"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

I used to work in the oil industry. These barges are used to house men working offshore. Men of all sorts of abilities....£1000 pounds a day or £200 a day. I know 2 men who have been housed on them.

Everyone is equal in the accommodation. Sharing is normal. The accommodation is extremely safe.

What more do you want?

People who have lived there have pointed out that they were only on the barges at night times, that they had rooms to themselves, that they had rest and recreation areas. Fire safety was not a concern because the numbers on the barge at any one time was way lower. Plus that the fact that they were being paid so well was an incentive. It's hardly comparable.

My point is that this barge is a better alternative than to where certain hotels that accommodate them are situated.

The fact that these men now don't want to go is not my problem.
And on that basis I agree with the statement.
Like I've said.. It's easy to sit on here spouting all sorts but until its in YOUR face everyday then it's easy to scoff at my remarks. Wait until YOUR 11yr Daughter is too fearful to go out. Then come back on here.

These are some of the people you are talking about, disabled asylum seeker and torture victims

Because according to EU law they have to seek asylum in the first country they land in. So you're problem is with the EU.

Sigh. Yet again, that is not what the law says.

But only the naive who have never stepped outside the world of Twitter still believe that most are genuine asylum seekers

Please enlighten us as to how you square this with the fact that the overwhelming majority of Asylum claims made in the UK are ultimately granted, if indeed "most" are not genuine asylum seekers.

horseyhorsey17, they are France’s problem because they are living in Calais. Why should we accept 74,000 illegal migrants who fancy hopping across the Channel to strain our resources when we can’t house our own young people?
Nobody is fleeing persecution from France, they were perfectly safe there - they just didn’t like living in a tented campsite and thought we would give them nice hotels. They have a brass neck complaining about the barge.

Asylum seekers aren't illegal immigrants.

France has taken far more of these people than we have (as has Germany and pretty much every country they have traveled through)

If geography was different and the UK and France swapped places, would you be happy for us to take all of those people while France sat smugly across a body of water and refused to take ANY of them, because the UK is safe?
I suspect you wouldn't. You'd be demanding that every Western European country took their fair share and helped you out.

Are they fleeing unsafe countries? Or are they economic migrants from Albania?

We're a small country and we barely have enough houses for the people who already live here. Where are these men supposed to eventually live?

And why aren't people more concerned about the fact that these men (because it's almost all men) are generally from countries with deeply-held views about women and gay people that are entirely at odds with UK life? As a woman, I wouldn't feel safe with a hotel/barge full of these men near me.

Approximately 70% of asylum claims are accepted as genuine, so the vast majority of the people affected will indeed be fleeing unsafe countries. And we have an awful lot of empty property, particularly in towns.

Wsmi · 08/08/2023 16:46

Most people posting here live in a bubble. Most people in the real world agree with Lee Anderson. Even thought the Tories really don’t want to stop the boats. People in the real world also accept the reality that most asylum seekers are economic migrants. Anyone would game the system if they could, so the system and the people running it are the problem. But only the naive who have never stepped outside the world of Twitter still believe that most are genuine asylum seekers.

What exactly is your evidence that "most people" agree with 30p Lee?

Is it like your evidence that "most asylum seekers are economic migrants"? Because Home Office statistics say that around 70% of asylum claims are genuine.

Face it, racists want to be able to believe they are all economic migrants because it makes them feel less uncomfortable about their racism, especially when it comes to sending vulnerable people back to be killed.

Breakoutbertha · 08/08/2023 15:45

All I'm going to say is my stance has changed since living within 0.7 miles of a travel lodge now homing 232 male asylum seekers. I'm not a racist but why I've personally witnessed beggars belief.
So yes I do want them moved to that barge and ASAP

@Breakoutbertha are you able to say a bit more about this?

I personally believe that the barge and Travelodge etc is completely inhumane but I am aware that in the lovely leafy part of the country I live in I don't have any direct experience of living next to large amounts of displaced people with inadequate local facilities to serve everyone.

Breakoutbertha · 08/08/2023 16:58

@OoopsOhNo what do you want to know?

ilovebrie8 · 08/08/2023 17:00

People are fed up, we can’t house our own people and resources are very strained. Sadly several were attacked in my area as people don’t want them and don’t feel safe. They don’t integrate and they are all young men. Trouble is as another poster said they come from countries which are at odds with our way of life

OoopsOhNo · 08/08/2023 17:00

@Breakoutbertha what you've witnessed, is it really all men, impact on the town / village and local services?

The Tories caused this shitshow so you're going to vote for more of it?Confused

And that folks is why the UK is in the state its in.Hmm

Basketballqueen · 08/08/2023 17:04

' Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.'

TBH Churchill was an out and out colonial racist, so probably would have said exactly the same thing. And before you go howling at me for that comment, look up the Bengal famine...

Unfortunately there are many people who'll agree with Lee, the Brexit voters for starters. this is all a great distraction for the Tories, the country's public services are crumbling, schools are in trouble, we'll be getting our state pensions in out 70s if the Tories stay in but their voters are obsessed with 'foreigners' ...

Nevermay · 08/08/2023 17:05

Handbagger99 · 08/08/2023 15:24

I agree with him.

Do you have children? If their school is fully staffed, it will likely be because they have refugees on the pay roll.

Not that the use they will be to us is the only value a human being has, but some people act like it is, so it can be helpful to point out the benefits the them personally

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 17:06

horseyhorsey17 · 08/08/2023 16:40

Why do you think 'illegal' immigrants are France's problem? Why should France hold onto them - and pay for them - when they don't want to be there anyway?

Because it’s a safe country, which has the same obligations as the uk under the relevant international laws (glad to see the previous excitable assertions that France is a hotbed of rape and torture do not seem to have been pursued)

IClaudine · 08/08/2023 17:06

Twyford it is a waste of time trying to educate the people who have swallowed whole the Tory lies about immigration.

I am really worried that the Tories will get in again. This sort of rhetoric sadly appeals to a lot of people, many of whom don't usually vote, but might get out and do so on this one issue as they did in 2016/2019. 2019 GE was about Brexit. 2024 GE will be about immigration. I am sure we can all envisage the Venn diagram.
