bile.

Really? You think asylum seekers should fuck off back to where they came from, even if that means them and their children being raped, tortured and killed?

I thought he said France?
