"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

Well he isn't wrong. If people don't like what is on offer, they are free to go elsewhere.

Considering the state of the housing crisis for those born and that pay in here, and they conditions many are living in, these people should think themselves lucky they get housed at all. Many that pay tax are in worse much conditions/situations.

Approximately 70% of asylum claims are accepted as genuine, so the vast majority of the people affected will indeed be fleeing unsafe countries. And we have an awful lot of empty property, particularly in towns.

And yet the percentage is much lower in France. It seems inherently unlikely that we would attract a higher percentage of well founded claimants than France. Likelihood is that our domestic authorities adopt a much more liberal approach - hence the crossings.

"Likelihood is that our domestic authorities adopt a much more liberal approach - hence the crossings."

Who on earth has been in charge of the Home Office for the last 13 years I wonder?

Why do you think 'illegal' immigrants are France's problem? Why should France hold onto them - and pay for them - when they don't want to be there anyway?

If they aren't France's problem, why are they ours?

Well, this thread really clarifies why the UK is such a shitshow. People don't want facts, they just want their racism pandered to. Nice. If the Tories were to be believed, you'd think they had just come into power after an election and were having to clear up the mess made by a previous government.

It's their own mess that they chose to make.

Meanwhile, I have DDs who have been catcalled and harrassed on the streets of the town where I live.

By British men.

This barge would be OK if it were used sensibly in terms of the numbers housed on it, and if there weren't this petty policy of closing off the recreational facilities. All that does is pander to the frothing racists - and stoke tensions on board, making fights, fires and incidents more likely.

The problem is that any attempt to adopt a much more stringent approach is likely to fall foul of the numerous legal challenges that are mounted on behalf of claimants (funded by you and me).

@Handbagger99
''I agree with him''

The man is a disgrace.

The Tories have managed to destroy standards of living and turn this country an international joke.

It has gone beyond being a supporter of the left or the right. It is about common human decency.

Politicians should show the example, have standards and not use such pathetic, appalling language.

If you want to be a supporter of a racist and xenophobic thug passing himself as a politician, that's your choice.

Not in my name.

The current government is not a conservative government: it is just a bunch of over-privileged criminals and shysters who are lining their pockets with our money while trying to convince the gullible and Daily Hate readers that immigrants are to blame for everything.

I don’t think that this is about people fleeing war and torture. It’s about people complaining about being housed on a barge.

A barge that is designed to house people and not prisoners either. It was designed to house workers.

Vinvertebrate · 08/08/2023 17:15

They are fleeing torture and war from their home country

My DH volunteers locally with asylum seekers because he speaks Farsi and Arabic. Many, many of them are economic migrants. It’s astonishing that this simple and obvious fact continues to be denied by the left with totally manufactured fervour.

People are fed up, we can’t house our own people and resources are very strained. Sadly several were attacked in my area as people don’t want them and don’t feel safe. They don’t integrate and they are all young men. Trouble is as another poster said they come from countries which are at odds with our way of life

Be far more fed up by the government that has robbed you and the public purse for the last 13 years.

They are hanging on by a thread, they know their time is up so its nothing for them to divert attention to 'the boats'. This particular government has a sadistic steak never seen before.

The fact you fall for it saddens me. same for you @Handbagger99

I am surprised the lies aren't choking you.

manontroppo · 08/08/2023 17:16

This playbook is a copy of the policies used by Australia to deter migrants from crossing from PNG and other places. By all accounts that policy (holding migrants offshore) was successful in stopping people from attempting the crossing.

Breakoutbertha · 08/08/2023 17:16

@OoopsOhNo ok so it's in an area of Greater Manchester. The main road the hotel is located on is close to a motorway entry roundabout. In the opposite direction, where I live is very green and heavily wooded, with fishing lodges and a huge nature reserve used by famaies, lone female dog walkers etc. This main road leads to the local market town. A further 1.5 mikes
The hotel was taken over in January. It houses only male asylum seekers and has 24hr security guards.
The men are approx 18 to 30. Various nationalities. They are allowed to leave the site so the main road is constantly full of groups of 20 to 30 guys wandering up and down.
They have been banned from the local shops because of intimidation and the local pubs. They now sit in the nature reserve picnic areas which can no longer used by families. If you walk past them they just stare and look you up and down. Female dog walkers have been advised to not leave the camera areas by the local police and not go alone into the wooded areas.

Are you aware of the numbers?

The fact that other European countries take in far more...

I know folk who speak Arabic and are racist as fuck.

But that isn't as hard hitting as they are all here for the benefits and NHS 🙄

LlynTegid · 08/08/2023 17:19

There are 50,000 people seeking asylum in hotels. The barge could only host 1% of them. Rwanda I understand has a limit too, if anyone ever goes there.

Chequers and the grounds could host more people. Speeding up claims by under a month would probably have the same impact.

StrawberryWasp · 08/08/2023 17:20

Well it's a bit indelicately put but true.

They chose to come here from France, if the accommodation does not suit them, they are free to return.

Most people don't want boats of migrants coming from France.

It's true that the Tory party haven't addressed this and it's happened under them but labour and many posters here seem to think unlimited 'asylum seekers' in small boats from France is a great policy.

I think labour have to be really careful here they could lose the election that's in their hands if they insist on this no borders all welcome nonsense.

Weddingpuzzle · 08/08/2023 15:25

@TooBigForMyBoots exactly. I was trying to say the same but obviously didn't make my point that well. This is directly from the House of Commons Library

'The annual number of asylum applications to the UK peaked in 2002 at 84,132. After that the number fell sharply to reach a twenty-year low point of 17,916 in 2010. It rose steadily throughout the 2010s, then sharply in 2021 and again in 2022 to reach 74,751 applications, the highest annual number since 2002.'

They think we are all thick AF.

Plenty are.
