"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

I expect it’s a deliberate strategy from Tory HQ, they’ll be plenty of people who agree with him and whilst there will be a No 10 statement jokingly saying they don’t agree with the language used, they will be saying they agree with the sentiment.

The Tory’s really are fucking awful.

Absolutely agree

This was not an off the cuff remark

the campaign for the next election is underway and they only need to look to a few countries in Europe to realise this strategy has proven popular

they only care about being in power

No10 has confirmed that Anderson spoke on behalf of the government

https://twitter.com/wizbates/status/1688865323192041474?s=20
Number 10 has backed Lee Anderson over his 'migrants who don't like barges can f**k off back to France' comment.

After Justice Sec Alex Chalk said "his indignation was well placed", No10 told Sky: "The Justice Secretary was speaking on behalf of the government."

Fair enough. They have an election campaign looming and know what will play well with the Great British public. They know it will also force Labour to say how they would house migrants and that their plans won't be a vote winner.

Our political discourse has become so crude, vulgar, debased. It is quite lowering.

Quite agree. See the appalling, racist poster associating Sunak with grooming gangs, defended by Starmer.

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 15:49

'is there no way they can get rid of Sponger Nadine?' Chris Bryant is investigating using a parliamentary rule from the early 19th century to see if it might dislodge her.

Always a relief to see the likes of Bryant deployed where they can do no harm 😂

You seem proud of what the depth to which Conservatibe Party has sunk @AgathaSpencerGregson. That should embarass you but each to their own.

Well it was good enough for construction workers and oil rig workers, why is it deemed inhumane for 500 blokes who we are expected to feed and house when we have a big enough homeless crisis already?
Why would they complain if they have escaped recently from a warzone?
And where are all the women and children?

It was designed for around 200 people, not 500, one to a room not 2-4 and with more communal space than is now available as they stuff more ‘dorms’ in. It’s was intended for for use for very short periods of time, not up to a year and not with prison style restrictions for access and egress.

It’s not a race to the bottom. We indeed do have a huge homelessness problems caused by massive failures from multiple governments (of all colours). That doesn’t remove our obligations to help those in need.

The government could solve the small boats issue almost overnight by providing safe routes to claim asylum (taking up the French offer for example) and actually funding the claims process. Instead they continue to make a hash of it and use idiots like Lee Anderson to stoke up hatred.

Most employers would sack an employee who publicly uses that sort of rhetoric, instead they celebrate it.

If you say so.

I think a fair few will go for it. It’s jarring but then this isn’t going to get easier, not just here either but in EU too

I don’t like that man at all but it’s quite ridiculous to be claiming asylum and then refuse perfectly safe and decent accommodation especially with the excuse that they are afraid of water! How did they get here?

Twyford · 08/08/2023 15:55

They're getting closer and closer to the glory days of the National Front.

The Fire Brigade doesn't think it's safe.

He has a point. He could have put it more gently.

I agree too. Immigrants have to go through France to get here. This is not their first safe country. They don't need to risk their lives on those boats to get to safety. They're already safe in France. They just don't want to live in France. God knows why, it's a lovely country.

@Twyford well it's safer than those still living in cladded tower blocks.

MN doesn’t like this type of talk, but this is exactly how many tax payers feel. It might have been drafted by Comms.

I think you will find plenty of people agree with him. They just won't say it.

They do say it. I don't know anyone who agrees with that policy who is actually afraid to say so (and why would they be afraid? Nothing's going to happen to them, except a devastating roll of the eyes from someone who disagrees). But then most of them add "but you can't say anything these days". I can't resist pointing out "er, you just did".

I verily believe there is no incentive for the current government to succeed in keeping refugees out, because if they did they would have to look for something else to point to as the Big Bad. They messed up by succeeding with Brexit; it used to be so handy to say "we'd love to implement this social policy, but Brussels won't let us". Now there's no EU Commission to blame things on they might have to own their own results - no, it's ok - a flotilla of rubber dinghies containing Foreigns has hove to on the horizon! We're saved, lads.

Barbadossunset · 08/08/2023 16:00

yes - does anyone know what Labour’s plans for migrants are?

BiscuitsandPuffin · 08/08/2023 16:00

I was homeless when I was 18 and fleeing domestic abuse from my mother. At the time parental domestic abuse wasn't recognised, only abuse from a man to a woman. I would have bitten the council's hand off for accommodation on a barge and 3 meals a day. Instead I had to sleep rough because I wasn't pregnant and hadn't chosen to get into the relationship with the person who had tried to murder me, and I wasn't eligible for benefits as I was in my final year of school. I was terrified and completely abandoned by the state. This whole situation is taking the piss. If immigrants don't want it, they should put British homeless people on it instead, and in all the hotels. I would have been so grateful.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2023 16:00

The Tories welcomed UKIP and the BNP in with open arms in order to get those red wall seats and to Get Brexit Done. This is now what we have. Angry thugs fronting a party desperate to stay in power no matter the cost.

All they have in their election playbook is the continued othering, oh and ditching of climate change promises.

midsomermurderess · 08/08/2023 16:01

@BiscuitsandPuffin
No refugee is required to stay in the first safe country they get to. And many have familial, cultural, linguistic, historical ties to the UK. Most refugees, in the 90 plus percentage range, go to the nearest safe adjoining country to their own so Turkey, Pakistan, Jordan have millions and millions of refugees.

User135644 · 08/08/2023 16:01

Anderson is a caricature of what a Tory thinks a working class northerner is.

He's just on a grift to keep the money coming in when he's voted out next year. He's got the obligatory 6 figure salary on GB News for being a twat.
