"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

@Twyford , do they not? Any safety issues should certainly be addressed.

They've chartered this thing at a ridiculous cost, probably on the basis that a few mates and party donors are making a nice profit out of it. They could save a fortune by taking up the French invitation to have an asylum processing base on French soil combined with offering safe passage, which would incidentally resolve the boat problem overnight. They could also save a fortune by processing those outstanding asylum claims, including getting the Immigration appeal system running to full capacity - I was reading how a number of part time immigration judges are twiddling their thumbs with no work to do, which is ludicrous.

But, of course, they don't want to do any of that, because it doesn't really appeal to the madder fringes amongst the Mail and Express reader vote. And they don't seem to have noticed that currently Labour are doing considerably better on immigration issues than they are, so far as the voters are concerned.

Honestly, it would make much more sense for them just to resign now rather than drag the country through another year of this ongoing disaster.

@BiscuitsandPuffin
No refugee is required to stay in the first safe country they get to. And many have familial, cultural, linguistic, historical ties to the UK. Most refugees, in the 90 plus percentage range, go to the nearest safe adjoining country to their own so Turkey, Pakistan, Jordan have millions and millions of refugees.

That may be true, but it doesn’t follow that the uk should be obligated to accede to their wishes. If the objective is to flee to a safe country, France answers that description.

They know it will also force Labour to say how they would house migrants and that their plans won't be a vote winner.

yes - does anyone know what Labour’s plans for migrants are?

As far as I know same as the Tories albeit “temporary”

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/aug/06/labour-would-barges-temporarily-house-asylum-seekers-stephen-kinnock

Labour would use barges to temporarily house asylum seekers, says Stephen Kinnock

Shadow immigration minister says party would have no choice but to deal with ‘mess we inherit’ from Tories

Handbagger99 · 08/08/2023 15:24

I agree with him.

Really? You think asylum seekers should fuck off back to where they came from, even if that means them and their children being raped, tortured and killed?

Barbadossunset · 08/08/2023 16:04

Ah ok, thank you theeyeballs

Surprised they haven't branded the Fire Brigade as woke for that

His point is that this is free accommodation with free food etc for supposedly desperate people. The conditions will be better than many brits live in (yes a problem in itself). Why are we expected to provide 5 star accommodation to anyone who comes here claiming asylum? It's better than a refugee camp.

Who says we should provide 5 star accommodation? If you think that is what has been happening to date, you've been reading too much right-wing press.

Podgedodge · 08/08/2023 16:07

Friend of mine just posted’well said Lee’.
I despair

Theeyeballsinthesky · 08/08/2023 16:07

I think @Barbadossunset they are so focused on regaining the red wall, they will say they will be just as awful to asylum seekers while they are waiting for their claims to be processed as the Tories - whilst claiming that they will be better because they will process claims quicker.

This is happening in France? Wow. Someone better get on the blower to that macaron fella.

Is this ship a prison?

Can they leave?

If so, what's to stop them doing so when it becomes a shit hole with rival gangs fighting each other?

Twyford · 08/08/2023 16:09

Unphased · 08/08/2023 15:48

I would imagine the vast majority of people would agree with him, if I was really fleeing possible death and persecution I would only be to glad of somewhere safe, warm and being fed and showered with hot water,

The problem is that it is clearly not safe.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/08/2023 16:10

The only way they are going to keep 'some' Tory votes are by bringing in the culture wars- please don't think this is deliberate - it is.

Expect full on UKIP /national front stuff about immigrants/foreigners / the 'elite' / anything a bit 'woke' - they need to appeal to the man out there and his gangsters moll who think Lee Anderson is a 'top bloke' - rather than the shallow opportunistic one dimensional twat he really is. I'm originally from his neck of the woods and sadly he is extremely typical in his attitudes and demeanour.

He has a point. He could have put it more gently.

Yes he does!

AgathaSpencerGregson · 08/08/2023 16:11

Part of the answer as to why France is such a hellhole may lie here:
https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/25/proportion-refugees-granted-uk-asylum-hits-32-year-high
the percentage of asylum claims which are successful in France is around a third of ours. Some noise in the data presumably from Ukraine and HK (although the uk data was year to June 2022) but even so, seems to be a significant difference in approach

Proportion of refugees granted UK asylum hits 32-year high | Immigration and asylum | The Guardian

More than three-quarters have claims approved, as figures show big rise in Albanians crossing Channel

https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/25/proportion-refugees-granted-uk-asylum-hits-32-year-high

So the Tories, who put all those people into your area and aren't processing their applications so they can leave the hotel, get jobs and move on are going to get your vote because 30p Lee said something nasty?

They've got you pegged right.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
