"If they don't like barges they should fuck off back to France". 30p Lee Anderson of course, not the BNP. Not the National Front or whatever their current name is. The Chairman of the Conservative Party. Supporters must be so proud. What a statesman. So Churchillian.

God how dumb is it to reference Australia where there is no application of the ECHR which is the thing that will destroy Braverman's policy on asylum.

80 per cent of Conservatives think her policy will not work. So they are smarter than the Home Secretary.

Insults won’t go far. But you seem rattled 🤷‍♂️

You’re a Labour voter / supporter yes? Do you think boat numbers will go down if they get in?

jgw1 · 09/08/2023 10:48

ShinyYellowTeapot · 09/08/2023 10:44

@jgw1 well you may well be right but, even tho I'm sick and tired of being punched in the face, I'm still going to vote for the Punch In The Face party candidate, because I am very professional and normal, and I am also scared of kebabs. Or something.

A kebab once jumped up and leapt at me and forced me to eat it. Fearful things kebabs.

It is not really a labour or tory issue and both of them have failed utterly in stopping both illegal immigrants and stopping the massive net immigration - now our highest in our history ever. People in poorer countries are a bit richer so can pay traffickers and they have the internet even in remote places so can see what it looks like in the West and earth's human population is now the highest in world history ever - 8 billion people. These are new and different times for migration and couple that with climate change and many nation states are going to have to be much tougher in makng a priority their own citizens, however cruel that might seem to some.

It would be a nice change if the UK government made its own citizens its priority, rather than enriching its donors, many of whom pay very little tax in the UK.

AIBot · 09/08/2023 10:51

It’s all a distraction whilst corrupt politicians asset strip the country.

Blossomtoes · 09/08/2023 10:52

Remembermynamealways · 09/08/2023 10:23

Oh they will quickly upscale when they realise how much money is available, and that the migrants quickly disappear elsewhere.

They’ve already had shedloads of money for doing fuck all. It would be far more sensible to spend it on fast tracking processing and integrating successful applicants quickly so they can start working and paying taxes. And they call the Tories the party of fiscal competence! 🙄

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 10:54

I don't think anyone should be rattled by Conservative asylum policy given the glacial process to doing anything of effect.

IClaudine · 09/08/2023 10:54

CloudyMcCloud · 09/08/2023 10:44

When you say turn things around do you mean the outlined policies from this morning will decrease numbers crossing?

Look, when Labour publishes its manifesto I will be happy to critique its immigration policy. We all know politicians waffle and spin in interviews.

You seem to think we all imagine Labour is going to solve all the issues around immigration. I don't think any of us think that.

Speaking for myself I want to see an end to the cranking up of xenophobia and an end of the needless spite and cruelty towards people who want to make a life here, whether they are asylum seekers or economic migrants. The only way to even begin to make that a reality is to chuck the Tories out of office.

Ok so you heard the outline this morning and think they’re just waffling. I doubt it will change to deterrent though as that will take a harsh system.

The media will continue to report figures if they rise, countries in the EU have growing tensions with similar. This won’t go away it will get worse, unless a harsh system is used. If people recognise climate change they’ll see this is only going in one direction and the press isn’t state owned, it will be part of discussion.

It is a shame Sunak doesn't get this.

Remembermynamealways · 09/08/2023 10:22

Yes can you imagine the trillions that could be lost ‘increasing’ living standards of corrupt countries world wide. Who is paying for that then you fuckingfuming?

I’m paying for it now , as are you. If we can fund wars, mass destruction, murder, genocide, then we can fund the opposite.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/08/2023 11:06

As I've said before'push the stop the boats thing' - it's stopping people looking at the 700,000 figure of allowed in legally. My own view is many will come in via jobs such as care or HGV or similar and once all sorted will disappear off the lower paid work radar into family businesses etc . The UK is notoriously shit at monitoring or keeping tabs on anything. The boats thing is a minuscule situation compared to the real issue and everyone and his mother flying in legitimately. The thing with the EU was that many came and went and did a few years here and there- those non EU flying in legitimately with families in tow have no intention of returning to wherever they came from at some point- unless it's USA, Japan, Australia, Canada , NZ etc.

Look up systems that have worked. Google mass displacement too.

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 11:07

It's great. We've already given Rwanda £140 million. For nothing.

But perhaps we might have used that here or are the optics of the barge better for the Home Sec's career after the next election

Can you give links to systems that have worked? Or explain mass displacement in your own words?

This 'google it' is just lazy

It’s still not going to make discussions on growing migrants go away. We either deal with increased arrivals and tension that brings or we get prepared as others already are. Labour and their supporters are very much opposed to anything bar making the system easier, which will lift numbers just due to removing obstacles.

How many people will acknowledge their role I wonder when we have those higher numbers

It’s not just lazy it’s disingenuous. The only Tory defender who ever presents any evidence is Clav. Whereas the thread is littered with links from people arguing the other way.

Anxioys · 09/08/2023 11:11

If we want talk about migration how about...

Students
Temp workers

And the numbers post Brexit? Because these things are possible to limit in law. Yet we don't.

Not reading is lazy. Just do basic stuff. Countries in pp have already been mentioned. Just type it in and read it’s really not hard.

That's unfair. Another poster did share a link to an interesting article about the law surrounding asylum seekers, that showed as we all know that the right to seek asylum does not depend upon the method of entry into the UK or whether or not one has transited other countries on the way here.

Remembermynamealways · 09/08/2023 11:15

For those that are worried about the cost of living genuinely why would they vote for Labour where they are guaranteed higher taxes and bills??

At least the conservatives are likely to slash them as soon as possible.

And probably more hair brained schemes like fuckingfuming suggested like increasing the living standards everywhere in the world.

It beggars belief.

Which of the countries in the first barchart that has a smaller foreign born population that the UK would you like us to examine?

Net migration to the UK - Migration Observatory

An overview of net migration in the UK – defined as the difference between immigration and emigration of people moving for at least a year.

I think you need to do a bit more googling on mass displacement too tbh.

Especially around topics like the potential global impacts on food systems and supply chains or on how the UK population won't be immune to being displaced themselves.

Probably not a great idea to pull up the drawbridge and go full on isolationist when it might be you that needs a new home in future.
